    Interfaces de fala silenciosa multimodais para português europeu com base na articulação

    Doutoramento conjunto MAPi em InformáticaThe concept of silent speech, when applied to Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), describes a system which allows for speech communication in the absence of an acoustic signal. By analyzing data gathered during different parts of the human speech production process, Silent Speech Interfaces (SSI) allow users with speech impairments to communicate with a system. SSI can also be used in the presence of environmental noise, and in situations in which privacy, confidentiality, or non-disturbance are important. Nonetheless, despite recent advances, performance and usability of Silent Speech systems still have much room for improvement. A better performance of such systems would enable their application in relevant areas, such as Ambient Assisted Living. Therefore, it is necessary to extend our understanding of the capabilities and limitations of silent speech modalities and to enhance their joint exploration. Thus, in this thesis, we have established several goals: (1) SSI language expansion to support European Portuguese; (2) overcome identified limitations of current SSI techniques to detect EP nasality (3) develop a Multimodal HCI approach for SSI based on non-invasive modalities; and (4) explore more direct measures in the Multimodal SSI for EP acquired from more invasive/obtrusive modalities, to be used as ground truth in articulation processes, enhancing our comprehension of other modalities. In order to achieve these goals and to support our research in this area, we have created a multimodal SSI framework that fosters leveraging modalities and combining information, supporting research in multimodal SSI. The proposed framework goes beyond the data acquisition process itself, including methods for online and offline synchronization, multimodal data processing, feature extraction, feature selection, analysis, classification and prototyping. Examples of applicability are provided for each stage of the framework. These include articulatory studies for HCI, the development of a multimodal SSI based on less invasive modalities and the use of ground truth information coming from more invasive/obtrusive modalities to overcome the limitations of other modalities. In the work here presented, we also apply existing methods in the area of SSI to EP for the first time, noting that nasal sounds may cause an inferior performance in some modalities. In this context, we propose a non-invasive solution for the detection of nasality based on a single Surface Electromyography sensor, conceivable of being included in a multimodal SSI.O conceito de fala silenciosa, quando aplicado a interação humano-computador, permite a comunicação na ausência de um sinal acústico. Através da análise de dados, recolhidos no processo de produção de fala humana, uma interface de fala silenciosa (referida como SSI, do inglês Silent Speech Interface) permite a utilizadores com deficiências ao nível da fala comunicar com um sistema. As SSI podem também ser usadas na presença de ruído ambiente, e em situações em que privacidade, confidencialidade, ou não perturbar, é importante. Contudo, apesar da evolução verificada recentemente, o desempenho e usabilidade de sistemas de fala silenciosa tem ainda uma grande margem de progressão. O aumento de desempenho destes sistemas possibilitaria assim a sua aplicação a áreas como Ambientes Assistidos. É desta forma fundamental alargar o nosso conhecimento sobre as capacidades e limitações das modalidades utilizadas para fala silenciosa e fomentar a sua exploração conjunta. Assim, foram estabelecidos vários objetivos para esta tese: (1) Expansão das linguagens suportadas por SSI com o Português Europeu; (2) Superar as limitações de técnicas de SSI atuais na deteção de nasalidade; (3) Desenvolver uma abordagem SSI multimodal para interação humano-computador, com base em modalidades não invasivas; (4) Explorar o uso de medidas diretas e complementares, adquiridas através de modalidades mais invasivas/intrusivas em configurações multimodais, que fornecem informação exata da articulação e permitem aumentar a nosso entendimento de outras modalidades. Para atingir os objetivos supramencionados e suportar a investigação nesta área procedeu-se à criação de uma plataforma SSI multimodal que potencia os meios para a exploração conjunta de modalidades. A plataforma proposta vai muito para além da simples aquisição de dados, incluindo também métodos para sincronização de modalidades, processamento de dados multimodais, extração e seleção de características, análise, classificação e prototipagem. Exemplos de aplicação para cada fase da plataforma incluem: estudos articulatórios para interação humano-computador, desenvolvimento de uma SSI multimodal com base em modalidades não invasivas, e o uso de informação exata com origem em modalidades invasivas/intrusivas para superar limitações de outras modalidades. No trabalho apresentado aplica-se ainda, pela primeira vez, métodos retirados do estado da arte ao Português Europeu, verificando-se que sons nasais podem causar um desempenho inferior de um sistema de fala silenciosa.     Fused mechanomyography and inertial measurement for human-robot interface

