    Thesis (PhD) - Indiana University, Computer Sciences, 2008Most programming languages do not allow programs to inspect their static type information or perform computations on it. C++, however, lets programmers write template metaprograms, which enable programs to encode static information, perform compile-time computations, and make static decisions about run-time behavior. Many C++ libraries and applications use template metaprogramming to build specialized abstraction mechanisms, implement domain-specific safety checks, and improve run-time performance. Template metaprogramming is an emergent capability of the C++ type system, and the C++ language specification is informal and imprecise. As a result, template metaprogramming often involves heroic programming feats and often leads to code that is difficult to read and maintain. Furthermore, many template-based code generation and optimization techniques rely on particular compiler implementations, rather than language semantics, for performance gains. Motivated by the capabilities and techniques of C++ template metaprogramming, this thesis documents some common programming patterns, including static computation, type analysis, generative programming, and the encoding of domain-specific static checks. It also documents notable shortcomings to current practice, including limited support for reflection, semantic ambiguity, and other issues that arise from the pioneering nature of template metaprogramming. Finally, this thesis presents the design of a foundational programming language, motivated by the analysis of template metaprogramming, that allows programs to statically inspect type information, perform computations, and generate code. The language is specified as a core calculus and its capabilities are presented in an idealized setting

    Método de selección automática de algoritmos de correspondencia estéreo en ausencia de ground truth

    La correspondencia estéreo es un campo ampliamente estudiado que ha recibido una atención notable en las últimas tres décadas. Es posible encontrar en la literatura un número considerable de propuestas para resolver el problema de correspondencia estéreo. En contraste, las propuestas para evaluar cuantitativamente la calidad de los mapas de disparidad obtenidos a partir de los algoritmos de correspondencia estéreo son relativamente escasas. La selección de un algoritmo de correspondencia estéreo y sus respectivos parámetros para un caso de aplicación particular es un problema no trivial dada la dependencia entre la calidad de la estimación de un mapa de disparidad y el contenido de la escena de interés. Este trabajo de investigación propone una estrategia de selección de algoritmos de correspondencia estéreo a partir de los mapas de disparidad estimados, por medio de un proceso de evaluación en ausencia de ground truth. El método propuesto permitiría a un sistema de visión estéreo adaptarse a posibles cambios en las escenas al ser aplicados a problemas en el mundo real. Esta investigación es de interés para investigadores o ingenieros aplicando visión estéreo en campos de aplicación como la industria.Abstract: The stereo correspondence problem has received significant attention in literature during approximately three decades. A plethora of stereo correspondence algorithms can be found in literature. In contrast, the amount of methods to objectively and quantitatively evaluate the accuracy of disparity maps estimated from stereo correspondence algorithms is relatively low. The application of stereo correspondence algorithms on real world applications is not a trivial problem, mainly due to the existing dependence between the estimated disparity map quality, the algorithms parameter definition and the contents on the assessed scene. In this research a stereo correspondence algorithms selection method is proposed by assessing the quality of estimated disparity maps in absence of ground truth. The proposed method could be used in a stereo vision to increase the system robustness by adapting it to possible changes in real world applications.     Efficient image-based rendering

