The effects of product placement, in films, on the consumer's purchase intentions
Traditional forms of communication have been losing their once golden effectiveness due to, mainly, consumer saturation. Since the modern world is characterized by an advertising clutter, in wich each citizen living in urban areas is exposed daily to an average of 3,500 stimuli, companies are now looking for ways to differentiate themselves from competitors, and are now immersing their ways onto product placement.
As investment in product placements increases over the years, making it now a billion dollar industry, there is a necessity to deeply explore this theme to better understand what its main effects on consumers are.
Purchase intention is a step that mediates consumer attitude and effective behavior. The link between this stage of consumer behavior and product placement represents an area in which previous scholarsâ results have not been overly consistent, making it not as crystal clear as desired.
The present research conveys an experimental design resorting to eye tracking tools and softwares, providing data concerning the viewersâ levels of attention. As this experiment also aims to denote differences between reactions to product placements in different contexts (comedy vs. drama), two experimental and two control groups were defined, totaling a sample of 85 subjects.
This paper covers the effects that the variables identified on the literature review have on brand attitudes, and subsequentely, on purchase intentions. A intenção de compra representa o primeiro passo no processo de decisĂŁo de compra do consumidor, e a ligação entre este patamar e o product placement representa uma ĂĄrea que nĂŁo tem suscitado coerĂȘncia em estudos passados, tornando-a pouco clara.
O presente estudo experimental recorre a ferramentas e software de eye tracking, proporcionando informação acerca dos nĂveis de atenção dos espectadores em relação aos estĂmulos definidos. Dado que esta experiĂȘncia tambĂ©m pretende identificar diferenças nas reacçÔes ao product placement em contextos distintos (comĂ©dia vs. drama), dois grupos experimentais e dois grupos de controlo foram definidos, totalizando uma amostra de 85 elementos.

The Retention and Processing of Communications Data for Law Enforcement: A Challenge for Privacy
Law enforcement agencies are dominant end users of information communication technologies. These technologies are not necessarily created for pursuing criminal justice objectives. They are mechanisms that are built, administered, and maintained by private actors for their own purposes and later incorporated into law enforcement processes. They serve an effective role in the investigation, detection, and prosecution of crime, particularly through their collection and processing of relevant data. For the purposes of this thesis, the data at issue concerns the who, where, when, and how of a communication. Broadly classed as 'communications data' this information is readily and consistently available due to technological developments which result in blanket collection and retention, enable easier access, and create opportunities to derive greater meaning from the information through data analysis. The thesis examines the challenges of reconciling privacy with the use of this data in policing by conducting a critical analysis of 'how, and to what extent, do the current legal and policy frameworks governing the retention of, access to, and analysis of communications data by law enforcement, constitute a violation of privacy which requires substantive changes to the legal regime?'.
Employing the approach of Thomas P. Hughes for examining socio-technical systems, the thesis argues that technology and privacy are co-constructed. This is evidenced though the evolution of the technology and the relevant legal and policy factors which contributed to the information communication system's development and acceptance as a policing tool. Three key areas, namely data retention, access to data, and data analysis are used to explore how communications data intersects with law enforcement objectives. Each element of the system is critiqued to assess significant changes in actors and roles, information types, and transmission principles. Utilising Helen Nissenbaum's theory of contextual integrity, it is argued that changes in each of the three key areas represent a prima facie violation of informational norms. Where a violation of these norms is identified, it is then evaluated against the perceived benefits of the technology to determine the impact on privacy. The impact on privacy is weighed against the existing legal safeguards in the investigatory powers mechanisms. Examining the privacy interest in a contextual manner allows for the specifics of the technology system to be incorporated into the assessment of the privacy violations.
The thesis concludes that it is insufficient to apply traditional interpretations of privacy to technologies which have fundamentally altered social expectations through the scale/scope of data, the deconstruction of traditional boundaries, the limitation of ephemerality, and changes in technologically mediated presence. Applying a legal framework which does not acknowledge this impact fails to guarantee fundamental privacy rights. A number of recommendations are advanced for reform of the investigatory powers mechanisms to ensure privacy is protected when communications data is utilised by law enforcement
Design-led approach for transferring the embodied skills of puppet stop-motion animators into haptic workspaces
This design-led research investigates the transfer of puppet stop-motion animatorsâ embodied
skills from the physical workspace into a digital environment. The approach is to create a
digital workspace that evokes an embodied animating experience and allows puppet stop-motion
animators to work in it unencumbered. The insights and outcomes of the practical
explorations are discussed from the perspective of embodied cognition. The digital workspace
employs haptic technology, an advanced multi-modal interface technology capable of invoking
the tactile, kinaesthetic and proprioceptive senses. The overall aim of this research is to
contribute, to the Human-Computer Interaction design community, design considerations and
strategies for developing haptic workspaces that can seamlessly transfer and accommodate
the rich embodied knowledge of non-digital skillful practitioners.