    Human-Machine Interfaces (HMI) are the technology through which we interact with the ever-increasing quantity of smart devices surrounding us. The fundamental goal of an HMI is to facilitate robot control through uniting a human operator as the supervisor with a machine as the task executor. Sensors, actuators, and onboard intelligence have not reached the point where robotic manipulators may function with complete autonomy and therefore some form of HMI is still necessary in unstructured environments. These may include environments where direct human action is undesirable or infeasible, and situations where a robot must assist and/or interface with people. Contemporary literature has introduced concepts such as body-worn mechanical devices, instrumented gloves, inertial or electromagnetic motion tracking sensors on the arms, head, or legs, electroencephalographic (EEG) brain activity sensors, electromyographic (EMG) muscular activity sensors and camera-based (vision) interfaces to recognize hand gestures and/or track arm motions for assessment of operator intent and generation of robotic control signals. While these developments offer a wealth of future potential their utility has been largely restricted to laboratory demonstrations in controlled environments due to issues such as lack of portability and robustness and an inability to extract operator intent for both arm and hand motion. Wearable physiological sensors hold particular promise for capture of human intent/command. EMG-based gesture recognition systems in particular have received significant attention in recent literature. As wearable pervasive devices, they offer benefits over camera or physical input systems in that they neither inhibit the user physically nor constrain the user to a location where the sensors are deployed. Despite these benefits, EMG alone has yet to demonstrate the capacity to recognize both gross movement (e.g. arm motion) and finer grasping (e.g. hand movement). As such, many researchers have proposed fusing muscle activity (EMG) and motion tracking e.g. (inertial measurement) to combine arm motion and grasp intent as HMI input for manipulator control. However, such work has arguably reached a plateau since EMG suffers from interference from environmental factors which cause signal degradation over time, demands an electrical connection with the skin, and has not demonstrated the capacity to function out of controlled environments for long periods of time. This thesis proposes a new form of gesture-based interface utilising a novel combination of inertial measurement units (IMUs) and mechanomyography sensors (MMGs). The modular system permits numerous configurations of IMU to derive body kinematics in real-time and uses this to convert arm movements into control signals. Additionally, bands containing six mechanomyography sensors were used to observe muscular contractions in the forearm which are generated using specific hand motions. This combination of continuous and discrete control signals allows a large variety of smart devices to be controlled. Several methods of pattern recognition were implemented to provide accurate decoding of the mechanomyographic information, including Linear Discriminant Analysis and Support Vector Machines. Based on these techniques, accuracies of 94.5% and 94.6% respectively were achieved for 12 gesture classification. In real-time tests, accuracies of 95.6% were achieved in 5 gesture classification. It has previously been noted that MMG sensors are susceptible to motion induced interference. The thesis also established that arm pose also changes the measured signal. This thesis introduces a new method of fusing of IMU and MMG to provide a classification that is robust to both of these sources of interference. Additionally, an improvement in orientation estimation, and a new orientation estimation algorithm are proposed. These improvements to the robustness of the system provide the first solution that is able to reliably track both motion and muscle activity for extended periods