    Esta tesis propone una nueva técnica para segmentar las vías aéreas superiores. Esta propuesta permite la extracción de estructuras curvilíneas usando curvaturas principales. La propuesta permite la extracción de éstas estructuras en imágenes 2D y 3D. Entre las principales novedades se encuentra la propuesta de un nuevo criterio de parada en la propagación del algoritmo de realce de contraste (operador multi-escala de tipo sombrero alto). De la misma forma, el criterio de parada propuesto es usado para detener los algoritmos de difusión anisotrópica. Además, un nuevo criterio es propuesto para seleccionar las curvaturas principales que conforman las estructuras curvilíneas, que se basa en los criterios propuestos por Steger, Deng et. al. y Armande et. al. Además, se propone un nuevo algoritmo para realizar la supresión de nomáximos que permite reducir la presencia de discontinuidades en el borde de las estructuras curvilíneas. Para extraer los bordes de las estructuras curvilíneas, se utiliza un algoritmo de enlace que incluye un nuevo criterio de distancia para reducir la aparición de agujeros en la estructura final. Finalmente, con base en los resultados obtenidos, se utiliza un algoritmo morfológico para cerrar los agujeros y se aplica un algoritmo de crecimiento de regiones para obtener la segmentación final de las vías respiratorias superiores.This dissertation proposes a new approach to segment the upper airways. This proposal allows the extraction of curvilinear structures based on the principal curvatures. The proposal allows extracting these structures from 2D and 3D images. Among the main novelties is the proposal of a new stopping criterion to stop the propagation of the contrast enhancement algorithm (multiscale top-hat morphological operator). In the same way, the proposed stopping criterion is used to stop the anisotropic diffusion algorithms. In addition, a new criterion is proposed to select the principal curvatures that make up the curvilinear structures, which is based on the criteria proposed by Steger, Deng et. al. and Armande et. al. Furthermore, a new algorithm to perform the non-maximum suppression that allows reducing the presence of discontinuities in the border of curvilinear structures is proposed. To extract the edges of the curvilinear structures, a linking algorithm is used that includes a new distance criterion to reduce the appearance of gaps in the final structure. Finally, based on the obtained results, a morphological algorithm is used to close the gaps and a region growing algorithm to obtain the final upper airways segmentation is applied.Doctor en IngenieríaDoctorad

    Green Function and Electromagnetic Potential for Computer Vision and Convolutional Neural Network Applications

