Frontiers in Mental Health and the Environment

This book sheds light on the influence of the environment on people’s mental health. To what extent are exposures to green space, air pollution, natural disasters, etc. related to depression or suicide? Such questions are relevant for both scientists and policy-makers. A rich collection of chapters subsumes current research frontiers originating from disciplines such as geography, public health, epidemiology, environmental science, etc. The topics covered in the book are of interest to researchers, practitioners, and professionals. The editor hopes that the scientific outcome of this book will stimulate debate about how the environment affects mental health outcomes

The ATEN Framework for Creating the Realistic Synthetic Electronic Health Record

Realistic synthetic data are increasingly being recognized as solutions to lack of data or privacy concerns in healthcare and other domains, yet little effort has been expended in establishing a generic framework for characterizing, achieving and validating realism in Synthetic Data Generation (SDG). The objectives of this paper are to: (1) present a characterization of the concept of realism as it applies to synthetic data; and (2) present and demonstrate application of the generic ATEN Framework for achieving and validating realism for SDG. The characterization of realism is developed through insights obtained from analysis of the literature on SDG. The development of the generic methods for achieving and validating realism for synthetic data was achieved by using knowledge discovery in databases (KDD), data mining enhanced with concept analysis and identification of characteristic, and classification rules. Application of this framework is demonstrated by using the synthetic Electronic Healthcare Record (EHR) for the domain of midwifery. The knowledge discovery process improves and expedites the generation process; having a more complex and complete understanding of the knowledge required to create the synthetic data significantly reduce the number of generation iterations. The validation process shows similar efficiencies through using the knowledge discovered as the elements for assessing the generated synthetic data. Successful validation supports claims of success and resolves whether the synthetic data is a sufficient replacement for real data. The ATEN Framework supports the researcher in identifying the knowledge elements that need to be synthesized, as well as supporting claims of sufficient realism through the use of that knowledge in a structured approach to validation. When used for SDG, the ATEN Framework enables a complete analysis of source data for knowledge necessary for correct generation. The ATEN Framework ensures the researcher that the synthetic data being created is realistic enough for the replacement of real data for a given use-case

Objective: To investigate the relationship between climatic factors and daily numbers of completed suicide in the area of Split-Dalmatia County in the years 2011 to 2015. Subjects and methods: Retrospective analysis of all suicides between 1st of January 2011 and 31st of December 2015. Weather variables of interest were sunshine duration, atmospheric pressure, temperature, relative humidity, wind direction (Bura/Jugo) and wind speed. Data was collected on the weather station Split Marjan and compared on a day-to-day basis with daily number of suicides. Timelines for each variable were created and Pearson correlation coefficients were calculated to demonstrate possible associations. Calculations were repeated distinguishing between male and female suicides. To reduce seasonality, data on weather and suicides were differenced. Results: Positive weak correlation was found between sunshine duration and number of daily suicides (r=0.057; P=0.015) and conversely weak negative correlation between cloud coverage and number of daily suicides (r=-0.052; P=0.057). These associations were found in the whole sample as well as only in men. When comparing male to female suicides, these results were not reproducible in the female population. Conclusion: This study confirms the hypothesis that sunshine may facilitate suicide and conversely cloud coverage can be seen as protective factor. Associations with other climatic factors may be present but due to the complexity of the interaction between weather and human behaviour and health, difficult to demonstrate.Cilj: Istražiti povezanost klimatskih čimbenika i broja samoubojstava u Splitsko-dalmatinskoj županiji u razdoblju 2011. - 2015. godine.

In his work entitled The Advancement of Learning (1605), Francis Bacon expresses the need for students and their teachers to push beyond current knowledge by testing accepted theories, developing new paradigms, and discovering new information. The abstracts in this booklet are clear examples of how students and faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences are advancing knowledge in a variety of disciplines. From the analysis of particular proteins to the examination of various literary themes, the students whose scholarly endeavors are represented in this booklet pursued research projects that have explored new ideas; and their teachers have helped them to achieve their goals by providing expert guidance in the field of study, by challenging students to excel, and by encouraging them as they developed their ideas. Students and faculty should be very proud of the work reflected in these abstracts. These individual efforts and collaborations reveal what is best about Winthrop University as a learning community.https://digitalcommons.winthrop.edu/undergradresearch_abstractbooks/1010/thumbnail.jp