of time for HMI outside a clinical environment. Application in robot teleoperation in both real-world and virtual environments were explored. With multiple degrees of freedom, robot teleoperation provides an ideal test platform for HMI devices, since it requires a combination of continuous and discrete control signals. The field of prosthetics also represents a unique challenge for HMI applications. In an ideal situation, the sensor suite should be capable of detecting the muscular activity in the residual limb which is naturally indicative of intent to perform a specific hand pose and trigger this post in the prosthetic device. Dynamic environmental conditions within a socket such as skin impedance have delayed the translation of gesture control systems into prosthetic devices, however mechanomyography sensors are unaffected by such issues. There is huge potential for a system like this to be utilised as a controller as ubiquitous computing systems become more prevalent, and as the desire for a simple, universal interface increases.     Towards a Multimodal Silent Speech Interface for European Portuguese

    Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) in the presence of environmental noise is still a hard problem to tackle in speech science (Ng et al., 2000). Another problem well described in the literature is the one concerned with elderly speech production. Studies (Helfrich, 1979) have shown evidence of a slower speech rate, more breaks, more speech errors and a humbled volume of speech, when comparing elderly with teenagers or adults speech, on an acoustic level. This fact makes elderly speech hard to recognize, using currently available stochastic based ASR technology.     TicTacToes: Assessing Toe Movements as an Input Modality

    From carrying grocery bags to holding onto handles on the bus, there are a variety of situations where one or both hands are busy, hindering the vision of ubiquitous interaction with technology. Voice commands, as a popular hands-free alternative, struggle with ambient noise and privacy issues. As an alternative approach, research explored movements of various body parts (e.g., head, arms) as input modalities, with foot-based techniques proving particularly suitable for hands-free interaction. Whereas previous research only considered the movement of the foot as a whole, in this work, we argue that our toes offer further degrees of freedom that can be leveraged for interaction. To explore the viability of toe-based interaction, we contribute the results of a controlled experiment with 18 participants assessing the impact of five factors on the accuracy, efficiency and user experience of such interfaces.     Acoustic and videoendoscopic techniques to improve voice assessment via relative fundamental frequency

    Quantitative measures of laryngeal muscle tension are needed to improve assessment and track clinical progress. Although relative fundamental frequency (RFF) shows promise as an acoustic estimate of laryngeal muscle tension, it is not yet transferable to the clinic. The purpose of this work was to refine algorithmic estimation of RFF, as well as to enhance the knowledge surrounding the physiological underpinnings of RFF. The first study used a large database of voice samples collected from 227 speakers with voice disorders and 256 typical speakers to evaluate the effects of fundamental frequency estimation techniques and voice sample characteristics on algorithmic RFF estimation. By refining fundamental frequency estimation using the Auditory Sawtooth Waveform Inspired Pitch Estimator—Prime (Auditory-SWIPE′) algorithm and accounting for sample characteristics via the acoustic measure, pitch strength, algorithmic errors related to the accuracy and precision of RFF were reduced by 88.4% and 17.3%, respectively. The second study sought to characterize the physiological factors influencing acoustic outputs of RFF estimation. A group of 53 speakers with voice disorders and 69 typical speakers each produced the utterance, /ifi/, while simultaneous recordings were collected using a microphone and flexible nasendoscope. Acoustic features calculated via the microphone signal were examined in reference to the physiological initiation and termination of vocal fold vibration. The features that corresponded with these transitions were then implemented into the RFF algorithm, leading to significant improvements in the precision of the RFF algorithm to reflect the underlying physiological mechanisms for voicing offsets (p < .001, V = .60) and onsets (p < .001, V = .54) when compared to manual RFF estimation. The third study further elucidated the physiological underpinnings of RFF