    Towards a Network-based Approach for Smartphone Security

    Smartphones have become an important utility that affects many aspects of our daily life. Due to their large dissemination and the tasks that are performed with them, they have also become a valuable target for criminals. Their specific capabilities and the way they are used introduce new threats in terms of information security. The research field of smartphone security has gained a lot of momentum in the past eight years. Approaches that have been presented so far focus on investigating design flaws of smartphone operating systems as well as their potential misuse by an adversary. Countermeasures are often realized based upon extensions made to the operating system itself, following a host-based design approach. However, there is a lack of network-based mechanisms that allow a secure integration of smartphones into existing IT infrastructures. This topic is especially relevant for companies whose employees use smartphones for business tasks. This thesis presents a novel, network-based approach for smartphone security called CADS: Context-related Signature and Anomaly Detection for Smartphones. It allows to determine the security status of smartphones by analyzing three aspects: (1) their current configuration in terms of installed software and available hardware, (2) their behavior and (3) the context they are currently used in. Depending on the determined security status, enforcement actions can be defined in order to allow or to deny access to services provided by the respective IT infrastructure. The approach is based upon the distributed collection and central analysis of data about smartphones. In contrast to other approaches, it explicitly supports to leverage existing security services both for analysis and enforcement purposes. A proof of concept is implemented based upon the IF-MAP protocol for network security and the Google Android platform. An evaluation verifies (1) that the CADS approach is able to detect so-called sensor sniffing attacks and (2) that reactions can be triggered based on detection results to counter ongoing attacks. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the functionality of an existing, host-based approach that relies on modifications of the Android smartphone platform can be mimicked by the CADS approach. The advantage of CADS is that it does not need any modifications of the Android platform itself

    Novel Techniques of Using Diversity in Software Security and Information Hiding

    Diversity is an important and valuable concept that has been adopted in many fields to reduce correlated risks and to increase survivability. In information security, diversity also helps to increase both defense capability and fault tolerance for information systems and communication networks, where diversity can be adopted from many different perspectives. This dissertation, in particular, focuses mainly on two aspects of diversity – the application software diversity and the diversity in data interpretation. Software diversity has many advantages over mono-culture in improving system security. A number of previous researches focused on utilizing existing off the shelf diverse software for network protection and intrusion detection, many of which depend on an important assumption – the diverse software utilized in the system is vulnerable only to different exploits. In the first work of this dissertation, we perform a systematic analysis on more than 6,000 vulnerabilities published in 2007 to evaluate the extent to which this assumption is valid. Our results show that the majority of the vulnerable application software products either do not have the same vulnerability, or cannot be compromised with the same exploit code. Following this work, we then propose an intrusion detection scheme which builds on two diverse programs to detect sophisticated attacks on security-critical data. Our model learns the underlying semantic correlation of the argument values in these programs, and consequently gains more accurate context information compared to existing schemes. Through experiments, we show that such context information is effective in detecting attacks which manipulate erratic arguments with comparable false-positive rates. Software diversity does not only exist on desktop and mainframe computers, it also exists on mobile platforms like smartphone operating systems. In our third work in this dissertation, we propose to investigate applications that run on diverse mobile platforms (e.g., Android and iOS) and to use them as the baseline for comparing their security architectures. Assuming that such applications need the same types of privileges to provide the same functionality on different mobile platforms, our analysis of more than 2,000 applications shows that those executing on iOS consistently ask for more permissions than their counterparts running on Android. We additionally analyze the underlying reasons and find out that part of the permission usage differences is caused by third-party libraries used in these applications. Different from software diversity, the fourth work in this dissertation focuses on the diversity in data interpretation, which helps to defend against coercion attacks. We propose Dummy-Relocatable Steganographic file system (DRSteg) to provide deniability in multi user environments where the adversary may have multiple snapshots of the disk content. The diverse ways of interpreting data in the storage allows a data owner to surrender only some data and attribute the unexplained changes across snapshots to the dummy data which are random bits. The level of deniability offered by our file system is configurable by the users, to balance against the resulting performance overhead. Additionally, our design guarantees the integrity of the protected data, except where users voluntarily overwrite data under duress. This dissertation makes valuable contributions on utilizing diversity in software security and information hiding. The systematic evaluation results obtained for mobile and desktop diverse software are important and useful to both research literature and industrial organizations. The proposed intrusion detection system and steganographic file system have been implemented as prototypes, which are effective in protecting valuable user data against adversaries in various threat scenarios

    Defense and Attack Techniques against File-based TOCTOU Vulnerabilities: a Systematic Review

