    Prediction of sedimentation and bank erosion due to the construction of Kahang Dam

    River impoundments continue to cause changes to the hydrological regimes of its host river. Thus, assessment and development of tools for better understanding of the sediment dynamics and riverbank erosion downstream the dam will be of great benefit to researchers and policymakers. The present research employs the use of field techniques and estimation models to improve the (i) prediction of suspended sediment concentration, (ii) monitoring riverbank erosion, and (iii) development of Riverbank Erosion Index (RbEI) for downstream Kahang Dam. This research used the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and ANN with Autoregressive (AR) (NNETAR) in predicting suspended sediment concentration using sediment concentration, discharge and water level as inputs. Similarly, erosion pins were installed on four transects to monitor the riverbank for thirteen months. The results obtained for sediment concentration prediction clearly show that the R2 for NNETAR (0.885) have better value compared to ANN (0.695) even though the relationship between discharge and sediment concentration was weak, it outperforms the ANN. While based on the sediment rating curve (SRC) results, the same pattern was exhibited where the R2 for NNETAR show a greater value than ANN and SRC with R2 values of 0.695 and 0.451, respectively. Based on the observed results of quantified riverbank erosion, the most active transect eroded 1.747 mm/yr- while 0.657 mm/yr- is the least eroded. furthermore, the result reveals the maximum and minimum sediment contribution to the fluvial system from riverbank eroded to be 0.00743 tonnes/yr and 0.00148 tonnes/yr respectively. Lastly, by using discharge and percentage soil composition (sand and clay), a RbEI was developed by the adopted Equation 4.7 to estimate the status of riverbank erosion of River Kahang. Moreover, five classifications of erosion status were proposed, which can be used to describe the status and severity of the riverbank erosion. In conclusion, the estimates by the RbEI is expected to serve as basis for analysing and adopting river stabilisation and restoration design, which will be of importance to dam operators in making informed decisions regarding early warnings on the riverbank stability. Also, reliable sediment concentration estimation will assist in the development of catchment sediment budget which will give an insight into the effect of situating a dam on a river in terms of sediment supply and riverbank erosio

    Automated visual inspection for the quality control of pad printing

    Pad printing is used to decorate consumer goods largely because of its unique ability to apply graphics to doubly curved surfaces. The Intelpadrint project was conceived to develop a better understanding of the process and new printing pads, inks and printers. The thesis deals primarily with the research of a printer control system including machine vision. At present printing is manually controlled. Operator knowledge was gathered for use by an expert system to control the process. A novel local corner- matching algorithm was conceived to effect image segmentation, and neuro-fuzzy techniques were used to recognise patterns in printing errors. Non-linear Finite Element Analysis of the rubber printing-pad led to a method for pre-distorting artwork so that it would print undistorted on a curved product. A flexible, more automated printer was developed that achieves a higher printing rate. Ultraviolet-cured inks with improved printability were developed. The image normalisation/ error-signalling stage in inspection was proven in isolation, as was the pattern recognition system

    Solving constraints within a graph based dependency model by digitising a new process of incrementally casting concrete structures

    The mechanisation of incrementally casting concrete structures can reduce the economic and environmental cost of the formwork which produces them. Low-tech versions of these forms have been designed to produce structures with cross-sectional continuity, but the design and implementation of complex adaptable formworks remains untenable for smaller projects. Addressing these feasibility issues by digitally modelling these systems is problematic because constraint solvers are the obvious method of modelling the adaptable formwork, but cannot acknowledge the hierarchical relationships created by assembling multiple instances of the system. This thesis hypothesises that these opposing relationships may not be completely disparate and that simple dependency relationships can be used to solve constraints if the real procedure of constructing the system is replicated digitally. The behaviour of the digital model was correlated with the behaviour of physical prototypes of the system which were refined based on digital explorations of its possibilities. The generated output is assessed physically on the basis of its efficiency and ease of assembly and digitally on the basis that permutations can be simply described and potentially built in reality. One of the columns generated by the thesis will be cast by the redesigned system in Lyon at the first F2F (file to factory) continuum workshop

    Automatic tolerance inspection through Reverse Engineering: a segmentation technique for plastic injection moulded parts

