Research in Metabolomics via Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy: Data Mining, Biochemistry and Clinical Chemistry

    Get PDF
Metabolomics entails the comprehensive characterization of the ensemble of endogenous and exogenous metabolites present in a biological specimen. Metabolites represent, at the same time, the downstream output of the genome and the upstream input from various external factors, such as the environment, lifestyle, and diet. Therefore, in the last few years, metabolomic phenotyping has provided unique insights into the fundamental and molecular causes of several physiological and pathophysiological conditions. In parallel, metabolomics has been demonstrating an emerging role in monitoring the influence of different manufacturing procedures on food quality and food safety. In light of the above, this collection includes the latest research from various fields of NMR-based metabolomics applications ranging from biomedicine to data mining and food chemistry

This Special Issue presents the latest advances in agriculture, aquaculture, food technology and environmental protection and engineering, discussing, among others, the following issues: new technologies in water, stormwater and wastewater treatment; water saving, lake restoration; new sludge and waste management systems; biodiesel production from animal fat waste; the microbiological quality of compound fish feeds for aquaculture; the role of technological processes to improve food quality and safety; new trends in the analysis of food and food components including in vitro, in vivo, and in silico analyses; and functional and structural aspects of bioactivities of food molecules

Modern meat: the next generation of meat from cells

    Get PDF
Modern Meat is the first textbook on cultivated meat, with contributions from over 100 experts within the cultivated meat community. The Sections of Modern Meat comprise 5 broad categories of cultivated meat: Context, Impact, Science, Society, and World. The 19 chapters of Modern Meat, spread across these 5 sections, provide detailed entries on cultivated meat. They extensively tour a range of topics including the impact of cultivated meat on humans and animals, the bioprocess of cultivated meat production, how cultivated meat may become a food option in Space and on Mars, and how cultivated meat may impact the economy, culture, and tradition of Asia

Proceedings of the 6th International Symposium on the Mediterranean Pig. October 11 – 13, 2007. Messina - Capo d’Orlando (ME), Italy

    Get PDF
These proceedings publish 79 communications that were distributed in six sessions and in one conference at the 6th Symposium on the Mediterranean Pig, both as main lectures, oral and poster presentation. The major arguments treated are the improvement and the management of the genetic resources, the sanitary approaches in the outdoor systems, the feeding and the rearing techniques, the quality of meat and meat products, the traceability for typical products and their socio-economical dynamics. Particular attention is given to the pig's local breeds and to their meat products, highlighting the importance to preserve the biodiversity as well as the typicality of some unique pork products. The monitoring of pig parasitic diseases is examined as well as the non conventional rearing systems used for typical pig breeds and their effects on the pork quality. It is highlighted also the importance of the products traceability and the need to better understand the purchasing dynamics of typical pork products

Synthesis of new pyrazolium based tunable aryl alkyl ionic liquids and their use in removal of methylene blue from aqueous solution

In this study, two new pyrazolium based tunable aryl alkyl ionic liquids, 2-ethyl-1-(4-methylphenyl)-3,5- dimethylpyrazolium tetrafluoroborate (3a) and 1-(4-methylphenyl)-2-pentyl-3,5-dimethylpyrazolium tetrafluoroborate (3b), were synthesized via three-step reaction and characterized. The removal of methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solution has been investigated using the synthesized salts as an extractant and methylene chloride as a solvent. The obtained results show that MB was extracted from aqueous solution with high extraction efficiency up to 87 % at room temperature at the natural pH of MB solution. The influence of the alkyl chain length on the properties of the salts and their extraction efficiency of MB was investigated
