    In this dissertation a new mobile robot transportation system is developed for the modern laboratory automation to connect the distributed automated systems and workbenches. In the system, a series of scientific and technical robot indoor issues are presented and solved, including the multiple robot control strategy, the indoor transportation path planning, the hybrid robot indoor localization, the recharging optimization, the robot-automated door interface, the robot blind arm grasping & placing, etc. The experiments show the proposed system and methods are effective and efficient

    ON-BOARD ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE FOR FAILURE DETECTION AND SAFE TRAJECTORY GENERATION

    The use of autonomous flight vehicles has recently increased due to their versatility and capability of carrying out different type of missions in a wide range of flight conditions. Adequate commanded trajectory generation and modification, as well as high-performance trajectory tracking control laws have been an essential focus of researchers given that integration into the National Air Space (NAS) is becoming a primary need. However, the operational safety of these systems can be easily affected if abnormal flight conditions are present, thereby compromising the nominal bounds of design of the system\u27s flight envelop and trajectory following. This thesis focuses on investigating methodologies for modeling, prediction, and protection of autonomous vehicle trajectories under normal and abnormal flight conditions. An Artificial Immune System (AIS) framework is implemented for fault detection and identification in combination with the multi-goal Rapidly-Exploring Random Tree (RRT*) path planning algorithm to generate safe trajectories based on a reduced flight envelope. A high-fidelity model of a fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle is used to demonstrate the capabilities of the approach by timely generating safe trajectories as an alternative to original paths, while integrating 3D occupancy maps to simulate obstacle avoidance within an urban environment

However, few of them have been applied to groups of UAVs. The use of swarms allows to speed up the flight time and, thus, reducing the operational costs. When combined with Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms, a single system or operator can control all aircraft while optimal paths for each one can be computed. In order to introduce the current situation of these AI-based systems, a review of the most novel and relevant articles was carried out. This review was performed in two steps: first, a summary of the found articles; second, a quantitative analysis of the publications found based on different factors, such as the temporal evolution or the number of articles found based on different criteria. Therefore, this review provides not only a summary of the most recent work but it gives an overview of the trend in the use of AI algorithms in UAV swarms for Path Planning problems. The AI techniques of the articles found can be separated into four main groups based on their technique: reinforcement Learning techniques, Evolutive Computing techniques, Swarm Intelligence techniques, and, Graph Neural Networks.     An Approach Based on Particle Swarm Optimization for Inspection of Spacecraft Hulls by a Swarm of Miniaturized Robots

    The remoteness and hazards that are inherent to the operating environments of space infrastructures promote their need for automated robotic inspection. In particular, micrometeoroid and orbital debris impact and structural fatigue are common sources of damage to spacecraft hulls. Vibration sensing has been used to detect structural damage in spacecraft hulls as well as in structural health monitoring practices in industry by deploying static sensors. In this paper, we propose using a swarm of miniaturized vibration-sensing mobile robots realizing a network of mobile sensors. We present a distributed inspection algorithm based on the bio-inspired particle swarm optimization and evolutionary algorithm niching techniques to deliver the task of enumeration and localization of an a priori unknown number of vibration sources on a simplified 2.5D spacecraft surface. Our algorithm is deployed on a swarm of simulated cm-scale wheeled robots. These are guided in their inspection task by sensing vibrations arising from failure points on the surface which are detected by on-board accelerometers. We study three performance metrics: (1) proximity of the localized sources to the ground truth locations, (2) time to localize each source, and (3) time to finish the inspection task given a 75% inspection coverage threshold.     Toward Robots with Peripersonal Space Representation for Adaptive Behaviors

    The abilities to adapt and act autonomously in an unstructured and human-oriented environment are necessarily vital for the next generation of robots, which aim to safely cooperate with humans. While this adaptability is natural and feasible for humans, it is still very complex and challenging for robots. Observations and findings from psychology and neuroscience in respect to the development of the human sensorimotor system can inform the development of novel approaches to adaptive robotics. Among these is the formation of the representation of space closely surrounding the body, the Peripersonal Space (PPS) , from multisensory sources like vision, hearing, touch and proprioception, which helps to facilitate human activities within their surroundings. Taking inspiration from the virtual safety margin formed by the PPS representation in humans, this thesis first constructs an equivalent model of the safety zone for each body part of the iCub humanoid robot. This PPS layer serves as a distributed collision predictor, which translates visually detected objects approaching a robot\u2019s body parts (e.g., arm, hand) into the probabilities of a collision between those objects and body parts. This leads to adaptive avoidance behaviors in the robot via an optimization-based reactive controller. Notably, this visual reactive control pipeline can also seamlessly incorporate tactile input to guarantee safety in both pre- and post-collision phases in physical Human-Robot Interaction (pHRI). Concurrently, the controller is also able to take into account multiple targets (of manipulation reaching tasks) generated by a multiple Cartesian point planner. All components, namely the PPS, the multi-target motion planner (for manipulation reaching tasks), the reaching-with-avoidance controller and the humancentred visual perception, are combined harmoniously to form a hybrid control framework designed to provide safety for robots\u2019 interactions in a cluttered environment shared with human partners. Later, motivated by the development of manipulation skills in infants, in which the multisensory integration is thought to play an important role, a learning framework is proposed to allow a robot to learn the processes of forming sensory representations, namely visuomotor and visuotactile, from their own motor activities in the environment. Both multisensory integration models are constructed with Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) in such a way that their outputs are represented in motor space to facilitate the robot\u2019s subsequent actions

    Evolution of Control Programs for a Swarm of Autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

    Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are rapidly becoming a critical military asset. In the future, advances in miniaturization are going to drive the development of insect size UAVs. New approaches to controlling these swarms are required. The goal of this research is to develop a controller to direct a swarm of UAVs in accomplishing a given mission. While previous efforts have largely been limited to a two-dimensional model, a three-dimensional model has been developed for this project. Models of UAV capabilities including sensors, actuators and communications are presented. Genetic programming uses the principles of Darwinian evolution to generate computer programs to solve problems. A genetic programming approach is used to evolve control programs for UAV swarms. Evolved controllers are compared with a hand-crafted solution using quantitative and qualitative methods. Visualization and statistical methods are used to analyze solutions. Results indicate that genetic programming is capable of producing effective solutions to multi-objective control problems