    RÉSUMÉ Pour les problèmes de vision machine (CV) avancées, tels que la classification, la segmentation de scènes et la détection d’objets salients, il est nécessaire d’extraire le plus de caractéristiques possibles des images. Un des outils les plus utilisés pour l’extraction de caractéristiques est l’utilisation d’un noyau de convolution, où chacun des noyaux est spécialisé pour l’extraction d’une caractéristique donnée. Ceci a mené au développement récent des réseaux de neurones convolutionnels (CNN) qui permet d’optimiser des milliers de noyaux à la fois, faisant du CNN la norme pour l’analyse d’images. Toutefois, une limitation importante du CNN est que les noyaux sont petits (généralement de taille 3x3 à 7x7), ce qui limite l’interaction longue-distance des caractéristiques. Une autre limitation est que la fusion des caractéristiques se fait par des additions pondérées et des opérations de mise en commun (moyennes et maximums locaux). En effet, ces opérations ne permettent pas de fusionner des caractéristiques du domaine spatial avec des caractéristiques puisque ces caractéristiques occupent des positions éloignées sur l’image. L’objectif de cette thèse est de développer des nouveaux noyaux de convolutions basés sur l’électromagnétisme (EM) et les fonctions de Green (GF) pour être utilisés dans des applications de vision machine (CV) et dans des réseaux de neurones convolutionnels (CNN). Ces nouveaux noyaux sont au moins aussi grands que l’image. Ils évitent donc plusieurs des limitations des CNN standards puisqu’ils permettent l’interaction longue-distance entre les pixels de limages. De plus, ils permettent de fusionner les caractéristiques du domaine spatial avec les caractéristiques du domaine du gradient. Aussi, étant donné tout champ vectoriel, les nouveaux noyaux permettent de trouver le champ vectoriel conservatif le plus rapproché du champ initial, ce qui signifie que le nouveau champ devient lisse, irrotationnel et conservatif (intégrable par intégrale curviligne). Pour répondre à cet objectif, nous avons d’abord développé des noyaux convolutionnels symétriques et asymétriques basés sur les propriétés des EM et des GF et résultant en des noyaux qui sont invariants en résolution et en rotation. Ensuite, nous avons développé la première méthode qui permet de déterminer la probabilité d’inclusion dans des contours partiels, permettant donc d’extrapoler des contours fins en des régions continues couvrant l’espace 2D. De plus, la présente thèse démontre que les noyaux basés sur les GF sont les solveurs optimaux du gradient et du Laplacien.----------ABSTRACT For advanced computer vision (CV) tasks such as classification, scene segmentation, and salient object detection, extracting features from images is mandatory. One of the most used tools for feature extraction is the convolutional kernel, with each kernel being specialized for specific feature detection. In recent years, the convolutional neural network (CNN) became the standard method of feature detection since it allowed to optimize thousands of kernels at the same time. However, a limitation of the CNN is that all the kernels are small (usually between 3x3 and 7x7), which limits the receptive field. Another limitation is that feature merging is done via weighted additions and pooling, which cannot be used to merge spatial-domain features with gradient-domain features since they are not located at the same pixel coordinate. The objective of this thesis is to develop electromagnetic (EM) convolutions and Green’s functions (GF) convolutions to be used in Computer Vision and convolutional neural networks (CNN). These new kernels do not have the limitations of the standard CNN kernels since they allow an unlimited receptive field and interaction between any pixel in the image by using kernels bigger than the image. They allow merging spatial domain features with gradient domain features by integrating any vector field. Additionally, they can transform any vector field of features into its least-error conservative field, meaning that the field of features becomes smooth, irrotational and conservative (line-integrable). At first, we developed different symmetrical and asymmetrical convolutional kernel based on EM and GF that are both resolution and rotation invariant. Then we developed the first method of determining the probability of being inside partial edges, which allow extrapolating thin edge features into the full 2D space. Furthermore, the current thesis proves that GF kernels are the least-error gradient and Laplacian solvers, and they are empirically demonstrated to be faster than the fastest competing method and easier to implement. Consequently, using the fast gradient solver, we developed the first method that directly combines edges with saliency maps in the gradient domain, then solves the gradient to go back to the saliency domain. The improvement of the saliency maps over the F-measure is on average 6.6 times better than the nearest competing algorithm on a selected dataset. Then, to improve the saliency maps further, we developed the DSS-GIS model which combines edges with salient regions deep inside the network

    Preserving Jewellery Created from Plastics and Rubber: Application of Materials and Interpretation of Objects

    The adoption of plastics and rubber to artist jewellers’ repertoire of materials in the late 1960s marks a significant and permanent alteration to the artist jewellery discipline. Since this time the physical and conceptual possibilities of plastics have fuelled and enabled developments in this artistic field. Since the early 1970s museums and private collections have continually acquired artist jewellery created from plastic. Some of these artworks are now exhibiting change or deterioration. Discussion and debate regarding their preservation is a pressing need. To date, whilst there has been recent research into the deterioration of plastic materials found in cultural heritage, almost no published work or debate has addressed artist jewellery specifically. This research positions plastic artist jewellery within the expanding discipline of modern materials conservation and aims to raise awareness of preserving plastic jewellery artworks. The prevalent plastics in use for artist jewellery, their properties and importantly application, to create artistic intent, are identified. Current attitudes of custodians and artists towards preservation, which has a bearing on the past and future prospects of the artworks, are analysed. Despite not having articulated their opinion previously, many jewellery artists have considered the long term prospects of their work as part of their artistic practice. As change and deterioration of the artworks is inevitable the impact of change to jewellery artworks is considered. Understanding how material properties are applied to create intent, as identified, is essential to comprehend meaning and any alterations as a result of change. Finally, having deliberately drawn artists into the preservation debate the nature of their input is considered. Should jewellery artists intervene in their own work when treatment is required? The research is from a humanities rather than scientific perspective and is concerned with objects and their interpretation in the context of preservation. The artworks are the starting point and their context as jewellery objects is the primary concern. Oral testimony of artists is also crucial to draw the artists into the preservation process as stakeholders and because jewellery artists are hitherto unrecorded in this context. What is demonstrated throughout the thesis is that the wearable function of jewellery has a bearing on their perception and interpretation as objects

