    Assessing Relevance of Tweets for Risk Communication

    Although Twitter is used for emergency management activities, the relevance of tweets during a hazard event is still open to debate. In this study, six different computational (i.e. Natural Language Processing) and spatiotemporal analytical approaches were implemented to assess the relevance of risk information extracted from tweets obtained during the 2013 Colorado flood event. Primarily, tweets containing information about the flooding events and its impacts were analysed. Examination of the relationships between tweet volume and its content with precipitation amount, damage extent, and official reports revealed that relevant tweets provided information about the event and its impacts rather than any other risk information that public expects to receive via alert messages. However, only 14% of the geo-tagged tweets and only 0.06% of the total fire hose tweets were found to be relevant to the event. By providing insight into the quality of social media data and its usefulness to emergency management activities, this study contributes to the literature on quality of big data. Future research in this area would focus on assessing the reliability of relevant tweets for disaster related situational awareness

    Timescales of Massive Human Entrainment

    The past two decades have seen an upsurge of interest in the collective behaviors of complex systems composed of many agents entrained to each other and to external events. In this paper, we extend concepts of entrainment to the dynamics of human collective attention. We conducted a detailed investigation of the unfolding of human entrainment - as expressed by the content and patterns of hundreds of thousands of messages on Twitter - during the 2012 US presidential debates. By time locking these data sources, we quantify the impact of the unfolding debate on human attention. We show that collective social behavior covaries second-by-second to the interactional dynamics of the debates: A candidate speaking induces rapid increases in mentions of his name on social media and decreases in mentions of the other candidate. Moreover, interruptions by an interlocutor increase the attention received. We also highlight a distinct time scale for the impact of salient moments in the debate: Mentions in social media start within 5-10 seconds after the moment; peak at approximately one minute; and slowly decay in a consistent fashion across well-known events during the debates. Finally, we show that public attention after an initial burst slowly decays through the course of the debates. Thus we demonstrate that large-scale human entrainment may hold across a number of distinct scales, in an exquisitely time-locked fashion.     Social Sensing of Floods in the UK

    "Social sensing" is a form of crowd-sourcing that involves systematic analysis of digital communications to detect real-world events. Here we consider the use of social sensing for observing natural hazards. In particular, we present a case study that uses data from a popular social media platform (Twitter) to detect and locate flood events in the UK. In order to improve data quality we apply a number of filters (timezone, simple text filters and a naive Bayes `relevance' filter) to the data. We then use place names in the user profile and message text to infer the location of the tweets. These two steps remove most of the irrelevant tweets and yield orders of magnitude more located tweets than we have by relying on geo-tagged data. We demonstrate that high resolution social sensing of floods is feasible and we can produce high-quality historical and real-time maps of floods using Twitter.Comment: 24 pages, 6 figure

    When Politicians Talk: Assessing Online Conversational Practices of Political Parties on Twitter

    Assessing political conversations in social media requires a deeper understanding of the underlying practices and styles that drive these conversations. In this paper, we present a computational approach for assessing online conversational practices of political parties. Following a deductive approach, we devise a number of quantitative measures from a discussion of theoretical constructs in sociological theory. The resulting measures make different - mostly qualitative - aspects of online conversational practices amenable to computation. We evaluate our computational approach by applying it in a case study. In particular, we study online conversational practices of German politicians on Twitter during the German federal election 2013. We find that political parties share some interesting patterns of behavior, but also exhibit some unique and interesting idiosyncrasies.     Attitudes expressed in online comments about environmental factors in the tourism sector: an exploratory study

    The object of this exploratory study is to identify the positive, neutral and negative environment factors that affect users who visit Spanish hotels in order to help the hotel managers decide how to improve the quality of the services provided. To carry out the research a Sentiment Analysis was initially performed, grouping the sample of tweets (n = 14459) according to the feelings shown and then a textual analysis was used to identify the key environment factors in these feelings using the qualitative analysis software Nvivo (QSR International, Melbourne, Australia). The results of the exploratory study present the key environment factors that affect the users experience when visiting hotels in Spain, such as actions that support local traditions and products, the maintenance of rural areas respecting the local environment and nature, or respecting air quality in the areas where hotels have facilities and offer services. The conclusions of the research can help hotels improve their services and the impact on the environment, as well as improving the visitors experience based on the positive, neutral and negative environment factors which the visitors themselves identified

    State of the art 2015: a literature review of social media intelligence capabilities for counter-terrorism