    File-based Time-of-Check to Time-of-Use (TOCTOU) race conditions are a well-known type of security vulnerability. A wide variety of techniques have been proposed to detect, mitigate, avoid, and exploit these vulnerabilities over the past 35 years. However, despite these research efforts, TOCTOU vulnerabilities remain unsolved due to their non-deterministic nature and the particularities of the different filesystems involved in running vulnerable programs, especially in Unix-like operating system environments. In this paper, we present a systematic literature review on defense and attack techniques related to the file-based TOCTOU vulnerability. We apply a reproducible methodology to search, filter, and analyze the most relevant research proposals to define a global and understandable vision of existing solutions. The results of this analysis are finally used to discuss future research directions that can be explored to move towards a universal solution to this type of vulnerability. Autho

    Analysis of Human Affect and Bug Patterns to Improve Software Quality and Security

    The impact of software is ever increasing as more and more systems are being software operated. Despite the usefulness of software, many instances software failures have been causing tremendous losses in lives and dollars. Software failures take place because of bugs (i.e., faults) in the software systems. These bugs cause the program to malfunction or crash and expose security vulnerabilities exploitable by malicious hackers. Studies confirm that software defects and vulnerabilities appear in source code largely due to the human mistakes and errors of the developers. Human performance is impacted by the underlying development process and human affects, such as sentiment and emotion. This thesis examines these human affects of software developers, which have drawn recent interests in the community. For capturing developers’ sentimental and emotional states, we have developed several software tools (i.e., SentiStrength-SE, DEVA, and MarValous). These are novel tools facilitating automatic detection of sentiments and emotions from the software engineering textual artifacts. Using such an automated tool, the developers’ sentimental variations are studied with respect to the underlying development tasks (e.g., bug-fixing, bug-introducing), development periods (i.e., days and times), team sizes and project sizes. We expose opportunities for exploiting developers’ sentiments for higher productivity and improved software quality. While developers’ sentiments and emotions can be leveraged for proactive and active safeguard in identifying and minimizing software bugs, this dissertation also includes in-depth studies of the relationship among various bug patterns, such as software defects, security vulnerabilities, and code smells to find actionable insights in minimizing software bugs and improving software quality and security. Bug patterns are exposed through mining software repositories and bug databases. These bug patterns are crucial in localizing bugs and security vulnerabilities in software codebase for fixing them, predicting portions of software susceptible to failure or exploitation by hackers, devising techniques for automated program repair, and avoiding code constructs and coding idioms that are bug-prone. The software tools produced from this thesis are empirically evaluated using standard measurement metrics (e.g., precision, recall). The findings of all the studies are validated with appropriate tests for statistical significance. Finally, based on our experience and in-depth analysis of the present state of the art, we expose avenues for further research and development towards a holistic approach for developing improved and secure software systems

Atualmente é um facto admitido que os sistemas informáticos estão cada vez mais presentes no dia-a-dia dos cidadãos, tendo assumido um papel fundamental nas suas vidas. O seu constante e rápido crescimento tem-se generalizado através do desenvolvimento de múltiplas aplicações disponíveis na Web ou destinadas a dipositivos móveis, que facilitam as suas tarefas diárias e estabelecem inclusivamente novos meios de interação social. A Administração Pública não podia ficar fora desta evolução das tecnologias de informação e dos sistemas de comunicação, sobretudo num período em que se visa a modernização e a simplificação administrativa. Tornou-se, assim, imprescindível para a Administração Pública evoluir nos serviços prestados ao cidadão adequando-os ao uso das tecnologias, promovendo uma Sociedade de Informação, baseada no desenvolvimento tecnológico. O presente projeto tem como objetivo o estudo da aplicação disponibilizada pela Administração Pública, Autenticação.gov para dispositivos móveis. Através do presente estudo foi possível perceber o comportamento da aplicação Auenticação.gov e efetuar um levantamento das suas vulnerabilidades. O sistema operativo móvel Android foi escolhido para este projeto, pelo domínio que representa no mercado dos dispositivos móveis, sendo o seu estudo importante para determinar a forma de efetuar uma análise às vulnerabilidades numa aplicação móvel. Por fim efetuou-se um estudo sobre a Chave Móvel Digital de modo a perceber o seu funcionamento comparando as suas funcionalidades com as do Cartão de Cidadão. Podemos assim concluir que a aplicação Autenticação.gov apresenta vulnerabilidades. Através da comparação das assinaturas eletrónicas efetuadas com o Cartão de Cidadão e a Chave Móvel Digital constatou-se que estas assinam os documentos de modo diferente
