    Using XDAQ in Application Scenarios of the CMS Experiment

    XDAQ is a generic data acquisition software environment that emerged from a rich set of of use-cases encountered in the CMS experiment. They cover not the deployment for multiple sub-detectors and the operation of different processing and networking equipment as well as a distributed collaboration of users with different needs. The use of the software in various application scenarios demonstrated the viability of the approach. We discuss two applications, the tracker local DAQ system for front-end commissioning and the muon chamber validation system.     The design and operation of the power subsystem for the Atmospheric Explorer spacecraft are discussed. The additional functional redundancy which was added in several component areas to improve the overall subsystem reliability is analyzed. The battery charging technique has been modified to include third electrode overcharge control. The automatic removal of all battery charge is provided to correct abnormally high battery voltages. An undervoltage detector has been added which removes all nonessential spacecraft loads when the battery voltage falls below a given level. All automatic functions can be over-ridden by ground command

    Human-centered Electric Prosthetic (HELP) Hand

    Through a partnership with Indian non-profit Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti, we designed a functional, robust, and and low cost electrically powered prosthetic hand that communicates with unilateral, transradial, urban Indian amputees through a biointerface. The device uses compliant tendon actuation, a small linear servo, and a wearable garment outfitted with flex sensors to produce a device that, once placed inside a prosthetic glove, is anthropomorphic in both look and feel. The prosthesis was developed such that future groups can design for manufacturing and distribution in India

    HERA-B Framework for Online Calibration and Alignment

    This paper describes the architecture and implementation of the HERA-B framework for online calibration and alignment. At HERA-B the performance of all trigger levels, including the online reconstruction, strongly depends on using the appropriate calibration and alignment constants, which might change during data taking.     Design and application of a multi-modal process tomography system

    This paper presents a design and application study of an integrated multi-modal system designed to support a range of common modalities: electrical resistance, electrical capacitance and ultrasonic tomography. Such a system is designed for use with complex processes that exhibit behaviour changes over time and space, and thus demand equally diverse sensing modalities. A multi-modal process tomography system able to exploit multiple sensor modes must permit the integration of their data, probably centred upon a composite process model. The paper presents an overview of this approach followed by an overview of the systems engineering and integrated design constraints. These include a range of hardware oriented challenges: the complexity and specificity of the front end electronics for each modality; the need for front end data pre-processing and packing; the need to integrate the data to facilitate data fusion; and finally the features to enable successful fusion and interpretation. A range of software aspects are also reviewed: the need to support differing front-end sensors for each modality in a generic fashion; the need to communicate with front end data pre-processing and packing systems; the need to integrate the data to allow data fusion; and finally to enable successful interpretation. The review of the system concepts is illustrated with an application to the study of a complex multi-component process

    Creating a Distributed Programming System Using the DSS: A Case Study of OzDSS

    This technical report describes the integration of the Distribution Subsystem (DSS) to the programming system Mozart. The result, OzDSS, is described in detail. Essential when coupling a programming system to the DSS is how the internal model of threads and language entities are mapped to the abstract entities of the DSS. The model of threads and language entities of Mozart is described at a detailed level to explain the design choices made when developing the code that couples the DSS to Mozart. To show the challenges associated with different thread implementations, the C++DSS system is introduced. C++DSS is a C++ library which uses the DSS to implement different types of distributed language entities in the form of C++ classes. Mozart emulates threads, thus there is no risk of multiple threads accessing the DSS simultaneously. C++DSS, on the other hand, makes use of POSIX threads, thus simultaneous access to the DSS from multiple POSIX threads can happen. The fundamental differences in how threads are treated in a system that emulates threads (Mozart) to a system that make use of native-threads~(C++DSS) is discussed. The paper is concluded by a performance comparison between the OzDSS system and other distributed programming systems. We see that the OzDSS system outperforms ``industry grade'' Java-RMI and Java-CORBA implementations
