    Identification of significant factors for air pollution levels using a neural network based knowledge discovery system

    Artificial neural network (ANN) is a commonly used approach to estimate or forecast air pollution levels, which are usually assessed by the concentrations of air contaminants such as nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, ozone, and suspended particulate matters (PMs) in the atmosphere of the concerned areas. Even through ANN can accurately estimate air pollution levels they are numerical enigmas and unable to provide explicit knowledge of air pollution levels by air pollution factors (e.g. traffic and meteorological factors). This paper proposed a neural network based knowledge discovery system aimed at overcoming this limitation in ANN. The system consists of two units: a) an ANN unit, which is used to estimate the air pollution levels based on relevant air pollution factors; b) a knowledge discovery unit, which is used to extract explicit knowledge from the ANN unit. To demonstrate the practicability of this neural network based knowledge discovery system, numerical data on mass concentrations of PM2.5 and PM1.0, meteorological and traffic data measured near a busy traffic road in Hangzhou city were applied to investigate the air pollution levels and the potential air pollution factors that may impact on the concentrations of these PMs. Results suggest that the proposed neural network based knowledge discovery system can accurately estimate air pollution levels and identify significant factors that have impact on air pollution levels

    A review on the current Status of Numerical Weather Prediction in Portugal 2021: surface–atmosphere interactions

    Earth system modelling is currently playing an increasing role in weather forecasting and understanding climate change, however, the operation, deployment and development of numerical Earth system models are extremely demanding in terms of computational resources and human effort. Merging synergies has become a natural process by which national meteorological services assess and contribute to the development of such systems. With the advent of joining synergies at the national level, the second edition of the workshop on Numerical Weather Prediction in Portugal was promoted by the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere, I.P. (IPMA), in cooperation with several Portuguese Universities. The event was hosted by the University of Évora, during the period of 11–12 of November 2021. It was dedicated to surface–atmosphere interactions and allowed the exchange of experiences between experts, students and newcomers. The workshop provided a refreshed overview of ongoing research and development topics in Portugal on surface–atmosphere interaction modelling and its applications and an opportunity to revisit some of the concepts associated with this area of atmospheric sciences.     National Environmental Meteorological Services in China

    The environmental meteorological services in China are concerned with atmospheric environmental quality, which is directly related to human activities and affects human health. In recent years, air pollution and other environmental problems have attracted nationwide attention in China, so the environmental meteorological services have been developed rapidly. To provide better meteorological monitoring and forecasting services, the Environmental Meteorological Centre of China Meteorological Administration was established in March 2014 by integrating the resources of various national service units. We review the development of China’s national environmental meteorological services and highlight their current status including major technological capabilities. We also explore future trends of the national environmental meteorological services by analysing deficiencies, gaps in supply and demand, and capabilities of the current environmental meteorological services
