    Software scaffolds to promote regulation during scientific inquiry learning

    This research addresses issues in the design of online scaffolds for regulation within inquiry learning environments. The learning environment in this study included a physics simulation, data analysis tools, and a model editor for students to create runnable models. A regulative support tool called the Process Coordinator (PC) was designed to assist students in planning, monitoring, and evaluating their investigative efforts within this environment. In an empirical evaluation, 20 dyads received a “full” version of the PC with regulative assistance; dyads in the control group (n = 15) worked with an “empty” PC which contained minimal structures for regulative support. Results showed that both the frequency and duration of regulative tool use differed in favor of the PC+ dyads, who also wrote better lab reports. PC− dyads viewed the content helpfiles more often and produced better domain models. Implications of these differential effects are discussed and suggestions for future research are advanced

    Closing the loop: assisting archival appraisal and information retrieval in one sweep

    In this article, we examine the similarities between the concept of appraisal, a process that takes place within the archives, and the concept of relevance judgement, a process fundamental to the evaluation of information retrieval systems. More specifically, we revisit selection criteria proposed as result of archival research, and work within the digital curation communities, and, compare them to relevance criteria as discussed within information retrieval's literature based discovery. We illustrate how closely these criteria relate to each other and discuss how understanding the relationships between the these disciplines could form a basis for proposing automated selection for archival processes and initiating multi-objective learning with respect to information retrieval

    An Evaluation Instrument for the Selection of an Integrated Learning System

    The purchase and integration of integrated learning systems (ILSs) in schools is on the rise. Dissatisfied with stand-alone computers and software, educators are looking for a more sophisticated integration of computer technology throughout the entire curriculum, specifically, an ILS. Current research evaluating such systems is scarce. The purpose of this study was to develop an instrument that decision makers in school districts could use to evaluate an ILS at the pre-purchase stage. The instrument was designed expressly for school district personnel who have completed a needs assessment and have determined that an ILS will meet their needs. The instrument was developed to help them assess which ILS will meet their needs. A qualitative approach using case study methodology was used to elicit information from ILS vendors and school district decision makers which would contribute to the development of the ILS assessment instrument. Data collection was completed through interviews, observations, and document review. Data analysis was accomplished using a coding system and matrices. An instrument was developed based upon the data collection and analysis. The final phase of the design process was the preliminary and operational field testing. Preliminary field testing was accomplished by asking representatives from ten school districts to evaluate the instrument for content, format, and usefulness. Based upon their responses the instrument was revised. To complete the operational field testing, personnel from five school districts used the revised instrument to evaluate integrated learning systems during their ILS selection process and validated its content, format, and usefulness to school district decision makers wanting an effective method to assess ILSs. Results of this study suggested that (a) qualitative methodology was an appropriate way to collect and assess data for instrument design, (b) the instrument for the evaluation of ILSs was needed by school district decision makers, (c) within the limitations of small sample size, the developed instrument was proven to be valid, reliable, and useful by school district personnel, and (d) a secondary benefit of the instrument was its comprehensive coverage of ILSs, making it a useful instructional tool as well as evaluation tool

    QPLAN: Decision support for evaluating planning quality in software development projects

    Decisions about whether or not to approve a project plan for execution are critical. A decision to continue with a bad plan may lead to a failed project, whereas requesting unnecessary additional planning for an already high-quality plan may be counterproductive. However, these decisions can be influenced by psychological biases, such as the endowment effect, optimism bias and ambiguity effect, which are enhanced when uncertainty is substantial and information incomplete. As a result, a non-biased model for evaluating the quality of project planning is important to improve planning approval decisions and resource allocation. This paper introduces a novel artifact (QPLAN) that evaluates and improves planning quality, and a case study to demonstrate its effectiveness within a business environment

    Development and validation of an integrated model for evaluating e-service quality, usability and user experience (e-SQUUX) of Web-based applications in the context of a University web portal