    Recent advancements in real-time ray tracing and deep learning have significantly enhanced the realism of computer-generated images. However, conventional 3D computer graphics (CG) can still be time-consuming and resource-intensive, particularly when creating photo-realistic simulations of complex or animated scenes. Image-based rendering (IBR) has emerged as an alternative approach that utilizes pre-captured images from the real world to generate realistic images in real-time, eliminating the need for extensive modeling. Although IBR has its advantages, it faces challenges in providing the same level of control over scene attributes as traditional CG pipelines and accurately reproducing complex scenes and objects with different materials, such as transparent objects. This thesis endeavors to address these issues by harnessing the power of deep learning and incorporating the fundamental principles of graphics and physical-based rendering. It offers an efficient solution that enables interactive manipulation of real-world dynamic scenes captured from sparse views, lighting positions, and times, as well as a physically-based approach that facilitates accurate reproduction of the view dependency effect resulting from the interaction between transparent objects and their surrounding environment. Additionally, this thesis develops a visibility metric that can identify artifacts in the reconstructed IBR images without observing the reference image, thereby contributing to the design of an effective IBR acquisition pipeline. Lastly, a perception-driven rendering technique is developed to provide high-fidelity visual content in virtual reality displays while retaining computational efficiency.Jüngste Fortschritte im Bereich Echtzeit-Raytracing und Deep Learning haben den Realismus computergenerierter Bilder erheblich verbessert. Konventionelle 3DComputergrafik (CG) kann jedoch nach wie vor zeit- und ressourcenintensiv sein, insbesondere bei der Erstellung fotorealistischer Simulationen von komplexen oder animierten Szenen. Das bildbasierte Rendering (IBR) hat sich als alternativer Ansatz herauskristallisiert, bei dem vorab aufgenommene Bilder aus der realen Welt verwendet werden, um realistische Bilder in Echtzeit zu erzeugen, so dass keine umfangreiche Modellierung erforderlich ist. Obwohl IBR seine Vorteile hat, ist es eine Herausforderung, das gleiche Maß an Kontrolle über Szenenattribute zu bieten wie traditionelle CG-Pipelines und komplexe Szenen und Objekte mit unterschiedlichen Materialien, wie z.B. transparente Objekte, akkurat wiederzugeben. In dieser Arbeit wird versucht, diese Probleme zu lösen, indem die Möglichkeiten des Deep Learning genutzt und die grundlegenden Prinzipien der Grafik und des physikalisch basierten Renderings einbezogen werden. Sie bietet eine effiziente Lösung, die eine interaktive Manipulation von dynamischen Szenen aus der realen Welt ermöglicht, die aus spärlichen Ansichten, Beleuchtungspositionen und Zeiten erfasst wurden, sowie einen physikalisch basierten Ansatz, der eine genaue Reproduktion des Effekts der Sichtabhängigkeit ermöglicht, der sich aus der Interaktion zwischen transparenten Objekten und ihrer Umgebung ergibt. Darüber hinaus wird in dieser Arbeit eine Sichtbarkeitsmetrik entwickelt, mit der Artefakte in den rekonstruierten IBR-Bildern identifiziert werden können, ohne das Referenzbild zu betrachten, und die somit zur Entwicklung einer effektiven IBR-Erfassungspipeline beiträgt. Schließlich wird ein wahrnehmungsgesteuertes Rendering-Verfahren entwickelt, um visuelle Inhalte in Virtual-Reality-Displays mit hoherWiedergabetreue zu liefern und gleichzeitig die Rechenleistung zu erhalten

    Robot navigation includes different interrelated activities such as perception - obtaining and interpreting sensory information; exploration - the strategy that guides the robot to select the next direction to go; mapping - the construction of a spatial representation by using the sensory information perceived; localization - the strategy to estimate the robot position within the spatial map; path planning - the strategy to find a path towards a goal location being optimal or not; and path execution, where motor actions are determined and adapted to environmental changes. This book integrates results from the research work of authors all over the world, addressing the abovementioned activities and analyzing the critical implications of dealing with dynamic environments.     Contributions to reconfigurable video coding and low bit rate video coding

    In this PhD Thesis, two different issues on video coding are stated and their corresponding proposed solutions discussed. In the first place, some problems of the use of video coding standards are identi ed and the potential of new reconfigurable platforms is put to the test. Specifically, the proposal from MPEG for a Reconfigurable Video Coding (RVC) standard is compared with a more ambitious proposal for Fully Configurable Video Coding (FCVC). In both cases, the objective is to nd a way for the definition of new video codecs without the concurrence of a classical standardization process, in order to reduce the time-to-market of new ideas while maintaining the proper interoperability between codecs. The main difference between these approaches is the ability of FCVC to reconfigure each program line in the encoder and decoder definition, while RVC only enables to conform the codec description from a database of standardized functional units. The proof of concept carried out in the FCVC prototype enabled to propose the incorporation of some of the FCVC capabilities in future versions of the RVC standard. The second part of the Thesis deals with the design and implementation of a filtering algorithm in a hybrid video encoder in order to simplify the high frequencies present in the prediction residue, which are the most expensive for the encoder in terms of output bit rate. By means of this filtering, the quantization scale employed by the video encoder in low bit rate is kept in reasonable values and the risk of appearance of encoding artifacts is reduced. The proposed algorithm includes a block for filter control that determines the proper amount of filtering from the encoder operating point and the characteristics of the sequence to be processed. This filter control is tuned according to perceptual considerations related with overall subjective quality assessment. Finally, the complete algorithm was tested by means of a standard subjective video quality assessment test, and the results showed a noticeable improvement in the quality score with respect to the non-filtered version, confirming that the proposed method reduces the presence of harmful low bit rate artifacts