by examining the contribution of vocal fold abduction to RFF during intervocalic voicing offsets. Vocal fold abductory patterns were compared to RFF values in a subset of speakers from the second study, comprising young adults, older adults, and older adults with Parkinson’s disease. Abductory patterns were not significantly different among the three groups; however, vocal fold abduction was observed to play a significant role in measures of RFF at voicing offset. By improving algorithmic estimation and elucidating aspects of the underlying physiology affecting RFF, this work adds to the utility of RFF for use in conjunction with current clinical techniques to assess laryngeal muscle tension.2021-09-29T00:00:00

    Earables: Wearable Computing on the Ears

    Kopfhörer haben sich bei Verbrauchern durchgesetzt, da sie private Audiokanäle anbieten, zum Beispiel zum Hören von Musik, zum Anschauen der neuesten Filme während dem Pendeln oder zum freihändigen Telefonieren. Dank diesem eindeutigen primären Einsatzzweck haben sich Kopfhörer im Vergleich zu anderen Wearables, wie zum Beispiel Smartglasses, bereits stärker durchgesetzt. In den letzten Jahren hat sich eine neue Klasse von Wearables herausgebildet, die als "Earables" bezeichnet werden. Diese Geräte sind so konzipiert, dass sie in oder um die Ohren getragen werden können. Sie enthalten verschiedene Sensoren, um die Funktionalität von Kopfhörern zu erweitern. Die räumliche Nähe von Earables zu wichtigen anatomischen Strukturen des menschlichen Körpers bietet eine ausgezeichnete Plattform für die Erfassung einer Vielzahl von Eigenschaften, Prozessen und Aktivitäten. Auch wenn im Bereich der Earables-Forschung bereits einige Fortschritte erzielt wurden, wird deren Potenzial aktuell nicht vollständig abgeschöpft. Ziel dieser Dissertation ist es daher, neue Einblicke in die Möglichkeiten von Earables zu geben, indem fortschrittliche Sensorikansätze erforscht werden, welche die Erkennung von bisher unzugänglichen Phänomenen ermöglichen. Durch die Einführung von neuartiger Hardware und Algorithmik zielt diese Dissertation darauf ab, die Grenzen des Erreichbaren im Bereich Earables zu verschieben und diese letztlich als vielseitige Sensorplattform zur Erweiterung menschlicher Fähigkeiten zu etablieren. Um eine fundierte Grundlage für die Dissertation zu schaffen, synthetisiert die vorliegende Arbeit den Stand der Technik im Bereich der ohr-basierten Sensorik und stellt eine einzigartig umfassende Taxonomie auf der Basis von 271 relevanten Publikationen vor. Durch die Verbindung von Low-Level-Sensor-Prinzipien mit Higher-Level-Phänomenen werden in der Dissertation anschließ-end Arbeiten aus verschiedenen Bereichen zusammengefasst, darunter (i) physiologische Überwachung und Gesundheit, (ii) Bewegung und Aktivität, (iii) Interaktion und (iv) Authentifizierung und Identifizierung. Diese Dissertation baut auf der bestehenden Forschung im Bereich der physiologischen Überwachung und Gesundheit mit Hilfe von Earables auf und stellt fortschrittliche Algorithmen, statistische Auswertungen und empirische Studien vor, um die Machbarkeit der Messung der Atemfrequenz und der Erkennung von Episoden erhöhter Hustenfrequenz durch den Einsatz von In-Ear-Beschleunigungsmessern und Gyroskopen zu demonstrieren. Diese neuartigen Sensorfunktionen unterstreichen das Potenzial von Earables, einen gesünderen Lebensstil zu fördern und eine proaktive Gesundheitsversorgung zu ermöglichen. Darüber hinaus wird in dieser Dissertation ein innovativer Eye-Tracking-Ansatz namens "earEOG" vorgestellt, welcher Aktivitätserkennung erleichtern soll. Durch die systematische Auswertung von Elektrodenpotentialen, die um die Ohren herum mittels eines modifizierten Kopfhörers gemessen werden, eröffnet diese Dissertation einen neuen Weg zur Messung der Blickrichtung. Dabei ist das Verfahren weniger aufdringlich und komfortabler als bisherige Ansätze. Darüber hinaus wird ein Regressionsmodell eingeführt, um absolute Änderungen des Blickwinkels auf der Grundlage von earEOG vorherzusagen. Diese Entwicklung eröffnet neue Möglichkeiten für Forschung, welche sich nahtlos in das tägliche Leben integrieren lässt und tiefere Einblicke in das menschliche Verhalten ermöglicht. Weiterhin zeigt diese Arbeit, wie sich die einzigarte Bauform von Earables mit Sensorik kombinieren lässt, um neuartige Phänomene zu erkennen. Um die Interaktionsmöglichkeiten von Earables zu verbessern, wird in dieser Dissertation eine diskrete Eingabetechnik namens "EarRumble" vorgestellt, die auf der freiwilligen Kontrolle des Tensor Tympani Muskels im Mittelohr beruht. Die Dissertation bietet Einblicke in die Verbreitung, die Benutzerfreundlichkeit