    On the Use of Architectural Products for Cost Estimation

    The Department of Defense Architecture Framework (DoDAF) provides a standard set of views that illustrate specific attributes of a system. These views give different levels of detail and purpose that allow engineers to express operational, system, technical, and architectural properties for specific purposes. The twenty six different views available can be useful and at the same time overwhelming to someone unfamiliar with the framework. An increasing number of defense contractors are using DoDAF to characterize system attributes. These same contractors are responsible for providing cost estimates for the development and implementation of systems. This paper provides the link between these two areas by relating architectural views to system representation for cost estimation. There are several benefits to this link. First, the cost estimation community can benefit from a deeper understanding of the DoDAF and its objectives to improve the field of cost estimation through the development of models that better represent system architectures. Second, DoDAF can serve as a common language between customers and contractors by improving the representation of stakeholder needs and objectives. Third, the architecting community can benefit from the identification of subjective cost drivers currently not addressed in the DoDAF products. In this spirit, this paper describes how DoDAF architecture frameworks can be used to determine functional system size for adequate estimating of systems engineering effort. This is illustrated through the use of the OilCo FastPass system defined in previous work. The utility of using the FastPass system is that it is well documented in journal articles and it is a system familiar to the general systems engineering audience

    Involvement of People in the Design of Community Building in Developing Countries

    Although public participation concept or technique to enhance and /or influence decision making is a fact of life in many governments nowadays and has been used by many industries to improve their products and increase end-users satisfaction, it is still new to the Architectural, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry. The extent to which participation should occur and the role that it plays still remains uncertain in the AEC industry. Participation has been the predominant conception for many years by many researchers. In practice, this has meant that public participation often has occurred late in the planning process. This research will focus on the involvement of people in the design process of community buildings in developing countries. During the last five decade, many community buildings were built and many of these buildings did not performed well as planned. Many of these problems in were related to design, hence the choice of architectural design of these buildings for this research. If the end-users of these buildings were involved in the planning and design stages, many of these problems would not occur. Thus, the aim of this research is to develop a conceptual framework to involve the public in the design of community buildings in developing countries. A thorough review of previous works related to the public participation in the design of community buildings has been conducted as part of this research. The review revealed most of these works in this area were done on developed countries and no research works were conducted on developing countries so far

    Grounding the curriculum: learning from live projects in architectural education

    Abstract: For more than twenty years architects in the UK have advocated the use of ‘live’ projects in architecture schools as an alternative to the more traditional model of studio learning, but the educational establishment continues to marginalize community-based approaches to learning. Recent debate, focusing on shortcomings of the studio culture in architectural education, has condemned the isolation of students from real world contexts and teaching methods that cultivate values of individualism and competition. As an alternative, many claims have been made about the potential for enhancing student learning by adopting live briefs and involving clients and users in the education of architects. Yet much of the literature remains largely speculative or descriptive and so far has neglected to investigate participatory design processes to determine their precise pedagogic value. The aims of this paper are to examine the nature of learning in student projects outside the studio environment, to locate that learning within a range of categories of learning, and to develop a conceptual structure for further exploration of alternative pedagogies in architectural education. The study is based on evaluations of two participatory design projects carried out with students at Lincoln School of Architecture in the UK. Students’ perceptions of the learning they acquired are compared with the intended learning outcomes identified by tutors at the start of the projects, and these are further contrasted with the ‘competencies’ that are typical outcomes of the traditional curriculum. The findings, which reveal significant contingent and emergent learning in the live projects, are then discussed in relation to recognized theories of learning, such as experiential learning, social constructionism, situated learning and collaborative learning. The objective is to identify an appropriate theoretical framework that may be used to draw attention to the valuable contribution of live project learning in architectural education and support arguments in favour of a more expansive and socially grounded architecture curriculum

    Architectural reflection for software evolution

    Software evolution is expensive. Lehman identifies several problems associated with it: Continuous adaptation, increasing complexity, continuing growth, and declining quality. This paper proposes that a reflective software engineering environment will address these problems by employing languages and techniques from the software architecture community. Creating a software system will involve manipulating a collection of views, including low-level code views and high-level architectural views which will be tied together using reflection. This coupling will allow the development environment to automatically identify inconsistencies between the views, and support software engineers in managing architectures during evolution. This paper proposes a research programme which will result in a software engineering environment which addresses problems of software evolution and the maintenance of consistency between architectural views of a software system
