Self-Supervised Learning to Prove Equivalence Between Straight-Line Programs via Rewrite Rules
We target the problem of automatically synthesizing proofs of semantic
equivalence between two programs made of sequences of statements. We represent
programs using abstract syntax trees (AST), where a given set of
semantics-preserving rewrite rules can be applied on a specific AST pattern to
generate a transformed and semantically equivalent program. In our system, two
programs are equivalent if there exists a sequence of application of these
rewrite rules that leads to rewriting one program into the other. We propose a
neural network architecture based on a transformer model to generate proofs of
equivalence between program pairs. The system outputs a sequence of rewrites,
and the validity of the sequence is simply checked by verifying it can be
applied. If no valid sequence is produced by the neural network, the system
reports the programs as non-equivalent, ensuring by design no programs may be
incorrectly reported as equivalent. Our system is fully implemented for a given
grammar which can represent straight-line programs with function calls and
multiple types. To efficiently train the system to generate such sequences, we
develop an original incremental training technique, named self-supervised
sample selection. We extensively study the effectiveness of this novel training
approach on proofs of increasing complexity and length. Our system, S4Eq,
achieves 97% proof success on a curated dataset of 10,000 pairs of equivalent

Examples of works to practice staccato technique in clarinet instrument
Klarnetin staccato tekniğini güçlendirme aşamaları eser çalışmalarıyla uygulanmıştır. Staccato
Sekiz özgün eser çalışmasının her
ENHANCING STUDENT ENGAGEMENT, TEACHER SELF-EFFICACY, AND PRINCIPAL LEADERSHIP SKILLS THROUGH MORNING MEETING IN AN ONLINE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
This study examined the experiences of educators in a small, rural elementary school who provided live instruction in an online setting during the COVID-19 pandemic. The scholarly practitioner collaborated with inquiry partners to enhance student engagement, teacher self-efficacy, and principal leadership skills by implementing Morning Meeting, a social and emotional learning program from Responsive Classroom®, when students participated in remote online learning. The scholarly practitioner used over four decades of research about efficacy and identified leadership strategies and approaches that assisted in building individual and collective teacher efficacy so that teachers could effectively engage students.
Behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement were identified in research and used by teachers to determine the quality of participation in Morning Meeting. Teachers took daily and weekly attendance to measure engagement, and the scholarly practitioner facilitated team meetings with groups of teachers to compile comments and statements regarding student engagement. These statements were coded using pre-selected codes based on research about types of student engagement.
The scholarly practitioner facilitated the administration of a pre-study and post-study Teacher Self-Efficacy Scale so that individual, grade-span, and full-school efficacy data could be compiled. In addition, the scholarly practitioner held team meetings with the teachers to compile comments and categorize those statements into four areas: job accomplishment, skill development, social interaction, and coping with job stress. These four areas were also coded using the four categories described on the Teacher Self-Efficacy Scale.
The scholarly practitioner also maintained a journal using a self-reflection tool about the lived experiences before, during, and after the study. The emphasis on this journal was about the development and growth of leadership skills, and the categories were pre-coded using Bernard Bass’s categories of transformational leadership: individualized consideration, inspirational motivation, idealized influence, and intellectual stimulation.
Student engagement increased throughout the study, and 77 percent of students were fully engaged during the study. Teachers expressed an increase in collective efficacy at the conclusion of the study, and six of the eight teachers reported individual increases in efficacy. The scholarly practitioner’s use of differentiation within the context of transformational leadership was observed most frequently in the study

The determinants of value addition: a crtitical analysis of global software engineering industry in Sri Lanka
It was evident through the literature that the perceived value delivery of the global software
engineering industry is low due to various facts. Therefore, this research concerns global
software product companies in Sri Lanka to explore the software engineering methods and
practices in increasing the value addition. The overall aim of the study is to identify the key
determinants for value addition in the global software engineering industry and critically
evaluate the impact of them for the software product companies to help maximise the value
addition to ultimately assure the sustainability of the industry.
