Delays have a negative impact on motorists as well as in the economy. Traffic signals are implemented to reduce this burden, but this is determined by the signal timing.     New Signal Priority Strategies to Improve Public Transit Operations

    Rapid urbanization is causing severe congestion on road transport networks around the world. Improving service and attracting more travellers could be part of the solution. In urban areas, improving public transportation efficiency and reliability can reduce traffic congestion and improve transportation system performance. By facilitating public buses' movement through traffic signal-controlled intersections, a Transit Signal Priority (TSP) strategy can contribute to the reduction of queuing time at intersections. In the last decade, studies have focused on TSP systems to help public transportation organizations attract more travellers. However, the traditional TSP also has a significant downside; it is detrimental to non-prioritized movements and other transport modes. This research proposes new TSP strategies that account for the number of passengers on board as well as the real-time adherence of buses to their present schedules. Two methods have been proposed. First, buses are prioritized based on their load and their adherence to their schedules, while in the second method, the person delay at an intersection is optimized. The optimization approach in the first method uses a specific priority for public transit, while additional parameters are considered in the second method, like residual queue and arrival rate at the intersection. One of this research's main contributions is providing insight into the benefits of these new TSP methods along a corridor and on an isolated signalized intersection. The proposed methods need real-time information on transit operations, traffic signals status and vehicular flows. The lack of readily available infrastructure to provide all these data is compensated by using a traffic simulator, VISSIM, for an isolated intersection and an arterial corridor. The study area simulation results indicated that the new TSP methods performed better than the conventional TSP. For the investigated study area, it was shown that the second method performed better in an isolated signalized intersection, while the first method reduced traffic and environmental indices when used for an arterial corridor. Future research can investigate the effects of the proposed methodology on the urban network by using macrosimulation to see the effects of the proposed TSP on the network. Also, considering conflicting TSP requests in these methodologies could be another area for further research

    Deep learning for real-time traffic signal control on urban networks

    Real-time traffic signal controls are frequently challenged by (1) uncertain knowledge about the traffic states; (2) need for efficient computation to allow timely decisions; (3) multiple objectives such as traffic delays and vehicle emissions that are difficult to optimize; and (4) idealized assumptions about data completeness and quality that are often made in developing many theoretical signal control models. This thesis addresses these challenges by proposing two real-time signal control frameworks based on deep learning techniques, followed by extensive simulation tests that verifies their effectiveness in view of the aforementioned challenges. The first method, called the Nonlinear Decision Rule (NDR), defines a nonlinear mapping between network states and signal control parameters to network performances based on prevailing traffic conditions, and such a mapping is optimized via off-line simulation. The NDR is instantiated with two neural networks: feedforward neural network (FFNN) and recurrent neural network (RNN), which have different ways of processing traffic information in the near past. The NDR is implemented and tested within microscopic traffic simulation (S-Paramics) for a real-world network in West Glasgow, where the off-line training of the NDR amounts to a simulation-based optimization procedure aiming to reduce delay, CO2 and black carbon emissions. Extensive tests are performed to assess the NDR framework, not only in terms of its effectiveness in optimizing different traffic and environmental objectives, but also in relation to local vs. global benefits, trade-off between delay and emissions, impact of sensor locations, and different levels of network saturation. The second method, called the Advanced Reinforcement Learning (ARL), employs the potential-based reward shaping function using Q-learning and 3rd party advisor to enhance its performance over conventional reinforcement learning. The potential-based reward shaping in this thesis obtains an opinion from the 3rd party advisor when calculating reward. This technique can resolve the problem of sparse reward and slow learning speed. The ARL is tested with a range of existing reinforcement learning methods. The results clearly show that ARL outperforms the other models in almost all the scenarios. Lastly, this thesis evaluates the impact of information availability and quality on different real-time signal control methods, including the two proposed ones. This is driven by the observation that most responsive signal control models in the literature tend to make idealized assumptions on the quality and availability of data. This research shows the varying levels of performance deterioration of different signal controllers in the presence of missing data, data noise, and different data types. Such knowledge and insights are crucial for real-world implementation of these signal control methods.Open Acces

    Kooperativno upravljanje priljevnim tokovima na urbanim autocestama zasnovano na strojnom učenju

    To cope with today’s urban motorway congestions and the inability to increase motorway capacity in urban environments requires the implementation of advanced control methods. These methods are an integral part of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). An ITS essentially integrates information and communication technology to solve the congestion problems. Ramp metering (RM) and Variable Speed Limit Control (VSLC) are some of the most widely used urban motorway traffic control methods. RM provide direct influence over the on-ramp flows by using specialized traffic lights, while the VSLC control speed of mainstream flow by using variable messaging signs. A dedicated algorithm for RM or VSLC uses sensory data form an urban motorway to compute actions that will have a positive impact on both types of traffic flow. This study will focus on the cooperation of an RM and a VSLC systems, and the integration of several different RM algorithms into a single algorithm called INTEGRA. The algorithm is created by using the Adaptive Neuro-fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) as an instance of machine learning techniques. Furthermore, INTGERA is expanded in order to integrate its original functionality with a recurrent neural network for traffic demand prediction. As the final step, this doctoral thesis will provide evaluation of different criteria for learning dataset functional setup, based on which ANFIS neural network of INTEGRA will be learned. Results of all mentioned approaches will be compared and discussed in relation with other commonly used urban motorway control methods.Glavnina istraživanja u ovom doktorskom radu vezana je upravo za upravljanje priljevnim tokovima s posebnim naglaskom na kooperaciju s drugim sustavima upravljanja prometom, te primjeni strojnog učenja. Također, u kooperaciji s upravljanjem priljevnih tokova razmatrat će se druge upravljačke metode kao što su sustav zabrane prometovanja određenim prometnim trakama, te potpuno ili djelomično upravljanje vozilima opremljenim posebnim računalnim jedinicama. Od strane autora predložen je neuro-neizraziti okvir za učenje koji omogućuje integraciju različitih strategija upravljanja priljevnim tokovima. CTMSIM makro-simulacijski alat koji je izrađen u Matlab programskom okruženju korišten je u simulaciji odabranih metoda upravljanja prometom na urbanim autocestama. Simulator je proširen od strana autora kako bi podržao kooperativno upravljanje priljevnim tokovima, kao i sustav za promjenjivo ograničenje brzina vozila
