Architectures for soft-decision decoding of non-binary codes
ganancia de codificaci'on.
(2013). Architectures for soft-decision decoding of non-binary codes [Tesis doctoral no publicada]. Universitat Politècnica de València. https://doi.org/10.4995/Thesis/10251/33753TESISPremiad
Error-correction coding for high-density magnetic recording channels.
Finally, a promising algorithm which combines RS decoding algorithm with LDPC decoding algorithm together is investigated, and a reduced-complexity modification has been proposed, which not only improves the decoding performance largely, but also guarantees a good performance in high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), in which area an error floor is experienced by LDPC codes. The soft-decision RS decoding algorithms and their performance on magnetic recording channels have been researched, and the algorithm implementation and hardware architecture issues have been discussed. Several novel variations of KV algorithm such as soft Chase algorithm, re-encoded Chase algorithm and forward recursive algorithm have been proposed. And the performance of nested codes using RS and LDPC codes as component codes have been investigated for bursty noise magnetic recording channels.Future high density magnetic recoding channels (MRCs) are subject to more noise contamination and intersymbol interference, which make the error-correction codes (ECCs) become more important. Recent research of replacement of current Reed-Solomon (RS)-coded ECC systems with low-density parity-check (LDPC)-coded ECC systems obtains a lot of research attention due to the large decoding gain for LDPC-coded systems with random noise. In this dissertation, systems aim to maintain the RS-coded system using recent proposed soft-decision RS decoding techniques are investigated and the improved performance is presented
Decoding of Decode and Forward (DF) Relay Protocol using Min-Sum Based Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) System
Decoding high complexity is a major issue to design a decode and forward (DF) relay protocol. Thus, the establishment of low complexity decoding system would beneficial to assist decode and forward relay protocol. This paper reviews existing methods for the min-sum based LDPC decoding system as the low complexity decoding system. Reference lists of chosen articles were further reviewed for associated publications. This paper introduces comprehensive system model representing and describing the methods developed for LDPC based for DF relay protocol. It is consists of a number of components: (1) encoder and modulation at the source node, (2) demodulation, decoding, encoding and modulation at relay node, and (3) demodulation and decoding at the destination node. This paper also proposes a new taxonomy for min-sum based LDPC decoding techniques, highlights some of the most important components such as data used, result performances and profiles the Variable and Check Node (VCN) operation methods that have the potential to be used in DF relay protocol. Min-sum based LDPC decoding methods have the potential to provide an objective measure the best tradeoff between low complexities decoding process and the decoding error performance, and emerge as a cost-effective solution for practical application
Stabilizer Inactivation for Message-Passing Decoding of Quantum LDPC Codes
We propose a post-processing method for message-passing (MP) decoding of CSS
quantum LDPC codes, called stabilizer-inactivation (SI). It relies on
inactivating a set of qubits, supporting a check in the dual code, and then
running the MP decoding again. This allows MP decoding to converge outside the
inactivated set of qubits, while the error on these is determined by solving a
small, constant size, linear system. Compared to the state of the art
post-processing method based on ordered statistics decoding (OSD), we show
through numerical simulations that MP-SI outperforms MP-OSD for different
quantum LDPC code constructions, different MP decoding algorithms, and
different MP scheduling strategies, while having a significantly reduced
complexity
A Soft-Aided Staircase Decoder Using Three-Level Channel Reliabilities
The soft-aided bit-marking (SABM) algorithm is based on the idea of marking
bits as highly reliable bits (HRBs), highly unreliable bits (HUBs), and
uncertain bits to improve the performance of hard-decision (HD) decoders. The
HRBs and HUBs are used to assist the HD decoders to prevent miscorrections and
to decode those originally uncorrectable cases via bit flipping (BF),
respectively. In this paper, an improved SABM algorithm (called iSABM) is
proposed for staircase codes (SCCs). Similar to the SABM, iSABM marks bits with
the help of channel reliabilities, i.e., using the absolute values of the
log-likelihood ratios. The improvements offered by iSABM include: (i) HUBs
being classified using a reliability threshold, (ii) BF randomly selecting
HUBs, and (iii) soft-aided decoding over multiple SCC blocks. The decoding
complexity of iSABM is comparable of that of SABM. This is due to the fact that
on the one hand no sorting is required (lower complexity) because of the use of
a threshold for HUBs, while on the other hand multiple SCC blocks use soft
information (higher complexity). Additional gains of up to 0.53 dB with respect
to SABM and 0.91 dB with respect to standard SCC decoding at a bit error rate
of are reported. Furthermore, it is shown that using 1-bit
reliability marking, i.e., only having HRBs and HUBs, only causes a gain
penalty of up to 0.25 dB with a significantly reduced memory requirement
Hardware Implementations of CCSDS Deep Space LDPC Codes for a Satellite Transponder
Error-correction coding is a technique that adds mathematical structure to a message, allowing corruptions to be detected and corrected when the message is received. This is especially important for deep space satellite communications, since the long distances and low signal power levels often cause message corruption. A very strong type of error-correction coding known as LDPC codes was recently standardized for use with space communications. This project implements the encoding and decoding algorithms required for a small satellite radio to be able to use these LDPC codes. Several decoder architectures are implemented and compared by their performance, speed, and complexity. Using these LDPC decoders requires knowledge of the received signal and noise levels, so an appropriate algorithm for estimating these parameters is developed and implemented. The LDPC encoder is implemented using a flexible architecture that allows the entire standardized family of ten LDPC codes to be encoded using the same hardware
