After the return to power of the Taliban in August 2021, many analysts wondered if the new Islamic emirate would be different from the one that had controlled much of the country between 1996-2001. The treatment of women since then, which has received extensive coverage, seems to indicate that their ideological stand has not changed. But there is one aspect that has been overlooked and that would help us answer that question: the policies towards the Shi‘a minority.

This essay aims to pave the way for a critical edition of Matilde Serao’s masterpiece, Il ventre di Napoli. We moved from the consideration that the recent revival of this author and the always more frequent re-editions of her texts are often not paired with an appropriate philological in-depth study. Il ventre di Napoli was published in 1884 for the first time, on the columns of the roman periodical «Capitan Fracassa». During that same year the author collected those articles into a volume published by Treves. Almost twenty years after, an extended version of the articles appeared on «La Settimana», a journal that Serao published herself, and in 1906 she gathered them into a volume issued by the Neapolitan publisher Perrella. The focus is on the analysis of the author’s variants of Il ventre di Napoli, collected thanks to a systematic comparison between the four printed versions of Matilde Serao’s Il ventre di Napoli, in order to understand Serao’s revising style and comment how such changes affect the text its various versions

    Get PDF
The contribution investigates the changing dichotomy centre-periphery of the city of Rome through a rereading of Giancarlo De Cataldo’s fiction. The narrative of urban space in Romanzo criminale (2002), Suburra (2013) and La Svedese (2022) offers a crime reinterpretation of the Roman periphery from the late 1970s to the second decade of the 2000s. The author explores the complexities and ambiguities of living on the margins of the cultural context of reference, where the same condition of marginality is not the exclusive prerogative of the built-up areas near the ring roads, inhabited by a large part of the population for some time. The road infrastructure system, although in the common imagination it refers to the idea of transit and extremity, innervates the urban fabric, dialoguing with the more distant monumental city and becoming an identity zone with its own narrative to legitimise. The study intends to highlight how De Cataldo’s narrative work was able to represent the changing concept of suburbia and the different perception of territorial and moral degradation

Brazil’s presidential elections held last October were the closest in the country's history. The results reflect the polarized political environment and the scenario of political violence, institutional delegitimization, and social unrest perpetuated by the bolsonaristas, which reached its peak with the assault on the PalĂĄcio do Planalto This was the concluding act of a process of construction of dialectical and visual violence, steeped in denialism and delegitimization of the opponent. This led to a highly conflictual and aggressive electoral space, that institutions like the Tribunal Superior Eleitoral and TransparĂȘncia Eleitoral Brasil tried to counter. This essay investigates the pre-and post-electoral violence and the role of the institutions designated to mitigate it.Brazil’s presidential elections held last October were the closest in the country's history. Scuola, accademia, eloquenza. Luigi Maria Rezzi e i suoi rapporti epistolari nella Roma dell’Ottocento

    Get PDF

    Get PDF
The volume collects the contributions of academics from various Italian universities who have worked with Carmel Mary Coonan throughout her career at Ca’ Foscari University. Starting from the themes that have characterised Carmel’s research interests, including Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), professional development for language teachers and action research practice, the volume opens up to original methodological reflections and new lines of research in the field of educational linguistics. The relevance and variety of the studies here described confirm the lively and dynamic character of research and experimentation that shape our discipline. By questioning different language learning environments (both inside and outside language classroom), educational contexts (from kindergarten to university and beyond) and subjects (students as well as teachers), the volume highlights significant gains achieved in the field of language teaching and learning so far. At the same time, however, it makes clear the urge to further boost plurilingualism in language education, a goal that Carmel has tenaciously pursued throughout her whole career

The following article analises women writers’ contributions published on «Il Semplice» between 1995 and 1997. First, I look at the styles and the recurrent topics of the short stories, then I consider them within the wider context of mainstream literature by Italian women writers in the Nineties, especially writers who were representative of a postfeminist aesthetics. In the second part, the article looks in depth at the “pseudonyms’ issue”, by investigating possible reasons behind the choice of several male authors to publish under a female name. This research is based on original letters exchanged between the journal board and Daniele Benati; thanks to these documents it has been possible to reconstruct comments and thoughts behind the editing of some of the journal’s publications. In the conclusion, I discuss how the editorial board addressed gender-related issues, rejecting any kind of political and social engagement as it had been known during the Sixties and Seventies.