    Overview This paper is a review of how information and insight can be drawn from open social media sources. It focuses on the specific research techniques that have emerged, the capabilities they provide, the possible insights they offer, and the ethical and legal questions they raise. These techniques are considered relevant and valuable in so far as they can help to maintain public safety by preventing terrorism, preparing for it, protecting the public from it and pursuing its perpetrators. The report also considers how far this can be achieved against the backdrop of radically changing technology and public attitudes towards surveillance. This is an updated version of a 2013 report paper on the same subject, State of the Art. Since 2013, there have been significant changes in social media, how it is used by terrorist groups, and the methods being developed to make sense of it.  The paper is structured as follows: Part 1 is an overview of social media use, focused on how it is used by groups of interest to those involved in counter-terrorism. This includes new sections on trends of social media platforms; and a new section on Islamic State (IS). Part 2 provides an introduction to the key approaches of social media intelligence (henceforth ‘SOCMINT’) for counter-terrorism. Part 3 sets out a series of SOCMINT techniques. For each technique a series of capabilities and insights are considered, the validity and reliability of the method is considered, and how they might be applied to counter-terrorism work explored. Part 4 outlines a number of important legal, ethical and practical considerations when undertaking SOCMINT work

    Does \u2018bigger\u2019mean \u2018better\u2019? Pitfalls and shortcuts associated with big data for social research

    \u2018Big data is here to stay.\u2019 This key statement has a double value: is an assumption as well as the reason why a theoretical reflection is needed. Furthermore, Big data is something that is gaining visibility and success in social sciences even, overcoming the division between humanities and computer sciences. In this contribution some considerations on the presence and the certain persistence of Big data as a socio-technical assemblage will be outlined. Therefore, the intriguing opportunities for social research linked to such interaction between practices and technological development will be developed. However, despite a promissory rhetoric, fostered by several scholars since the birth of Big data as a labelled concept, some risks are just around the corner. The claims for the methodological power of bigger and bigger datasets, as well as increasing speed in analysis and data collection, are creating a real hype in social research. Peculiar attention is needed in order to avoid some pitfalls. These risks will be analysed for what concerns the validity of the research results \u2018obtained through Big data. After a pars distruens, this contribution will conclude with a pars construens; assuming the previous critiques, a mixed methods research design approach will be described as a general proposal with the objective of stimulating a debate on the integration of Big data in complex research projecting

    Assessing the social impacts of extreme weather events using social media

    The frequency and severity of extreme weather events such as flooding, hurricanes/storms and heatwaves are increasing as a result of climate change. There is a need for information to better understand when, where and how these events are impacting people. However, there are currently limited sources of impact information beyond traditional meteorological observations. Social sensing, which is the use of unsolicited social media data to better understand real world events, is one method that may provide such information. Social sensing has successfully been used to detect earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, wildfires, heatwaves and other weather hazards. Here social sensing methods are adapted to explore potential for collecting impact information for meteorologists and decision makers concerned with extreme weather events. After a review of the literature, three experimental studies are presented. Social sensing is shown to be effective for detection of impacts of named storms in the UK and Ireland. Topics of discussion and sentiment are explored in the period before, during and after a storm event. Social sensing is also shown able to detect high-impact rainfall events worldwide, validating results against a manually curated database. Additional events which were not known to this database were found by social sensing. Finally, social sensing was applied to heatwaves in three European cities. Building on previous work on heatwaves in the UK, USA and Australia, the methods were extended to include impact phrases alongside hazard-related phrases, in three different languages (English, Dutch and Greek). Overall, social sensing is found to be a good source of impact information for organisations that need to better understand the impacts of extreme weather.     HETEROGENEOUS DATA AND PROBABILISTIC SYSTEM MODEL ANALYSES FOR ENHANCED SITUATIONAL AWARENESS AND RESILIENCE OF CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE SYSTEMS

    The protection and resilience of critical infrastructure systems (CIS) are essential for public safety in daily operations and times of crisis and for community preparedness to hazard events. Increasing situational awareness and resilience of CIS includes both comprehensive monitoring of CIS and their surroundings, as well as evaluating CIS behaviors in changing conditions and with different system configurations. Two frameworks for increasing the monitoring capabilities of CIS are presented. The proposed frameworks are (1) a process for classifying social media big data for monitoring CIS and hazard events and (2) a framework for integrating heterogeneous data sources, including social media, using Bayesian inference to update prior probabilities of event occurrence. Applications of both frameworks are presented, including building and evaluating text-based machine learning classifiers for identifying CIS damages and integrating disparate data sources to estimate hazards and CIS damages. Probabilistic analyses of CIS vulnerabilities with varying system parameters and topologies are also presented. In a water network, the impact of varying parameters on component performance is evaluated. In multiple, small-size water networks, the impacts of system topology are assessed to identify characteristics of more resilient networks. This body of work contributes insights and methods for monitoring CIS and assessing their performance. Integrating heterogeneous data sources increases situational awareness of CIS, especially during or after failure events, and evaluating the sensitivity of CIS outcomes to changes in the network facilitates decisions for CIS investments and emergency response.Ph.D