An exploratory research approach was used initially since findings would emerge while the
study unfolds. Mixed method was employed as the literature itself was inadequate to
investigate the problem effectively to formulate the research framework. Twenty-three face-to-face online interviews were conducted with the subject matter experts covering all the
disciplines from the targeted organisations which was combined with the literature findings as
well as the outcomes of the market research outcomes conducted by both government and nongovernment institutes. Data from the interviews were analysed using NVivo 12. The findings
of the existing literature were verified through the exploratory study and the outcomes were
used to formulate the questionnaire for the public survey. 371 responses were considered after
cleansing the total responses received for the data analysis through SPSS 21 with alpha level
0.05. Internal consistency test was done before the descriptive analysis. After assuring the
reliability of the dataset, the correlation test, multiple regression test and analysis of variance
(ANOVA) test were carried out to fulfil the requirements of meeting the research objectives.
Five determinants for value addition were identified along with the key themes for each area.
They are staffing, delivery process, use of tools, governance, and technology infrastructure.
The cross-functional and self-organised teams built around the value streams, employing a
properly interconnected software delivery process with the right governance in the delivery
pipelines, selection of tools and providing the right infrastructure increases the value delivery.
Moreover, the constraints for value addition are poor interconnection in the internal processes,
rigid functional hierarchies, inaccurate selections and uses of tools, inflexible team
arrangements and inadequate focus for the technology infrastructure. The findings add to the
existing body of knowledge on increasing the value addition by employing effective processes,
practices and tools and the impacts of inaccurate applications the same in the global software
engineering industry
Image classification over unknown and anomalous domains
A longstanding goal in computer vision research is to develop methods that are simultaneously applicable to a broad range of prediction problems. In contrast to this, models often perform best when they are specialized to some task or data type. This thesis investigates the challenges of learning models that generalize well over multiple unknown or anomalous modes and domains in data, and presents new solutions for learning robustly in this setting.
Initial investigations focus on normalization for distributions that contain multiple sources (e.g. images in different styles like cartoons or photos). Experiments demonstrate the extent to which existing modules, batch normalization in particular, struggle with such heterogeneous data, and a new solution is proposed that can better handle data from multiple visual modes, using differing sample statistics for each.
While ideas to counter the overspecialization of models have been formulated in sub-disciplines of transfer learning, e.g. multi-domain and multi-task learning, these usually rely on the existence of meta information, such as task or domain labels. Relaxing this assumption gives rise to a new transfer learning setting, called latent domain learning in this thesis, in which training and inference are carried out over data from multiple visual domains, without domain-level annotations. Customized solutions are required for this, as the performance of standard models degrades: a new data augmentation technique that interpolates between latent domains in an unsupervised way is presented, alongside a dedicated module that sparsely accounts for hidden domains in data, without requiring domain labels to do so.
In addition, the thesis studies the problem of classifying previously unseen or anomalous modes in data, a fundamental problem in one-class learning, and anomaly detection in particular. While recent ideas have been focused on developing self-supervised solutions for the one-class setting, in this thesis new methods based on transfer learning are formulated. Extensive experimental evidence demonstrates that a transfer-based perspective benefits new problems that have recently been proposed in anomaly detection literature, in particular challenging semantic detection tasks
The interpretation of Islam and nationalism by the elite through the English language media in Pakistan.
The media is constructed and interpreted through what people 'know'. That knowledge is, forthe most part, created through day to day experiences. In Pakistan, Islam and nationalism aretwo components of this social knowledge which are intrinsically tied to the experiences of thePakistani people. Censorship and selection are means through which this knowledge isarticulated and interpreted.General conceptions of partially shared large scale bodies of knowledge and ideas reinforce, and are reinforced by, general medium of mass communication: the print and electronic media.Focusing on the govermnent, media institutions and Pakistani elites, I describe and analyse thedifferent, sometimes conflicting, interpretations of Islam and Pakistani nationalism manifest inand through media productions presented in Pakistan. The media means many things, not least of which is power. It is the media as a source ofpower that is so frequently controlled, directed and manipulated. The terminology may beslightly different according to the context within which one is talking - propaganda, selection, etc. - but ultimately it comes down to the same thing - censorship. Each of the three groups:government, media institutions and Pakistani elites - have the power to interpret and censormedia content and consideration must be taken of each of the other power holders consequentlyrestricting the power of each group in relation to the other two. The processes of thismanipulation and their consequences form the major themes of this thesis
Full stack development toward a trapped ion logical qubit
Quantum error correction is a key step toward the construction of a large-scale quantum computer, by preventing small infidelities in quantum gates from accumulating over the course of an algorithm. Detecting and correcting errors is achieved by using multiple physical qubits to form a smaller number of robust logical
qubits. The physical implementation of a logical qubit requires multiple qubits, on which high fidelity gates
can be performed.