    Multi Agent Systems for the Active Management of Electrical Distribution Networks

    This Thesis presents an investigation on the technical impacts caused by the steady state operation of Small-Scale Embedded Generators (SSEGs) and also introduces the Small Scale Energy Zone (SSEZ) concept which aims to remove the technical barriers associated with SSEGs through intelligent coordination of large numbers of customerowned SSEGs, energy storage units and controllable loads. This approach represents a move away from the conventional passive, “fit-and-forget” philosophy under which the majority of Low Voltage (LV) distribution networks are currently operated and towards a higher degree of network operational management. The employment of a distributed management and control approach for an SSEZ, realised through the Multi Agent Systems (MAS) technology, is proposed due to the advantages that can potentially be realised in the areas of: (i) scalability and openness, (ii) reliability and resilience and (iii) communications efficiency. A FIPA-compliant MAS-based control approach is designed, developed and evaluated based on the specific SSEZ control requirements. The MAS is composed of three types of agents: direct control agents, indirect control agents and utility agents, exchanging information through the employment of a common ontology. In addition, a relational database management system is also designed and developed in order to be coupled with the developed MAS for data management purposes

    Surface attachment of bacteria is the first step of biofilm formation and biofilms are associated with infections and bacterial resistance. Surface attachment of bacteria is often mediated by extracellular appendages, for example flagellum and pili. The flagellum is a cork-screw like structure used for swimming and surface sensing. Pili are filamentous structures and have a wide variety of functions, among them attachment on surfaces. Because of the small diameter of flagellum and pili, direct observations of flagellum and pili are challenging under physiological conditions. C. crescentus, a model organism for biofilm formation, has an asymmetric life cycle. The sessile and stalked mother cell produces a motile daughter cell that is equipped with a flagellum and pili at the free pole.     Contributions of flywheel systems in wind power plants

    The stepwise replacement of conventional power plants by renewable-based ones such as wind power plants could a ect the system behaviour and planning. First, the network stability may be compromised as it becomes less resilient against sudden changes in the loads or generator trips. This is because wind turbines are not synchronized with network frequency but they are usually connected to the grid through fast controllable electronic power converters. And second, due to the stochastic nature of wind, the electrical power generated by wind power plants is neither constant non controllable. This aff ects the network planning as the expected generation level depends on non reliable wind forecasts. Also it aff ects the power quality as the fast fluctuations of wind power can cause harmonics and flicker emissions. For these reasons, network operators gradually set up more stringent requirements for the grid integration of wind power. These regulations require wind power plants to behave in several aspects as conventional synchronized generating units. Among other requirements, it is set the provision of some ancillary services to the grid as frequency and voltage control, the capability of withstanding short-circuits and faults, and to respect some threshold level with regard to the quality of the power generated. Accordingly, energy storage systems may play an important role in wind power applications by enhancing the controllability of the output of wind power plants and providing ancillary services to the power system and thus, enabling an increased penetration of wind power in the system. This thesis focuses on the potential uses of flywheel energy storage systems in wind power. The thesis introduces the basis of several energy storage systems as well as identi es their applications in wind power based on an extensive literature review. It follows with the presentation of the design and setting up of a scale-lab flywheel-based energy storage system. From this work, research concentrates on the application of flywheel devices for power smoothing of wind power plants. The developed concepts are proved by simulations but also experimentally using the above mentioned scale-lab test bench. In particular, research focuses on the de nition of an optimization criteria for the operation of flywheel devices while smoothing the wind power, and the design and experimental validation of the proposed control algorithms of the storage device. The last chapters of the thesis research on the role of wind power plants in system frequency control support. In this sense, an extensive literature review on the network operator's requirements for the participation of wind power plants in system frequency control related-tasks is off ered. Also, this review covers the proposed control methods in the literature for enabling wind turbines to participate in system frequency control. The results of this work open the door to the design of control systems of wind turbines and wind power plants for primary frequency control. The contribution of flywheel devices is also considered. Results highlight the tremendous potential of energy storage systems in general for facilitating the grid integration of wind power plants. Regarding the uses of flywheel devices, it is worth noting that some of their characteristics as the high-ramp power rates can be exploited for reducing the variability of the power generated by wind turbines, and thus for improving the quality of the power injected to the grid by wind power plants. Also, they can support wind power plants to ful l the requirements for their participation in system frequency control support related tasks.El progressiu despla cament de plantes de generaci o convencionals per part de plantes de generaci o de tipus renovable, com els parcs e olics, pot afectar el comportament i la plani caci o del sistema el ectric. Aquestes regulacions requereixen als parcs e olics que es comportin en molts aspectes com plantes de generaci o convencional. Entre d'altres requeriments, els parcs e olics han de proveir serveis auxiliars per a la operaci o del sistema el ectric com tamb e el suport en el control dels nivells de tensi o i freqü encia de la xarxa; oferir suport durant curtcircuits; i mantenir uns nivells m nims en la qualitat de la pot encia generada. Els sistemes d'emmagatzematge d'energia poden millorar la controlabilitat de la pot encia generada pels parcs e olics i ajudar a aquests a proveir serveis auxiliars al sistema el ectric, afavorint aix la seva integraci o a la xarxa. Aquesta tesi tracta l'aplicaci o en parcs e olics dels sistemes d'emmagatzematge d'energia basats en volants d'in ercia. La tesi introdueix les bases de diversos sistemes d'emmagatzematge i identi ca les seves potencials aplicacions en parcs e olics en base a una extensa revisi o bibliogr a ca. El treball continua amb la posta a punt d'un equipament de laboratori, que con gura un sistema d'emmagatzematge d'energia basat en un volant d'in ercia. Següents cap tols de la tesi estudien l'aplicaci o dels volants d'in ercia per a esmorteir el per l fluctuant de la pot encia generada pels parcs e olics.     Autonomous and reliable operation of multilayer optical networks