und den Komfort von EarRumble, zusammen mit praktischen Anwendungen in zwei realen Szenarien. Der EarRumble-Ansatz erweitert das Ohr von einem rein rezeptiven Organ zu einem Organ, das nicht nur Signale empfangen, sondern auch Ausgangssignale erzeugen kann. Im Wesentlichen wird das Ohr als zusätzliches interaktives Medium eingesetzt, welches eine freihändige und augenfreie Kommunikation zwischen Mensch und Maschine ermöglicht. EarRumble stellt eine Interaktionstechnik vor, die von den Nutzern als "magisch und fast telepathisch" beschrieben wird, und zeigt ein erhebliches ungenutztes Potenzial im Bereich der Earables auf. Aufbauend auf den vorhergehenden Ergebnissen der verschiedenen Anwendungsbereiche und Forschungserkenntnisse mündet die Dissertation in einer offenen Hard- und Software-Plattform für Earables namens "OpenEarable". OpenEarable umfasst eine Reihe fortschrittlicher Sensorfunktionen, die für verschiedene ohrbasierte Forschungsanwendungen geeignet sind, und ist gleichzeitig einfach herzustellen. Hierdurch werden die Einstiegshürden in die ohrbasierte Sensorforschung gesenkt und OpenEarable trägt somit dazu bei, das gesamte Potenzial von Earables auszuschöpfen. Darüber hinaus trägt die Dissertation grundlegenden Designrichtlinien und Referenzarchitekturen für Earables bei. Durch diese Forschung schließt die Dissertation die Lücke zwischen der Grundlagenforschung zu ohrbasierten Sensoren und deren praktischem Einsatz in realen Szenarien. Zusammenfassend liefert die Dissertation neue Nutzungsszenarien, Algorithmen, Hardware-Prototypen, statistische Auswertungen, empirische Studien und Designrichtlinien, um das Feld des Earable Computing voranzutreiben.     Characterization and Improvement of the Clinical Assessment of Vocal Hyperfunction

D. Morrison, Rammage, Belisle, Pullan, & Nichol, 1983; N. Roy, Ford, & Bless, 1996). There is no widely accepted diagnostic measure of the presence and degree of vocal hyperfunction, and currently, assessment during diagnosis is often primarily based on subjective impressions given the patient's history and presentation of symptoms such as auditory-perceptual and visual or tactile discrimination of muscle tension (e.g., laryngeal palpation). Clinical care is hindered by the lack of a "gold standard" objective measure for the assessment of vocal hyperfunction. The first study in this thesis evaluated a novel experimental design for the study of vocal hyperfunction, making use of the established clinical procedure of injection laryngoplasty. This work found that the use of injection laryngoplasty as a platform for the study of some types of vocal hyperfunction is limited, but may offer a convenient opportunity to study selected associated parameters. Particular promising objective measures were investigated in the remaining four studies: kinematics of the vocal folds, root-mean-squared (RMS) measures of surface electromyography (sEMG), and spectral characteristics of sEMG. Kinematic features of vocal fold abduction and adduction were shown to discriminate between individuals with muscle tension dysphonia and controls.(cont.) RMS measures of sEMG were investigated through correlation with current clinical neck palpation techniques in voice therapy patients and via a cross-sectional study of individuals with vocal fold nodules. Correlations between RMS neck sEMG and palpation ratings were low, and although some individuals with nodules displayed RMS neck sEMG patterns that were inconsistent with those seen in controls, overall the RMS measures were unable to discriminate between disordered and control groups. Mean coherence between two neck sEMG locations in individuals with vocal nodules was significantly lower in the 15 - 35 Hz band relative to controls, possibly agreeing with past subjective accounts of "imbalanced" muscle activity.by Cara Elizabeth Stepp.Ph.D

    The selection and evaluation of a sensory technology for interaction in a warehouse environment

    In recent years, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) has become a significant part of modern life as it has improved human performance in the completion of daily tasks in using computerised systems. The increase in the variety of bio-sensing and wearable technologies on the market has propelled designers towards designing more efficient, effective and fully natural User-Interfaces (UI), such as the Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) and the Muscle-Computer Interface (MCI). BCI and MCI have been used for various purposes, such as controlling wheelchairs, piloting drones, providing alphanumeric inputs into a system and improving sports performance. Various challenges are experienced