    Text in EnglishDevelopments in Internet technology and pervasive computing over the past two and half decades have resulted in a variety of Web-based applications (WBAs) that provide products and services to online users or customers. The Internet is used not only to transfer information via the web but is increasingly used to provide electronic services including business transactions, information-delivery and social networking, as well as e-government, e-health and e-learning. For such organisations, e-service quality, usability and user experience are considered to be critical determinants of their products’ or services’ success. Many studies to model these three concepts separately have been undertaken as part of broader studies of software quality or service quality modelling. However, to the current researcher’s knowledge, none of the studies have focussed on proposing an evaluation model that integrates and combines the three of them. This research is an effort to fill that gap. The primary purpose of this mixed-methods research was to develop a conceptual integrated model for evaluating e-service quality, usability and user experience (e-SQUUX) of WBAs and then contextualise it to evaluation of a University web portal (UWP). This was undertaken using an exploratory sequential research design. During a qualitative phase, an extensive extensive systematic literature review of 264 relevant sources relating to dimensions of e-service quality, usability and user experience, was undertaken to derive an integrated conceptual e-service quality, usability and user experience (e-SQUUX) Model for evaluating WBAs. The model was then empirically refined through a sequential series of validations, thus developing various versions of the e-SQUUX Model. First, it was content validated by a set of four expert reviewers. Second, during the quantitative phase, in the context of a University web portal, a questionnaire survey was conducted that included a comprehensive pilot study with 29 partipants, prior to the main survey. The main survey data from 174 particiapants was used to determine a validated model, using Exploratory factor analysis (EFA), followed by producing a structural model, using partial least square – structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM). This version consisted of the components of the final e-SQUUX Model. Consequently, the research enriches the body of knowledge on IS and HCI by providing the e-SQUUX Model as an evaluation tool. For designers, developers and managers of UWPs, the model serves as a customisable set of evaluation criteria and also provides specific recommendations for design. In line with the Exploratory sequential design of mixed methods research, the findings of the qualitative work in this research influenced the subsequent quantitative study, since the potential Likert-scale questionnaire items were derived from the definitions and meanings of the components that emanated from the qualitative phase of the study. Consequently, this research is an exemplar for developing an integrated evaluation model for specific facets or domains, and of its application in a particular context, in this case, a University web portal.     Exploring the Path to ERP Implementation Success: In Retrospect after Rollout

    Whereas numerous studies have examined critical success factors (CSFs) for Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) implementation, little work has investigated the underlying causal links in the form of conceptual models. This study develops a casual model for ERP implementation success, using a two-stage approach. In Stage one, 27 online publications on ERP implementation in China were collected, and analyzed based on the grounded theory approach, to identify critical events and activities in the process of ERP implementation. In Stage two, a focus group study was conducted to create paths to ERP implementation success in the form of a conceptual model. The 48 critical factors identified in Stage one were mapped onto goals of ERP implementation, following the soft systems methodology (SSM). The result is a model including five high-order concepts: organizational impact, data quality, Normalization of processes, continuous improvement, and fit between business process and ERP systems

    Quality Model for Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) Web Content

    With the philosophy of providing open education to all, Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), which introduced in 2006, has been through its first decade. Despite its popularity and worldwide acceptance, MOOC faces a few criticisms about the weaknesses of its content such as lack of clarity, unstructured, poor design and lack of fundamental initial requirements. This caused by the paucity of understanding among content providers about the facet of qualities contributes to the content. There are some previous efforts to improve the quality of MOOCs, but none focused on the content from the content providers or experts' view. As a result, most of the vital internal quality factors are neglected. Besides, the operational definition for the MOOC content quality factors is still missing or not well-defined. Therefore, this research proposes a quality model for MOOC web content as a content provider’s reference to develop quality MOOC content. In order to achieve that, three basic elements were implemented which is the content’s provider perspective, MOOC content quality dimensions and MOOC content quality factors. Development of MOOC content quality dimension is based on 7C’s model and PDCA for continuity, while the determination of factors involves the process like a revision of the possible factors from literature, factors combination and categorization. This proposed hierarchical model tends to make MOOC's learning more optimistic and beneficial to the learners through the development of high-quality content