    This work studies segmentations procedures to recognise features in a Reverse Engineering (RE) application that is oriented to computer-aided tolerance inspection of injection moulding die set-up, necessary to manufacture electromechanical components. It will discuss all steps of the procedures, from the initial acquisition to the final measure data management, but specific original developments will be focused on the RE post-processing method, that should solve the problem related to the automation of the surface recognition and then of the inspection process. As it will be explained in the first two Chapters, automation of the inspection process pertains, eminently, to feature recognition after the segmentation process. This work presents a voxel-based approach with the aim of reducing the computation efforts related to tessellation and curvature analysis, with or without filtering. In fact, a voxel structure approximates the shape through parallelepipeds that include small sub-set of points. In this sense, it represents a filter, since the number of voxels is less than the total number of points, but also a local approximation of the surface, if proper fitting models are applied. Through sensitivity analysis and industrial applications, limits and perspectives of the proposed algorithms are discussed and validated in terms of accuracy and save of time. Validation case-studies are taken from real applications made in ABB Sace S.p.A., that promoted this research. Plastic injection moulding of electromechanical components has a time-consuming die set-up. It is due to the necessity of providing dies with many cavities, which during the cooling phase may present different stamping conditions, thus defects that include lengths outside their dimensional tolerance, and geometrical errors. To increase the industrial efficiency, the automation of the inspection is not only due to the automatic recognition of features but also to a computer-aided inspection protocol (path planning and inspection data management). For this reason, also these steps will be faced, as the natural framework of the thesis research activity. The work structure concerns with six chapters. In Chapter 1, an introduction to the whole procedure is presented, focusing on reasons and utilities of the application of RE techniques in industrial engineering. Chapter 2 analyses acquisition issues and methods that are related to our application, describing: (a) selected hardware; (b) adopted strategy related to the cloud of point acquisition. In Chapter 3, the proposed RE post-processing is described together with a state of art about data segmentation and surface reconstruction. Chapter 4 discusses the proposed algorithms through sensitivity studies concerning thresholds and parameters utilised in segmentation phase and surface reconstruction. Chapter 5 explains briefly the inspection workflow, PDM requirements and solution, together with a preliminary assessing of measures and their reliability. These three chapters (3, 4 and 5) report final sections, called “Discussion”, in which specific considerations are given. Finally, Chapter 6 gives examples of the proposed segmentation technique in the framework of the industrial applications, through specific case studies

    Mechatronics applied to scale model decoration

    The European toy industry is very heavily dependent on manual labour and therefore vulnerable to Far Eastern competitors, who have the advantage of lower labour costs. Automation is Europe's best hope of beating off this oriental challenge. The aim of the project described within this thesis is to investigate the replacement of a traditionally manual series of operations by flexible automation to provide the basis for higher productivity and a greater degree of responsiveness to product change, leading to Just In Time Manufacture with reduced Work In Progress, while still retaining the high quality traditionally associated with the product. This thesis presents one of the first working attempts to this end, represented by a proof-of­concept cell designed and commissioned for investigating the many problems and possibilities associated with the decoration of scale models of cars and trains. The cell was designed using the Mechatronics approach which means that the various mechanical, electrical and electronic and computing possibilities have been taken into account from the start of the design stage. The proof-of-concept cell consists of five stations which provide the necessary means of loading the models in the cell, identifying the models and their orientation, decorating the models, inspecting the decorated models and finally palletising them for assembly. The industrial partners for the project were Hornby Hobbies Limited, J-L Automation and Staubli Unimation. Because this project centres around the present decoration operations at Hornby Hobbies Limited, which is heavily dependant on pad printing, an overview of pad printing is included. This will give the reader a background to the problems faced during the project. Before describing the proof-of-concept cell and its hardware and software components, the present factory based method and the constraints put on the project by Hornby Hobbies Limited are explained so that the reasons for choices within the cell will be more readily understood. A brief history of Scalextric is also included so that the reader may also understand some of the historical problems associated with the product. The result of this mechatronic approach are two fold: a) the efficiency of the cell is improved because the individual parts are working at optimal efficiency b) the cell has a greater degree of flexibility because of the re-programming facilities embedded in each of its component parts. This Mechatronic investigation has led to new concepts for pad printing and assembly operations and these are described in detail in the conclusions

    A comparison of processing techniques for producing prototype injection moulding inserts.

    This project involves the investigation of processing techniques for producing low-cost moulding inserts used in the particulate injection moulding (PIM) process. Prototype moulds were made from both additive and subtractive processes as well as a combination of the two. The general motivation for this was to reduce the entry cost of users when considering PIM. PIM cavity inserts were first made by conventional machining from a polymer block using the pocket NC desktop mill. PIM cavity inserts were also made by fused filament deposition modelling using the Tiertime UP plus 3D printer. The injection moulding trials manifested in surface finish and part removal defects. The feedstock was a titanium metal blend which is brittle in comparison to commodity polymers. That in combination with the mesoscale features, small cross-sections and complex geometries were considered the main problems. For both processing methods, fixes were identified and made to test the theory. These consisted of a blended approach that saw a combination of both the additive and subtractive processes being used. The parts produced from the three processing methods are investigated and their respective merits and issues are discussed
