    Design of a Processor Optimized for Syntax Parsing in Video Decoders

    8International audienceHeterogeneous platforms aim to offer both performance and flexibility by providing designers processors and programmable logical units on a single platform. Processors implemented on these platforms are usually soft-cores (e.g. Altera NIOS) or ASIC (e.g. ARM Cortex-A8). However, these processors still face limitations in terms of performance compared to full hardware designs in particular for real-time video decoding applications. We present in this paper an innovative approach to improve performance using both a processor optimized for the syntax parsing (an Application-Specific Instruction-set Processor) and a FPGA. The case study has been synthesized on a Xilinx FPGA at a frequency of 100MHz and we estimate the performance that could be obtained with an ASIC

Esta tendência tem sido intensificada nos últimos anos com o movimento de sustentabilidade ambiental. A concepção correta de um sistema eletrônico de baixo consumo de energia é um problema de vários níveis de complexidade e exige estratégias sistemáticas na sua construção. Fora disso, a adoção de qualquer técnica de redução de energia sempre está vinculada com objetivos especiais e provoca alguns impactos no projeto. Apesar dos projetistas conheçam bem os impactos de forma qualitativa, as detalhes quantitativas ainda são incógnitas ou apenas mantidas dentro do 'know-how' das empresas. Neste trabalho, de acordo com resultados experimentais baseado num plataforma de SoC1 industrial, tentamos quantificar os impactos derivados do uso de técnicas de redução de consumo de energia. Nos concentramos em relacionar o fator de redução de energia de cada técnica aos impactos em termo de área, desempenho, esforço de implementação e verificação. Na ausência desse tipo de dados, que relacionam o esforço de engenharia com as metas de consumo de energia, incertezas e atrasos serão frequentes no cronograma de projeto. Esperamos que este tipo de orientações possam ajudar/guiar os arquitetos de projeto em selecionar as técnicas adequadas para reduzir o consumo de energia dentro do alcance de orçamento e cronograma de projetoAbstract: The semiconductor industry has always faced strong demands to solve the problem of heat dissipation and reduce the power consumption in electronic devices. This trend has been increased in recent years with the action of environmental sustainability. The correct conception of an electronic system for low power consumption is an issue with multiple levels of complexities and requires systematic approaches in its construction. However, the adoption of any technique for reducing the power consumption is always linked with some specific goals and causes some impacts on the project. Although the designers know well that these impacts can affect the design in a quality aspect, the quantitative details are still unkown or just be kept inside the company's know-how. In this work, according to the experimental results based on an industrial SoC2 platform, we try to quantify the impacts of the use of low power techniques. We will relate the power reduction factor of each technique to the impact in terms of area, performance, implementation and verification effort. In the absence of such data, which relates the engineering effort to the goals of power consumption, uncertainties and delays are frequent.     Multimedia applications are driving wireless network operators to add high-speed data services such as Edge (E-GPRS), WCDMA (UMTS) and WLAN (IEEE 802.11a,b,g) to the existing GSM network. This creates the need for multi-mode cellular handsets that support a wide range of communication standards, each with a different RF frequency, signal bandwidth, modulation scheme etc. This in turn generates several design challenges for the analog and digital building blocks of the physical layer. In addition to the above-mentioned protocols, mobile devices often include Bluetooth, GPS, FM-radio and TV services that can work concurrently with data and voice communication. Multi-mode, multi-band, and multi-standard mobile terminals must satisfy all these different requirements. Sharing and/or switching transceiver building blocks in these handsets is mandatory in order to extend battery life and/or reduce cost. Only adaptive circuits that are able to reconfigure themselves within the handover time can meet the design requirements of a single receiver or transmitter covering all the different standards while ensuring seamless inter-interoperability. This paper presents analog and digital base-band circuits that are able to support GSM (with Edge), WCDMA (UMTS), WLAN and Bluetooth using reconfigurable building blocks. "renderer"-Treiber fungieren als Übersetzer, die diese Darstellung zur Laufzeit in konkrete Operationen umsetzen, wobei das Datenmodell zahlreiche Optimierungen zur Reduktion der Anzahl der Schritte oder der Minimierung von Kommunikation erlaubt. Dies erlaubt ein stark vereinfachtes Programmiermodell bei gleichzeitiger Effizienzsteigerung.     Cooperating broadcast and cellular conditional access system for digital television

    This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.The lack of interoperability between Pay‐TV service providers and a horizontally integrated business transaction model have compromised the competition in the Pay‐TV market. In addition, the lack of interactivity with customers has resulted in high churn rate and improper security measures have contributed into considerable business loss. These issues are the main cause of high operational costs and subscription fees in the Pay‐TV systems. This paper presents a novel end‐to‐end system architecture for Pay‐TV systems cooperating mobile and broadcasting technologies. It provides a cost‐effective, scalable, dynamic and secure access control mechanism supporting converged services and new business opportunities in Pay‐TV systems. It enhances interactivity, security and potentially reduces customer attrition and operational cost. In this platform, service providers can effectively interact with their customers, personalise their services and adopt appropriate security measures. It breaks up the rigid relationship between a viewer and set‐top box as imposed by traditional conditional access systems, thus, a viewer can fully enjoy his entitlements via an arbitrary set‐top box. Having thoroughly considered state‐of‐the‐art technologies currently being used across the world, the thesis highlights novel use cases and presents the full design and implementation aspects of the system. The design section is enriched by providing possible security structures supported thereby. A business collaboration structure is proposed, followed by a reference model for implementing the system. Finally, the security architectures are analysed to propose the best architecture on the basis of security, complexity and set‐top box production cost criteria

    Enhancing a Neurosurgical Imaging System with a PC-based Video Processing Solution

    This work presents a PC-based prototype video processing application developed to be used with a specific neurosurgical imaging device, the OPMI® PenteroTM operating microscope, in the Department of Neurosurgery of Helsinki University Central Hospital at Töölö, Helsinki. The motivation for implementing the software was the lack of some clinically important features in the imaging system provided by the microscope. The imaging system is used as an online diagnostic aid during surgery. The microscope has two internal video cameras; one for regular white light imaging and one for near-infrared fluorescence imaging, used for indocyanine green videoangiography. The footage of the microscope’s current imaging mode is accessed via the composite auxiliary output of the device. The microscope also has an external high resolution white light video camera, accessed via a composite output of a separate video hub. The PC was chosen as the video processing platform for its unparalleled combination of prototyping and high-throughput video processing capabilities. A thorough analysis of the platform and efficient video processing methods was conducted in the thesis and the results were used in the design of the imaging station. The features found feasible during the project were incorporated into a video processing application running on a GNU/Linux distribution Ubuntu. The clinical usefulness of the implemented features was ensured beforehand by consulting the neurosurgeons using the original system. The most significant shortcomings of the original imaging system were mended in this work. The key features of the developed application include: live streaming, simultaneous streaming and recording, and playing back of upto two video streams. The playback mode provides full media player controls, with a frame-by-frame precision rewinding, in an intuitive and responsive interface. A single view and a side-by-side comparison mode are provided for the streams.