    This Ph.D. thesis focuses on the reliable autonomous operation of multilayer optical networks. The first objective focuses on the reliability of the optical network and proposes methods for health analysis related to Quality of Transmission (QoT) degradation. Such degradation is produced by soft-failures in optical devices and fibers in core and metro segments of the operators’ transport networks. Here, we compare estimated and measured QoT in the optical transponder by using a QoT tool based on GNPy. We show that the changes in the values of input parameters of the QoT model representing optical devices can explain the deviations and degradation in performance of such devices. We use reverse engineering to estimate the value of those parameters that explain the observed QoT. We show by simulation a large anticipation in soft-failure detection, localization and identification of degradation before affecting the network. Finally, for validating our approach, we experimentally observe the high accuracy in the estimation of the modeling parameters. The second objective focuses on multilayer optical networks, where lightpaths are used to connect packet nodes thus creating virtual links (vLink). Specifically, we study how lightpaths can be managed to provide enough capacity to the packet layer without detrimental effects in their Quality of Service (QoS), like added delays or packet losses, and at the same time minimize energy consumption. Such management must be as autonomous as possible to minimize human intervention. We study the autonomous operation of optical connections based on digital subcarrier multiplexing (DSCM). We propose several solutions for the autonomous operation of DSCM systems. In particular, the combination of two modules running in the optical node and in the optical transponder activate and deactivate subcarriers to adapt the capacity of the optical connection to the upper layer packet traffic. The module running in the optical node is part of our Intent-based Networking (IBN) solution and implements prediction to anticipate traffic changes. Our comprehensive study demonstrates the feasibility of DSCM autonomous operation and shows large cost savings in terms of energy consumption. In addition, our study provides a guideline to help vendors and operators to adopt the proposed solutions. The final objective targets at automating packet layer connections (PkC). Automating the capacity required by PkCs can bring further cost reduction to network operators, as it can limit the resources used at the optical layer. However, such automation requires careful design to avoid any QoS degradation, which would impact Service Level Agreement (SLA) in the case that the packet flow is related to some customer connection. We study autonomous packet flow capacity management. We apply RL techniques and propose a management lifecycle consisting of three different phases: 1) a self-tuned threshold-based approach for setting up the connection until enough data is collected, which enables understanding the traffic characteristics; 2) RL operation based on models pre-trained with generic traffic profiles; and 3) RL operation based on models trained with the observed traffic. We show that RL algorithms provide poor performance until they learn optimal policies, as well as when the traffic characteristics change over time. The proposed lifecycle provides remarkable performance from the starting of the connection and it shows the robustness while facing changes in traffic. The contribution is twofold: 1) and on the one hand, we propose a solution based on RL, which shows superior performance with respect to the solution based on prediction; and 2) because vLinks support packet connections, coordination between the intents of both layers is proposed. In this case, the actions taken by the individual PkCs are used by the vLink intent. The results show noticeable performance