The Speech-Language Interface in the Spoken Language Translator
The Spoken Language Translator is a prototype for practically useful systems
capable of translating continuous spoken language within restricted domains.
The prototype system translates air travel (ATIS) queries from spoken English
to spoken Swedish and to French. It is constructed, with as few modifications
as possible, from existing pieces of speech and language processing software.
The speech recognizer and language understander are connected by a fairly
conventional pipelined N-best interface. This paper focuses on the ways in
which the language processor makes intelligent use of the sentence hypotheses
delivered by the recognizer. These ways include (1) producing modified
hypotheses to reflect the possible presence of repairs in the uttered word
sequence; (2) fast parsing with a version of the grammar automatically
specialized to the more frequent constructions in the training corpus; and (3)
allowing syntactic and semantic factors to interact with acoustic ones in the
choice of a meaning structure for translation, so that the acoustically
preferred hypothesis is not always selected even if it is within linguistic

Three Approaches to Generating Texts in Different Styles
Natural Language Generation (nlg) systems generate texts in English and other human languages from non-linguistic input data. Usually there are a large number of possible texts that can communicate the input data, and nlg systems must choose one of these. We argue that style can be used by nlg systems to choose between possible texts, and explore how this can be done by (1) explicit stylistic parameters, (2) imitating a genre style, and (3) imitating an individual’s style
Towards declarative diagnosis of constraint programs over finite domains
The paper proposes a theoretical approach of the debugging of constraint
programs based on a notion of explanation tree. The proposed approach is an
attempt to adapt algorithmic debugging to constraint programming. In this
theoretical framework for domain reduction, explanations are proof trees
explaining value removals. These proof trees are defined by inductive
definitions which express the removals of values as consequences of other value
removals. Explanations may be considered as the essence of constraint
programming. They are a declarative view of the computation trace. The

Acquiring and Using Limited User Models in NLG
It is a truism of NLG that good knowledge of the reader can improve the quality of generated texts, and many NLG systems have been developed that exploit detailed user models when generating texts. Unfortunately, it is very difficult in practice to obtain detailed information about users. In this paper we describe our experiences in acquiring and using limited user models for NLG in four different systems, each of which took a different approach to this issue. One general conclusion is that it is useful if imperfect user models are understandable to users or domain experts, and indeed perhaps can be directly edited by them; this agrees with recent thinking about user models in other applications such as intelligent tutoring systems (Kay, 2001)
First Steps Towards an Ethics of Robots and Artificial Intelligence
This article offers an overview of the main first-order ethical questions raised by robots and Artificial Intelligence (RAIs) under five broad rubrics: functionality, inherent significance, rights and responsibilities, side-effects, and threats. The first letter of each rubric taken together conveniently generates the acronym FIRST. Special attention is given to the rubrics of functionality and inherent significance given the centrality of the former and the tendency to neglect the latter in virtue of its somewhat nebulous and contested character. In addition to exploring some illustrative issues arising under each rubric, the article also emphasizes a number of more general themes. These include: the multiplicity of interacting levels on which ethical questions about RAIs arise, the need to recognise that RAIs potentially implicate the full gamut of human values (rather than exclusively or primarily some readily identifiable sub-set of ethical or legal principles), and the need for practically salient ethical reflection on RAIs to be informed by a realistic appreciation of their existing and foreseeable capacities
Automatically detecting open academic review praise and criticism

The accepted version of the publication may differ from the final published version, accessible at https://doi.org/10.1108/OIR-11-2019-0347.Purpose: Peer reviewer evaluations of academic papers are known to be variable in content and overall judgements but are important academic publishing safeguards. This article introduces a sentiment analysis program, PeerJudge, to detect praise and criticism in peer evaluations. It is designed to support editorial management decisions and reviewers in the scholarly publishing process and for grant funding decision workflows. The initial version of PeerJudge is tailored for reviews from F1000Research’s open peer review publishing platform.
Design/methodology/approach: PeerJudge uses a lexical sentiment analysis approach with a human-coded initial sentiment lexicon and machine learning adjustments and additions. It was built with an F1000Research development corpus and evaluated on a different F1000Research test corpus using reviewer ratings.
Findings: PeerJudge can predict F1000Research judgements from negative evaluations in reviewers’ comments more accurately than baseline approaches, although not from positive reviewer comments, which seem to be largely unrelated to reviewer decisions. Within the F1000Research mode of post-publication peer review, the absence of any detected negative comments is a reliable indicator that an article will be ‘approved’, but the presence of moderately negative comments could lead to either an approved or approved with reservations decision.
Originality/value: PeerJudge is the first transparent AI approach to peer review sentiment detection. It may be used to identify anomalous reviews with text potentially not matching judgements for individual checks or systematic bias assessments

Detecting and correcting errors in ruled-based expert systems : an integration of empirical and explanation-based learning
In this paper, we argue that techniques proposed for combining empirical and explanation-based learning methods can also be used to detect errors in rule-based expert systems, to isolate the blame for these errors to a small number of rules and suggest revisions to the rules to eliminate these errors. We demonstrate that FOCL, an extension to Quinlan's FOIL program, can learn in spite of an incorrect domain theory (e.g., a knowledge base of an expert system that contains some erroneous rules). A prototype knowledge acquisition tool, KR-FOCL, has been constructed that can utilize a trace of FOCL to suggest revisions to a rule base
