    CLIP-CLOP: CLIP-Guided Collage and Photomontage

The unabated mystique of large-scale neural networks, such as the CLIP dual image-and-text encoder, popularized automatically generated art. Increasingly more sophisticated generators enhanced the artworks' realism and visual appearance, and creative prompt engineering enabled stylistic expression. Guided by an artist-in-the-loop ideal, we design a gradient-based generator to produce collages. It requires the human artist to curate libraries of image patches and to describe (with prompts) the whole image composition, with the option to manually adjust the patches' positions during generation, thereby allowing humans to reclaim some control of the process and achieve greater creative freedom. We explore the aesthetic potentials of high-resolution collages, and provide an open-source Google Colab as an artistic tool.Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures, published at the International Conference on Computational Creativity (ICCC) 2022 as Short Paper: Dem

    Collage Sculptures

In this thesis, I develop a program to automatically assemble collage sculptures, sets of arbitrary, non-overlapping elements arranged to fill out a recognizable target shape according to a set of procedural rules. A user provides the target and element shapes and the program procedurally places the elements in spherical holes in the target space. A signed distance function defined over the target space keeps track of the remaining holes to fill. Elements are preprocessed to determine the size of their smallest enclosing bounding sphere. They are placed in holes based on the radius of their bounding sphere. After each placement, the signed distance function is efficiently updated to account for the newly added element. Elements are placed from largest to smallest, filling the space to a predefined threshold. To demonstrate this program, I generated a number of collage sculptures. In accordance with our procedural rules, the elements in the resulting collage sculptures recognizably represent the target shape, do not overlap, are not deformed from their original shape, and display variety in size, position, and orientation

Picturing another culture: Developing language proficiency, empathy, and visual literacy through art

Integrating art (paintings, sculptures, photography, and other types of images) into second language (L2) instruction, can have a positive effect on language acquisition and developing intercultural understanding. As the instructor provides visual scaffolding, learners at all proficiency levels have the opportunity to engage more deeply with L2 course materials. Not only can students learn to interpret imagery and create their own effective combinations of visuals and texts, they also develop some familiarity with seminal artwork from the target culture. This article outlines how spiraling art through a language curriculum can aid vocabulary retention, illustrate poetic language, and raise awareness of diversity and inclusion. As a result, learners investigate and interact with the products, practices, and perspectives of the L2 culture while simultaneously developing visual analysis skills - the latter essential in an age in which both authentic and digitally manipulated imagery dominate the media and social discourse.Accepted manuscrip
