'The Head Carver ’: Art Extraordinary and the small spaces of the asylum
This paper uses the unique collection of Scottish outsider art, labelled Art Extraordinary, as a window into the often neglected small spaces of asylum care in the early twentieth century. By drawing upon materials from the Art Extraordinary collection and its associated archives, this paper demonstrates the importance of incorporating small and everyday spaces of care – such as gardens, paths, studios and boats – into the broader historical narratives of psychiatric care in Scotland. Examples of experiential memorialization and counterpoints to asylum surveillance culture will be illuminated. The significance of using ‘outsider’ art collections as a valuable source in tracing geographical histories will be highlighted
Soft set theory based decision support system for mining electronic government dataset
Electronic government (e-gov) is applied to support performance and create more efficient and
effective public services. Grouping data in soft-set theory can be considered as a decision-making
technique for determining the maturity level of e-government use. So far, the uncertainty of the data
obtained through the questionnaire has not been maximally used as an appropriate reference for the
government in determining the direction of future e-gov development policy. This study presents
the maximum attribute relative (MAR) based on soft set theory to classify attribute options. The
results show that facilitation conditions (FC) are the highest variable in influencing people to use
e-government, followed by performance expectancy (PE) and system quality (SQ). The results provide
useful information for decision makers to make policies about their citizens and potentially provide
recommendations on how to design and develop e-government systems in improving public services
In Darwin’s Garden: an evolutionary exploration of augmented reality in practice
This book is part of the Springer Advanced Information and Knowledge Processing Series and will be published under Springer's Open Access policy. This chapter discusses the rapid developments in augmented reality and mixed reality technologies, from a practitioner’s perspective of making the augmented reality sculptural work In Darwin’s Garden. From its conception in 2012, to its exhibition at Carbon Meets Silicon II in 2017, the advances in augmented reality technology led to an interplay between the goal of the creators and the technological realisation of that vision. The art, design and technology involved, generated a reactive process that was mired in external influences as the accessibility to augmented reality became commercially valuable and subsequently restricted. This chapter will be of interest to anyone who wants to understand more about the possibilities, technologies and processes involved in realising mixed reality practice and about the commercial culture that supports it
Effloresce
Effloresce is a series of oil paintings and charcoal drawings containing the human figure and natural imagery and forms. This pairing represents the intersection of the inner realm of human emotion and spiritual experience with the external realm of nature and the world.
Both contemporary and historical painting and drawing traditions serve as inspiration for this body of work, particularly the natural symbology found in Medieval and Renaissance Art. I employ painting techniques inspired by contemporary painters Alex Kanevsky, Mia Bergeron, Helene Delmaire, and Zoey Frank, as well as historical painters John Singer Sargent, Joaquin Sorolla, Rembrandt Van Rijn, Lucian Freud, and Vincent Van Gogh. Each of these artists utilize the tactile nature of the painting medium as part of their personal style and artistic vision, allowing the painted surface and mark making techniques to contribute to the depiction of light, form, and emotion

Art and science in depicting nature: building a botanical iconography through drawing and photography
The research we will carry out is focused on the interconnection between Visual
Arts, Nature and Science. It focuses on observation drawing and the photographic
image, with emphases on photomicrography, to study the technical image and the
artistic image in the graphic depiction of botany.
With case studies focused mainly on the Victorian period in the United Kingdom
and extended to the Portuguese context, the proposed research seeks to explore the
specificities, parallels and complementarities of these variants of the botanical image.
With an integrative analysis as a starting point, we assess the potential of these images
for the construction of a more complete and meaningful botanical iconography for the
areas of Art and Science. It focuses, therefore, in the space of pictorial representation
where both disciplines meet.
With this work, we aim to contribute for the promotion of scientific production
in the areas of interception between Art and Science, associated with a growing artistic
and scientific appreciation of Nature and its elements
