This book includes a series of scientific papers published in the Special Issue on Artificial Intelligence and Ambient Intelligence at the journal Electronics MDPI. The book starts with an opinion paper on “Relations between Electronics, Artificial Intelligence and Information Society through Information Society Rules”, presenting relations between information society, electronics and artificial intelligence mainly through twenty-four IS laws. After that, the book continues with a series of technical papers that present applications of Artificial Intelligence and Ambient Intelligence in a variety of fields including affective computing, privacy and security in smart environments, and robotics. More specifically, the first part presents usage of Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods in combination with wearable devices (e.g., smartphones and wristbands) for recognizing human psychological states (e.g., emotions and cognitive load). The second part presents usage of AI methods in combination with laser sensors or Wi-Fi signals for improving security in smart buildings by identifying and counting the number of visitors. The last part presents usage of AI methods in robotics for improving robots’ ability for object gripping manipulation and perception. The language of the book is rather technical, thus the intended audience are scientists and researchers who have at least some basic knowledge in computer science

Ambient intelligence (AmI) is intrinsically and thoroughly connected with artificial intelligence (AI). Some even say that it is, in essence, AI in the environment. AI, on the other hand, owes its success to the phenomenal development of the information and communication technologies (ICTs), based on principles such as Moore’s law. In this paper we give an overview of the progress in AI and AmI interconnected with ICT through information-society laws, superintelligence, and several related disciplines, such as multi-agent systems and the Semantic Web, ambient assisted living and e-healthcare, AmI for assisting medical diagnosis, ambient intelligence for e-learning and ambient intelligence for smart cities. Besides a short history and a description of the current state, the frontiers and the future of AmI and AI are also considered in the paper

    End-user Programming of Ambient Narratives

Ambient Intelligence is a vision on the future of consumer electronics, telecommunications and computing in which devices move into the background while at the same time placing the user experience in the foreground. Producing Ambient Intelligent environments on a large scale is problematic however. First, it is technologically not possible in the foreseeable future to mass produce a product or service that generates Ambient Intelligence, given the current state-of-the-art in machine learning and artificial intelligence. Second, it is economically not feasible to manually design and produce Ambient Intelligence applications for each person individually. One of the main research questions in creating such environments is the design of a system capable of supporting mass customization of ambient experiences by means of end-user programming. A brief outline of the approach taken to address this question is described including future research

"Natural and artificial computation in engineering and medical applications : 5th International Work-Conference on the Interplay Between Natural and Artificial Computation, IWINAC 2013, Mallorca, Spain, June 10-14, 2013. Proceedings, Part II", ISBN 978-364238621-3This paper combines techniques of ambient intelligence and wireless sensor networks with the objective of obtain important conclusions to increase the quality of life of people. In particular, we oriented our study to the stress at the workplace, because stress is a leading cause of illness and disease. This article presents a wireless sensor network obtaining information of the environment, a pulse sensor obtaining hear rate values and a complete data analysis applying techniques of ambient intelligence to predict stress from these environment variables and people attributes. Results show promise on the identification of stressful situations as well as stress inference through the use of predictive algorithms(undefined

Developing dynamic conflict resolution models based on the interpretation of personal conflict styles

Proceedings of the 15th Portuguese conference on Artificial Intelligence - (EPIA 2011), Lisboa, Portugal, 2011.Conflict resolution is a classic field of Social Science research. However, with conflicts now also emerging in virtual environments, a new field of research has been developing in which Artificial Intelligence and particularly Ambient Intelligence are interesting. As result, the field of Online Dispute Resolution emerged as the use (in part or entirely) of technological tools to solve disputes. In this paper we focus on developing conflict resolution models that are able to adapt strategies in real time according to changes in the personal conflict styles of the parties. To do it we follow a novel approach in which an intelligent environment supports the lifecycle of the conflict resolution model with the provision of important context knowledge. The presented framework is able to react to important changes in the context of interaction, resulting in a conflict resolution approach that is able to perceive the parties and consequently achieve better outcomes. The work described in this paper is included in TIARAC - Telematics and Artificial Intelligence in Alternative Conflict Resolution Project (PTDC/JUR/71354/2006), which is a research project supported by FCT (Science & Technology Foundation), Portugal
