This thesis presents a methodology of data preparation with probabilistic record linkage and information fusion for improving and enriching information visualizations of biomedical citation data. The problem of record linkage of citation databases where only non-unique identifiers such as author names and document titles are available as common identifiers to be linked was investigated. This problem in citation data parallels problems in clinical data and Knowledge Discovery in Databases (KDD) methods from clinical data mining are evaluated. Probabilistic and deterministic (exact-match) record linkage models were developed and compared through the use of a gold standard or truth dataset. Empirical comparison with ROC analysis of record linkage models showed a significant difference (p=.000) in performance of a probabilistic model over deterministic models. The methodology was evaluated with probabilistic linkage of records from the Web of Science, Medline, and CINAHL citation databases in the knowledge domains of medical informatics, HIV/AIDS, and nursing informatics. Data quality metrics for datasets prepared with probabilistic record linkage and information fusion showed improvement in completeness of key variables and reduction in sample bias. The resulting visualizations offered a richer information space for users through an increase in terms entering the visualization. The significant contributions of this work include the development of a novel model of probabilistic record linkage for biomedical citation databases which improves upon existing deterministic models. In addition a methodology for improving and enriching knowledge domain visualizations though a data preparation approach has been validated with analyses of multiple citation databases and knowledge domains. The data preparation methodology of probabilistic record linkage with information fusion offers a remedy for data quality problems, and the opportunity to enrich visualizations with added content for user exploration, which in turn improves the utility of knowledge domain visualizations as a medium for assessing available evidence and forming hypotheses.Ph.D., Information Science -- Drexel University, 200

In this paper, a mechatronics system was designed and implemented to include the subjects of artificial intelligence, control algorithms, robot servo motor control, and human-machine interface (HMI). The goal was to create an inexpensive, multi-functional robotics lab kit to promote students’ interest in STEM fields including computing and mechtronics. Industrial robotic systems have become vastly popular in manufacturing and other industries, and the demand for individuals with related skills is rapidly increasing. Robots can complete jobs that are dangerous, dull, or dirty for humans to perform. Recently, more and more collaborative robotic systems have been developed and implemented in the industry. Collaborative robots utilize artificial intelligence to become aware of and capable of interacting with a human operator in progressively natural ways. The work created a computer vision-based collaborative robotic system that can be controlled via several different methods including a touch screen HMI, hand gestures, and hard coding via the microcontroller integrated development environment (IDE). The flexibility provided in the framework resulted in an educational lab kit with varying levels of difficulty across several topics such as C and Python programming, machine learning, HMI design, and robotics. The hardware being used in this project includes a Raspberry Pi 4, an Arduino Due, a Braccio Robotics Kit, a Raspberry Pi 4 compatible vision module, and a 5-inch touchscreen display. We anticipate this education lab kit will improve the effectiveness of student learning in the field of mechatronics

Investigating the relationship between AI and trust in human-AI collaboration

With the increasing development of information technology, the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) has been widespread and has empowered virtual team collaboration by increasing collaboration efficiency and achieving superior collaboration results in recent years. Trust in the process of human-AI interaction has been identified as a challenge for team collaboration in this context. However, little research has investigated the relationship between human-AI interaction and trust. This study proposes a theoretical model of the relationship between human-AI interaction and team members’ trust during collaboration processes. We conclude that team members’ cognitive and emotional perceptions during the interaction process are associated with their trust towards AI. Moreover, the relationship could also be moderated by the specific AI implementation traits. Our model provides a holistic view of human-AI interaction and its association with team members’ trust in the context of team collaboration

Intelligent Voice Email Agent: A Multimedia Solution

Intelligent agent theory is an important concept in artificial intelligent area. An intelligent agent, in a nutshell, is an intelligent program that uses agent communication protocols to exchange information for automatic problem solving, performing specific tasks on behalf of their users. Our objective is to investigate what an intelligent agent consists of and to implement several important aspects of it. In particular, we are interested in an intelligent agent that is able to take care of the incoming messages while the user is concentrating on some other duties. We develop an agent-based design framework and implement an intelligent agent system - voice email system that monitors incoming emails for us while we are surfing the Internet. A special feature of this system is that the agent reads any new messages for users. This initiative is based on the perception of real world needs and the academic research development. Based on what we have done, we can extend our agent capabilities. For example, two mail agents should be able to communicate each other to achieve more complicated task

The research explores a scientific problem on the quantum strategy creation and implementation by the interlocking interconnecting directors in the boards of directors in the modern organizations at the time of globalization, solving the winning virtuous strategy search, the most effective strategy selection and the organizational strategy optimization paradigms. We know that, having the different mindset architectures, the directors in the interlocking interconnecting directors networks in the boards of directors in the modern organizations complete the information sensing, filtering, processing, resonant absorption, analysis, strategy decision making processes with the aim to create and implement the most effective optimal winning virtuous organization development strategy, applying the early researched deductive, inductive and abductive logics. We propose that the new quantum strategy can be considered as a most effective optimal winning virtuous organizational strategy, allowing the board of directors to set a right direction vector toward the business development, to establish a necessary actions plan and to reach the sustainable business profitability goals in the economies of the scales and scopes. We explain that the quantum strategy can be formulated, going from: 1) the new quantum logic principles in the Copenhagen interpretation in the quantum mechanics science, 2) the deductive, inductive and abductive logics existing knowledge in the philosophy science, and 3) the modern strategy research findings in the business administration science. We think that the directors in the boards of directors in the complex organizations can implement the quantum strategies with the ultimate goal to build the prosperous organizations in the economies of the scale and scope at the time of the disruptive changes and opportunities by the globalization
