    MemShield: GPU-assisted software memory encryption

Cryptographic algorithm implementations are vulnerable to Cold Boot attacks, which consist in exploiting the persistence of RAM cells across reboots or power down cycles to read the memory contents and recover precious sensitive data. The principal defensive weapon against Cold Boot attacks is memory encryption. In this work we propose MemShield, a memory encryption framework for user space applications that exploits a GPU to safely store the master key and perform the encryption/decryption operations. We developed a prototype that is completely transparent to existing applications and does not require changes to the OS kernel. We discuss the design, the related works, the implementation, the security analysis, and the performances of MemShield.Comment: 14 pages, 2 figures. Voice over IP (VoIP) is more susceptible to Denial of Service attacks than traditional data traffic, due to the former's low tolerance to delay and jitter. We describe the design of our VoIP Vulnerability Assessment Tool (VVAT) with which we demonstrate vulnerabilities to DoS attacks inherent in many of the popular VoIP applications available today. In our threat model we assume an adversary who is not a network administrator, nor has direct control of the channel and key VoIP elements. His aim is to degrade his victim's QoS without giving away his presence by making his attack look like a normal network degradation. Even black-boxed, applications like Skype that use proprietary protocols show poor performance under specially crafted DoS attacks to its media stream. Finally we show how securing Skype relays not only preserves many of its useful features such as seamless traversal of firewalls but also protects its users from DoS attacks such as recording of conversations and disruption of voice quality. We also present our experiences using virtualization to protect VoIP applications from 'insider attacks'. Our contribution is two fold we: 1) Outline a threat model for VoIP, incorporating our attack models in an open-source network simulator/emulator allowing VoIP vendors to check their software for vulnerabilities in a controlled environment before releasing it. 2) We present two promising approaches for protecting the confidentiality, availability and authentication of VoIP Services

Relying on the cloud for storing data and performing computations has become a popular solution in today\u2019s society, which demands large data collections and/or analysis over them to be readily available, for example, to make knowledge-based decisions. While bringing undeniable benefits to both data owners and end users accessing the outsourced data, moving to the cloud raises a number of issues, ranging from choosing the most suitable cloud provider for outsourcing to effectively protecting data and computation results. In this paper, we discuss the main issues related to data protection arising when data and/or computations over them are moved to the cloud. We also illustrate possible solutions and approaches for addressing such issues

Selective and private access to outsourced data centers

The advancements in the Information Technology and the rapid diffusion of novel computing paradigms have accelerated the trend of moving data to the cloud. Public and private organizations are more often outsourcing their data centers to the cloud for economic and/or performance reasons, thus making data confidentiality an essential requirement. A basic technique for protecting data confidentiality relies on encryption: data are encrypted by the owner before their outsourcing. Encryption however complicates both the query evaluation and enforcement of access restrictions to outsourced data. In this chapter, we provide an overview of the issues and techniques related to the support of selective and private access to outsourced data in a scenario where the cloud provider is trusted for managing the data but not for reading their content. We therefore illustrate methods for enforcing access control and for efficiently and privately executing queries (at the server side) over encrypted data. We also show how the combined adoption of approaches supporting access control and for efficient query evaluation may cause novel privacy issues that need to be carefully handled

The purpose of this thesis is to develop a reference design to assist in the selection of security practices in power electronics design. A prototype will be developed from this reference design for evaluation. This evaluation will include a brief cost/benefit analysis to gauge the efficacy of implementing each layer of security throughout the power electronics design process. This thesis will also describe the obstacles and effectiveness of integrating a Trusted Platform Module (TPM) into a cyber-hardened grid-connected device. The TPM device is a secured crypto processor that assists in generating, storing, and restricting the use of cryptographic keys. The emphasis of this research is to establish integrity, authenticity, and confidentiality within a system by providing a baseline of security concerns for segments of the system. This research considers communication, control, and hardware level securities. The scope of this thesis will review the necessary security methods as well as consider the effects these methods have on the embedded system, to assess the desired security to responsiveness trade off. Applying this approach to a design process will alleviate various unknowns of appending security to a power electronics design. This thesis describes the specific vulnerabilities introduced within this grid-edge environment, and how the liabilities within the system can be mitigated. Initially, common security techniques will be considered to establish a guideline to benchmark performance and resource costs of the system. The foundation will be a non-hardened power electronic system platform with industry standard communication protocols. Several security techniques and attack vectors will then be evaluated to contribute to the base level platform. Other fail-safe features take place to gauge progress of the selected approach, non-inclusive to the TPM. Collectively, this investigation will determine a valid experiment by appraising and categorizing resource allocation, performance overhead, and monetary cost analysis results into a reference design. The prototype will then demonstrate methods to relieve common threats that are purposefully implemented into the design