The project aims to realize a logical qubit based on ions confined on a microfabricated surface trap. Each
physical qubit will be a microwave dressed state qubit based on 171Yb+ ions. Gates are intended to be realized through RF and microwave radiation in combination with magnetic field gradients. The project vertically integrates software down to hardware compilation layers in order to deliver, in the near future, a fully functional small device demonstrator.
This thesis presents novel results on multiple layers of a full stack quantum computer model. On the hardware level a robust quantum gate is studied and ion displacement over the X-junction geometry is demonstrated.
The experimental organization is optimized through automation and compressed waveform data transmission. A new quantum assembly language purely dedicated to trapped ion quantum computers is introduced. The demonstrator is aimed at testing implementation of quantum error correction codes while preparing for larger
scale iterations.Open Acces
Machine learning for managing structured and semi-structured data
As the digitalization of private, commercial, and public sectors advances rapidly, an increasing amount of data is becoming available. In order to gain insights or knowledge from these enormous amounts of raw data, a deep analysis is essential. The immense volume requires highly automated processes with minimal manual interaction. In recent years, machine learning methods have taken on a central role in this task. In addition to the individual data points, their interrelationships often play a decisive role, e.g. whether two patients are related to each other or whether they are treated by the same physician. Hence, relational learning is an important branch of research, which studies how to harness this explicitly available structural information between different data points. Recently, graph neural networks have gained importance. These can be considered an extension of convolutional neural networks from regular grids to general (irregular) graphs.
Knowledge graphs play an essential role in representing facts about entities in a machine-readable way. While great efforts are made to store as many facts as possible in these graphs, they often remain incomplete, i.e., true facts are missing. Manual verification and expansion of the graphs is becoming increasingly difficult due to the large volume of data and must therefore be assisted or substituted by automated procedures which predict missing facts. The field of knowledge graph completion can be roughly divided into two categories: Link Prediction and Entity Alignment. In Link Prediction, machine learning models are trained to predict unknown facts between entities based on the known facts. Entity Alignment aims at identifying shared entities between graphs in order to link several such knowledge graphs based on some provided seed alignment pairs.
In this thesis, we present important advances in the field of knowledge graph completion. For Entity Alignment, we show how to reduce the number of required seed alignments while maintaining performance by novel active learning techniques. We also discuss the power of textual features and show that graph-neural-network-based methods have difficulties with noisy alignment data. For Link Prediction, we demonstrate how to improve the prediction for unknown entities at training time by exploiting additional metadata on individual statements, often available in modern graphs. Supported with results from a large-scale experimental study, we present an analysis of the effect of individual components of machine learning models, e.g., the interaction function or loss criterion, on the task of link prediction. We also introduce a software library that simplifies the implementation and study of such components and makes them accessible to a wide research community, ranging from relational learning researchers to applied fields, such as life sciences. Finally, we propose a novel metric for evaluating ranking results, as used for both completion tasks. It allows for easier interpretation and comparison, especially in cases with different numbers of ranking candidates, as encountered in the de-facto standard evaluation protocols for both tasks.
Combinatorics and Stochasticity for Chemical Reaction Networks
Stochastic chemical reaction networks (SCRNs) are a mathematical model which serves as a first approximation to ensembles of interacting molecules. SCRNs approximate such mixtures as always being well-mixed and consisting of a finite number of molecules, and describe their probabilistic evolution according to the law of mass-action. In this thesis, we attempt to develop a mathematical formalism based on formal power series for defining and analyzing SCRNs that was inspired by two different questions. The first question relates to the equilibrium states of systems of polymerization. Formal power series methods in this case allow us to tame the combinatorial complexity of polymer configurations as well as the infinite state space of possible mixture states. Chapter 1 presents an application of these methods to a model of polymerizing scaffolds. The second question relates to the expressive power of SCRNs as generators of stochasticity. In Chapter 2, we show that SCRNs are universal approximators of discrete distributions, even when only allowing for systems with detailed-balance. We further show that SCRNs can exactly simulate Boltzmann machines. In Chapter 3, we develop a formalism for defining the semantics of SCRNs in terms of formal power series which grew as a result of work included in the previous chapters. We use that formulation to derive expressions for the dynamics and stationary states of SCRNs. Finally, we focus on systems that satisfy complex balance and conservation of mass and derive a general expressions for their factorial moments using generating function methods