Following an experiential design methodology, a series of design studies in collaboration
with puppet stop-motion animators led to the development of a haptic workspace prototype
for producing stop-motion animations. Each design study practically explored the transfer of
different aspects of the puppet stop-motion animation practice into the haptic workspace.
Beginning with an initial haptic workspace prototype, its design was refined in each study
with the addition of new functionalities and new interaction metaphors which were always
developed with the aim to create and maintain an embodied animating experience. The
method of multiple streams of reflection was proposed as an important design tool for
identifying, understanding and articulating design insights, empirical results and contextual
considerations throughout the design studies.
This thesis documents the development of the haptic workspace prototype and discusses
the collected design insights and empirical results from the perspective of embodied cognition.
In addition, it describes and reviews the design methodology that was adopted as an
appropriate approach towards the design of the haptic workspace prototype

Enhancing Usability and Explainability of Data Systems
The recent growth of data science expanded its reach to an ever-growing user base of nonexperts, increasing the need for usability, understandability, and explainability in these systems. Enhancing usability makes data systems accessible to people with different skills and backgrounds alike, leading to democratization of data systems. Furthermore, proper understanding of data and data-driven systems is necessary for the users to trust the function of the systems that learn from data. Finally, data systems should be transparent: when a data system behaves unexpectedly or malfunctions, the users deserve proper explanation of what caused the observed incident. Unfortunately, most existing data systems offer limited usability and support for explanations: these systems are usable only by experts with sound technical skills, and even expert users are hindered by the lack of transparency into the systems\u27 inner workings and functions. The aim of my thesis is to bridge the usability gap between nonexpert users and complex data systems, aid all sort of users, including the expert ones, in data and system understanding, and provide explanations that help reason about unexpected outcomes involving data systems. Specifically, my thesis has the following three goals: (1) enhancing usability of data systems for nonexperts, (2) enable data understanding that can assist users in a variety of tasks such as achieving trust in data-driven machine learning, gaining data understanding, and data cleaning, and (3) explaining causes of unexpected outcomes involving data and data systems.
For enhancing usability, we focus on example-driven user intent discovery. We develop systems based on example-driven interactions in two different settings: querying relational databases and personalized document summarization. Towards data understanding, we develop a new data-profiling primitive that can characterize tuples for which a machine-learned model is likely to produce untrustworthy predictions. We also develop an explanation framework to explain causes of such untrustworthy predictions. Additionally, this new data-profiling primitive enables interactive data cleaning. Finally, we develop two explanation frameworks, tailored to provide explanations in debugging data system components, including the data itself. Global freedoms and viral harms: The controversy around governance of speech and social media
In the study I address the controversy surrounding the governance of speech and social media communications. In less than 15 years, the regulation of content on social media platforms has increasingly taken over public discussions all over the globe. Social mediaâs charming narrative of âliberation technologyâ and space of free speech, has progressively switched into the frightening character of âthreat to democracyâ and space of hate speech and fake information. Whichever idea one might be leaning on, the diffusion and entanglement of social media platforms with every aspect of our society has made content regulation on social media a global public issue.
Scholars have stressed how governance of speech has been in the hand of a plurality of actors, in a plurality of settings. In the lack of a single decision-making process, governance initiatives emerge as a reaction to public shocks. In this study, I investigate how public shocks have contributed to regulation initiatives. Using theoretical concepts from Actor-Network Theory (ANT) and critical data studies and the methodological tools from controversy mapping, I have analysed narratives about free speech, technology and governance models on websites and in the UK press from 2015 until 2018. The analysis reveals public bodies have increasingly assigned public policy responsibilities to social media and their technology (algorithms and A.I.). However, they miss considerations about the social implication of this type of governance of speech, which reinforces the structure of organisation of platform economy and algorithmic management of social life. With this study, I hope to contribute to the empirical study of governance of speech as well as presenting a normative reflection on the type of governance. I also include a meta-reflection on the role of researchers, and in particular on how this methodology and theory can expose the paradoxes hidden in the black boxes of technology