    Security strategies in genomic files

There are new mechanisms to sequence and process the genomic code, discovering thus diagnostic tools and treatments. The file for a sequenced genome can reach hundreds of gigabytes. Thus, for further studies, we need new means to compress the information and a standardized representation to simplify the development of new tools. The ISO standardization group MPEG has used its expertise in compressing multimedia content to compress genomic information and develop its ´MPEG-G standard’. Given the sensitivity of the data, security is a major identified requirement. This thesis proposes novel technologies that assure the security of both the sequenced data and its metadata. We define a container-based file format to group data, metadata, and security information at the syntactical level. It includes new features like grouping multiple results in a same file to simplify the transport of whole studies. We use the granularity of the encoder’s output to enhance security. The information is represented in units, each dedicated to a specific region of the genome, which allows to provide encryption and signature features on a region base. We analyze the trade-off between security and an even more fine-grained approach and prove that apparently secure settings can be insecure: if the file creator may encrypt only specific elements of a unit, cross-checking unencrypted information permits to infer encrypted content. Most of the proposals for MPEG-G coming from other research groups and companies focused on data compression and representation. However, the need was recognized to find a solution for metadata encoding. Our proposal was included in the standard: an XML-based solution, separated in a core specification and extensions. It permits to adapt the metadata schema to the different genomic repositories' frameworks, without importing requirements from one framework to another. To simplify the handling of the resulting metadata, we define profiles, i.e. lists of extensions that must be present in a given framework. We use XML signature and XML encryption for metadata security. The MPEG requirements also concern access rules. Our privacy solutions limit the range of persons with access and we propose access rules represented with XACML to convey under which circumstances a user is granted access to a specific action among the ones specified in MPEG-G's API, e.g. filtering data by attributes. We also specify algorithms to combine multiple rules by defining default behaviors and exceptions. The standard’s security mechanisms protect the information only during transport and access. Once the data is obtained, the user could publish it. In order to identify leakers, we propose an algorithm that generates unique, virtually undetectable variations. Our solution is novel as the marking can be undone (and the utility of the data preserved) if the corresponding secret key is revealed. We also show how to combine multiple secret keys to avoid collusion. The API retained for MPEG-G considers search criteria not present in the indexing tables, which highlights shortcomings. Based on the proposed MPEG-G API we have developed a solution. It is based on a collaboration framework where the different users' needs and the patient's privacy settings result in a purpose-built file format that optimizes query times and provides privacy and authenticity on the patient-defined genomic regions. The encrypted output units are created and indexed to optimize query times and avoid rarely used indexing fields. Our approach resolves the shortcomings of MPEG-G's indexing strategy. We have submitted our technologies to the MPEG standardization committee. Many have been included in the final standard, via merging with other proposals (e.g. file format), discussion (e.g. security mechanisms), or direct acceptance (e.g. privacy rules).Hi han nous mètodes per la seqüenciació i el processament del codi genòmic, permetent descobrir eines de diagnòstic i tractaments en l’àmbit mèdic.

Both the development and the integration of efficient network, open source technology, and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) applications have been increasingly important and gained quick popularity due to new rapidly emerging IP-based network technology. Nonetheless, security and privacy concerns have emerged as issues that need to be addressed. The privacy process ensures that encryption and decryption methods protect the data from being alternate and intercept, a privacy VoIP call will contribute to private and confidential conversation purposes such as telebanking, telepsychiatry, health, safety issues and many more. Hence, this study had quantified VoIP performance and voice quality under security implementation with the technique of IPSec and the enhancement of the Blowfish encryption algorithm. In fact, the primary objective of this study is to improve the performance of Blowfish encryption algorithm. The proposed algorithm was tested with varying network topologies and a variety of audio codecs, which contributed to the impact upon VoIP network. A network testbed with seven experiments and network configurations had been set up in two labs to determine its effects on network performance. Besides, an experimental work using OPNET simulations under 54 experiments of network scenarios were compared with the network testbed for validation and verification purposes. Next, an enhanced Blowfish algorithm for VoIP services had been designed and executed throughout this research. From the stance of VoIP session and services performance, the redesign of the Blowfish algorithm displayed several significant effects that improved both the performance of VoIP network and the quality of voice. This finding indicates some available opportunities that could enhance encrypted algorithm, data privacy, and integrity; where the balance between Quality of Services (QoS) and security techniques can be applied to boost network throughput, performance, and voice quality of existing VoIP services. With that, this study had executed and contributed to a threefold aspect, which refers to the redesign of the Blowfish algorithm that could minimize computational resources. In addition, the VoIP network performance was analysed and compared in terms of end-to-end delay, jitter, packet loss, and finally, sought improvement for voice quality in VoIP services, as well as the effect of the designed enhanced Blowfish algorithm upon voice quality, which had been quantified by using a variety of voice codecs
