The meeting was organized into three technical sessions: the first focused on mobile satellite propagation; the second examined the propagation effects for frequencies above 10 GHz; and the third addressed studies devoted exclusively to the Olympus/Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS) Program

    Joint Use of On-board Reconfigurable Antenna Pattern and Adaptive Coding and Modulation in Satellite Communications at High Frequency Bands

    The Telecommunication market is driven by the increasing need of the end users for multimedia services which require high data rates. Within the fixed satellite service, frequency bandwidths wide enough to carry such high data rates are to be found in Ka band (26-40 GHz), and Q/V bands (40-50 GHz). However, at Ka band and above, transmitted signals can be severely affected by tropospheric attenuation for substantial percentages of time, resulting in the degradation of the quality and of the availability of communication services. Fade Mitigation Techniques (FMTs) must be used to counteract these severe propagation impairments. In this thesis we explore the joint use of two of the most promising techniques, known as Reconfigurable Antenna and Adaptive Coding and Modulation, which up to now has been separately developed. Some of our accomplishments include, but are not limited to: a methodology to describe rain attenuation conditions for multiple users in large geographical areas, a tractable framework for the generation of correlated time series of rain attenuation for multiple receiving stations, the comparison of performance between fixed antenna systems and Reconfigurable Antenna system coupled with Adaptive Coding and Modulation

    The NASA Propagation Effects Handbook for Satellite Systems Design provides a systematic compilation of the major propagation effects experienced on space-Earth paths in the 10 to 100 GHz frequency band region. It provides both a detailed description of the propagation phenomenon and a summary of the impact of the effect on the communications system design and performance. Chapter 2 through 5 describe the propagation effects, prediction models, and available experimental data bases. In Chapter 6, design techniques and prediction methods available for evaluating propagation effects on space-Earth communication systems are presented. Chapter 7 addresses the system design process and how the effects of propagation on system design and performance should be considered and how that can be mitigated. Examples of operational and planned Ku, Ka, and EHF satellite communications systems are given

    Presentations of the Ninth Advanced Communications Technology Satellite Propagation Studies Workshop (APSW IX)

    The Advanced Communications Technology Satellite Propagation Studies Workshop (APSW) is convened each year to present the results of the ACTS Propagation Campaign. Representatives from the satellite communications (satcom) industry, academia, and government are invited to APSW for discussions and exchange of information. The ACTS Propagation campaign is completing three years of Ka-Band data collection at seven sites in North America. Through this effort, NASA is making a major contribution to growth of satcom services by providing timely propagation data and models for predicting the performance of Ka-Band satellite communications systems

    The NASA Propagation Experimenters (NAPEX) Meeting is convened each year to discuss studies supported by the NASA Propagation Program. Representatives from the satellite communications (satcom) industry, academia, and government who have an interest in space-ground radio wave propagation are invited to NAPEX meetings for discussions and exchange of information. The reports delivered at these meetings by program managers and investigators present recent activities and future plans. This forum provides an opportunity for peer discussion of work in progress, timely dissemination of propagation results, and close interaction with the satcom industry
