    Survey on the Family of the Recursive-Rule Extraction Algorithm

    In this paper, we first review the theoretical and historical backgrounds on rule extraction from neural network ensembles. Because the structures of previous neural network ensembles were quite complicated, research on an efficient rule extraction algorithm from neural network ensembles has been sparse, even though a practical need exists for rule extraction in Big Data datasets. We describe the Recursive-Rule extraction (Re-RX) algorithm, which is an important step toward handling large datasets. Then we survey the family of the Recursive-Rule extraction algorithm, i.e. the Multiple-MLP Ensemble Re-RX algorithm, and present concrete applications in financial and medical domains that require extremely high accuracy for classification rules. Finally, we mention two promising ideas to considerably enhance the accuracy of the Multiple-MLP Ensemble Re-RX algorithm. We also discuss developments in the near future that will make the Multiple-MLP Ensemble Re-RX algorithm much more accurate, concise, and comprehensible rule extraction from mixed datasets

    Diffusion maps and local models for wind power prediction

We will compare ridge regression models for K–means clusters obtained over DM features, against the models obtained for clusters constructed over the original meteorological data or principal components, and also against a global model.     In the year 2010 the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies has successfully continued to follow its agenda to pursue theoretical research in the natural sciences. As stipulated in its charter, FIAS closely collaborates with extramural research institutions, like the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research in Frankfurt and the GSI Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion Research, Darmstadt and with research groups at the science departments of Goethe University. The institute also engages in the training of young researchers and the education of doctoral students. This Annual Report documents how these goals have been pursued in the year 2010. Notable events in the scientific life of the Institute will be presented, e.g., teaching activities in the framework of the Frankfurt International Graduate School for Science (FIGSS), colloquium schedules, conferences organized by FIAS, and a full bibliography of publications by authors affiliated with FIAS. The main part of the Report consists of short one-page summaries describing the scientific progress reached in individual research projects in the year 2010..

    Tackling the supervised label ranking problem by bagging weak learners

    Preference learning is the branch of machine learning in charge of inducing preference models from data. In this paper we focus on the task known as label ranking problem, whose goal is to predict a ranking among the different labels the class variable can take. Our contribution is twofold: (i) taking as basis the tree-based algorithm LRT described in [1], we design weaker tree-based models which can be learnt more efficiently; and (ii) we show that bagging these weak learners improves not only the LRT algorithm, but also the state-of the-art one (IBLR [1]). Furthermore, the bagging algorithm which takes the weak LRT-based models as base classifiers is competitive in time with respect to LRT and IBLR methods. To check the good ness of our proposal, we conduct a broad experimental study over the standard benchmark used in the label ranking problem literature