compared to independent vLink operation.Esta tesis doctoral se centra en la operación autónoma y confiable de redes ópticas multicapa. El primer objetivo se centra en la fiabilidad de la red óptica y propone métodos para el análisis del estado relacionados con la degradación de la calidad de la transmisión (QoT). Dicha degradación se produce por fallos en dispositivos ópticos y fibras en las redes de transporte de los operadores que no causan el corte de la señal. Comparamos el QoT estimado y medido en el transpondedor óptico mediante el uso de una herramienta de QoT basada en GNPy. Mostramos que los cambios en los valores de los parámetros de entrada del modelo QoT que representan los dispositivos ópticos pueden explicar las desviaciones y la degradación en el rendimiento de dichos dispositivos. Usamos ingeniería inversa para estimar el valor de aquellos parámetros que explican el QoT observado. Mostramos, mediante simulación, una gran anticipación en la detección, localización e identificación de fallas leves antes de afectar la red. Finalmente, validamos nuestro método de forma experimental y comprobamos la alta precisión en la estimación de los parámetros de los modelos. El segundo objetivo se centra en las redes ópticas multicapa, donde se utilizan conexiones ópticas (lightpaths) para conectar nodos de paquetes creando así enlaces virtuales (vLink). Específicamente, estudiamos cómo se pueden gestionar los lightpaths para proporcionar suficiente capacidad a la capa de paquetes sin efectos perjudiciales en su calidad de servicio (QoS), como retrasos adicionales o pérdidas de paquetes, y al mismo tiempo minimizar el consumo de energía. Estudiamos el funcionamiento autónomo de conexiones ópticas basadas en multiplexación de subportadoras digitales (DSCM) y proponemos soluciones para su funcionamiento autónomo. En particular, la combinación de dos módulos que se ejecutan en el nodo óptico y en el transpondedor óptico activan y desactivan subportadoras para adaptar la capacidad de la conexión óptica al tráfico de paquetes. El módulo que se ejecuta en el nodo óptico implementa la predicción para anticipar los cambios de tráfico. Nuestro estudio demuestra la viabilidad de la operación autónoma de DSCM y muestra un gran ahorro de consumo de energía. El objetivo final es la automatización de conexiones de capa de paquete (PkC). La automatización de la capacidad requerida por las PkC puede generar una mayor reducción de costes, ya que puede limitar los recursos utilizados en la capa óptica. Sin embargo, dicha automatización requiere un diseño cuidadoso para evitar cualquier degradación de QoS, lo que afectaría acuerdos de nivel de servicio (SLA) en el caso de que el flujo de paquetes esté relacionado con alguna conexión del cliente. Estudiamos la gestión autónoma de la capacidad del flujo de paquetes. Aplicamos RL y proponemos un ciclo de vida de gestión con tres fases: 1) un enfoque basado en umbrales auto ajustados para configurar la conexión hasta que se recopilen suficientes datos, lo que permite comprender las características del tráfico; 2) operación RL basada en modelos pre-entrenados con perfiles de tráfico genéricos; y 3) operación de RL en base a modelos entrenados con el tránsito observado. Mostramos que los algoritmos de RL ofrecen un desempeño deficiente hasta que aprenden las políticas óptimas, así cuando las características del tráfico cambian con el tiempo. El ciclo de vida propuesto proporciona un rendimiento notable desde el inicio de la conexión y muestra la robustez frente a cambios en el tráfico. La contribución es doble: 1) proponemos una solución basada en RL que muestra un rendimiento superior que la solución basada en predicción; y 2) debido a que los vLinks admiten conexiones de paquetes, se propone la coordinación entre las intenciones de ambas capas. En este caso, la intención de vLink utiliza las acciones realizadas por los PkC individuales.