by workers in a warehouse environment. Because they often have to carry objects (referred to as hands-full) it is difficult to interact with traditional devices. Noise undeniably exists in some industrial environments and it is known as a major factor that causes communication problems. This has reduced the popularity of using verbal interfaces with computer applications, such as Warehouse Management Systems. Another factor that effects the performance of workers are action slips caused by a lack of concentration during, for example, routine picking activities. This can have a negative impact on job performance and allow a worker to incorrectly execute a task in a warehouse environment. This research project investigated the current challenges workers experience in a warehouse environment and the technologies utilised in this environment. The latest automation and identification systems and technologies are identified and discussed, specifically the technologies which have addressed known problems. Sensory technologies were identified that enable interaction between a human and a computerised warehouse environment. Biological and natural behaviours of humans which are applicable in the interaction with a computerised environment were described and discussed. The interactive behaviours included the visionary, auditory, speech production and physiological movement where other natural human behaviours such paying attention, action slips and the action of counting items were investigated. A number of modern sensory technologies, devices and techniques for HCI were identified with the aim of selecting and evaluating an appropriate sensory technology for MCI. iii MCI technologies enable a computer system to recognise hand and other gestures of a user, creating means of direct interaction between a user and a computer as they are able to detect specific features extracted from a specific biological or physiological activity. Thereafter, Machine Learning (ML) is applied in order to train a computer system to detect these features and convert them to a computer interface. An application of biomedical signals (bio-signals) in HCI using a MYO Armband for MCI is presented. An MCI prototype (MCIp) was developed and implemented to allow a user to provide input to an HCI, in a hands-free and hands-full situation. The MCIp was designed and developed to recognise the hand-finger gestures of a person when both hands are free or when holding an object, such a cardboard box. The MCIp applies an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to classify features extracted from the surface Electromyography signals acquired by the MYO Armband around the forearm muscle. The MCIp provided the results of data classification for gesture recognition to an accuracy level of 34.87% with a hands-free situation. This was done by employing the ANN. The MCIp, furthermore, enabled users to provide numeric inputs to the MCIp system hands-full with an accuracy of 59.7% after a training session for each gesture of only 10 seconds. The results were obtained using eight participants. Similar experimentation with the MYO Armband has not been found to be reported in any literature at submission of this document. Based on this novel experimentation, the main contribution of this research study is a suggestion that the application of a MYO Armband, as a commercially available muscle-sensing device on the market, has the potential as an MCI to recognise the finger gestures hands-free and hands-full. An accurate MCI can increase the efficiency and effectiveness of an HCI tool when it is applied to different applications in a warehouse where noise and hands-full activities pose a challenge. Besides acknowledged approaches for kinematic, dynamic, and electromyographic (EMG) analysis carried out in the laboratory, more recently developed devices, such as wearables, inertial measurement units, ambient sensors, and cameras or depth sensors, have been adopted on a wide scale. Furthermore, computational intelligence (CI) methods, such as artificial neural networks, have recently emerged as promising tools for the development and application of intelligent systems in motion analysis. Thus, the synergy of classic instrumentation and novel smart devices and techniques has created unique capabilities in the continuous monitoring of motor behaviors in different fields, such as clinics, sports, and ergonomics. However, real-time sensing, signal processing, human activity recognition, and characterization and interpretation of motion metrics and behaviors from sensor data still representing a challenging problem not only in laboratories but also at home and in the community.
