Cross-Layer Rapid Prototyping and Synthesis of Application-Specific and Reconfigurable Many-accelerator Platforms
Technological advances of recent years laid the foundation consolidation of informatisationof society, impacting on economic, political, cultural and socialdimensions. At the peak of this realization, today, more and more everydaydevices are connected to the web, giving the term ”Internet of Things”. The futureholds the full connection and interaction of IT and communications systemsto the natural world, delimiting the transition to natural cyber systems and offeringmeta-services in the physical world, such as personalized medical care, autonomoustransportation, smart energy cities etc. . Outlining the necessities of this dynamicallyevolving market, computer engineers are required to implement computingplatforms that incorporate both increased systemic complexity and also cover awide range of meta-characteristics, such as the cost and design time, reliabilityand reuse, which are prescribed by a conflicting set of functional, technical andconstruction constraints. This thesis aims to address these design challenges bydeveloping methodologies and hardware/software co-design tools that enable therapid implementation and efficient synthesis of architectural solutions, which specifyoperating meta-features required by the modern market. Specifically, this thesispresents a) methodologies to accelerate the design flow for both reconfigurableand application-specific architectures, b) coarse-grain heterogeneous architecturaltemplates for processing and communication acceleration and c) efficient multiobjectivesynthesis techniques both at high abstraction level of programming andphysical silicon level.Regarding to the acceleration of the design flow, the proposed methodologyemploys virtual platforms in order to hide architectural details and drastically reducesimulation time. An extension of this framework introduces the systemicco-simulation using reconfigurable acceleration platforms as co-emulation intermediateplatforms. Thus, the development cycle of a hardware/software productis accelerated by moving from a vertical serial flow to a circular interactive loop. Moreover the simulation capabilities are enriched with efficient detection and correctiontechniques of design errors, as well as control methods of performancemetrics of the system according to the desired specifications, during all phasesof the system development. In orthogonal correlation with the aforementionedmethodological framework, a new architectural template is proposed, aiming atbridging the gap between design complexity and technological productivity usingspecialized hardware accelerators in heterogeneous systems-on-chip and networkon-chip platforms. It is presented a novel co-design methodology for the hardwareaccelerators and their respective programming software, including the tasks allocationto the available resources of the system/network. The introduced frameworkprovides implementation techniques for the accelerators, using either conventionalprogramming flows with hardware description language or abstract programmingmodel flows, using techniques from high-level synthesis. In any case, it is providedthe option of systemic measures optimization, such as the processing speed, the throughput, the reliability, the power consumption and the design silicon area. Finally, on addressing the increased complexity in design tools of reconfigurablesystems, there are proposed novel multi-objective optimization evolutionary algo-rithms which exploit the modern multicore processors and the coarse-grain natureof multithreaded programming environments (e.g. OpenMP) in order to reduce theplacement time, while by simultaneously grouping the applications based on theirintrinsic characteristics, the effectively explore the design space effectively. The efficiency of the proposed architectural templates, design tools and methodologyflows is evaluated in relation to the existing edge solutions with applicationsfrom typical computing domains, such as digital signal processing, multimedia andarithmetic complexity, as well as from systemic heterogeneous environments, suchas a computer vision system for autonomous robotic space navigation and manyacceleratorsystems for HPC and workstations/datacenters. The results strengthenthe belief of the author, that this thesis provides competitive expertise to addresscomplex modern - and projected future - design challenges.Οι τεχνολογικές εξελίξεις των τελευταίων ετών έθεσαν τα θεμέλια εδραίωσης της πληροφοριοποίησης της κοινωνίας, επιδρώντας σε οικονομικές,πολιτικές, πολιτιστικές και κοινωνικές διαστάσεις.
Tesis inédita de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Facultad de Informática, Departamento de Arquitectura de Computadores y Automática, leída el 15/06/2012Tablets and smartphones are some of the many intelligent devices that dominate the consumer electronics market. These systems are complex to design as they must execute multiple applications (e.g.: real-time video processing, 3D games, or wireless communications), while meeting additional design constraints, such as low energy consumption, reduced implementation size and, of course, a short time-to-market. Internally, they rely on Multi-processor Systems on Chip (MPSoCs) as their main processing cores, to meet the tight design constraints: performance, size, power consumption, etc. In a bad design, the high logic density may generate hotspots that compromise the chip reliability. This thesis introduces a FPGA-based emulation framework for easy exploration of SoC design alternatives. It provides fast and accurate estimations of performance, power, temperature, and reliability in one unified flow, to help designers tune their system architecture before going to silicon.
Virtual Runtime Application Partitions for Resource Management in Massively Parallel Architectures
This thesis presents a novel design paradigm, called Virtual Runtime Application Partitions (VRAP), to judiciously utilize the on-chip resources. As the dark silicon era approaches, where the power considerations will allow only a fraction chip to be powered on, judicious resource management will become a key consideration in future designs. Most of the works on resource management treat only the physical components (i.e. computation, communication, and memory blocks) as resources and manipulate the component to application mapping to optimize various parameters (e.g. energy efficiency). To further enhance the optimization potential, in addition to the physical resources we propose to manipulate abstract resources (i.e. voltage/frequency operating point, the fault-tolerance strength, the degree of parallelism, and the configuration architecture). The proposed framework (i.e. VRAP) encapsulates methods, algorithms, and hardware blocks to provide each application with the abstract resources tailored to its needs. To test the efficacy of this concept, we have developed three distinct self adaptive environments: (i) Private Operating Environment (POE), (ii) Private Reliability Environment (PRE), and (iii) Private Configuration Environment (PCE) that collectively ensure that each application meets its deadlines using minimal platform resources. In this work several novel architectural enhancements, algorithms and policies are presented to realize the virtual runtime application partitions efficiently. Considering the future design trends, we have chosen Coarse Grained Reconfigurable Architectures (CGRAs) and Network on Chips (NoCs) to test the feasibility of our approach. Specifically, we have chosen Dynamically Reconfigurable Resource Array (DRRA) and McNoC as the representative CGRA and NoC platforms. The proposed techniques are compared and evaluated using a variety of quantitative experiments. Synthesis and simulation results demonstrate VRAP significantly enhances the energy and power efficiency compared to state of the art.Siirretty Doriast
On the automated compilation of UML notation to a VLIW chip multiprocessor
With the availability of more and more cores within architectures the process of extracting implicit and explicit parallelism in applications to fully utilise these cores is becoming complex. Implicit parallelism extraction is performed through the inclusion of intelligent software and hardware sections of tool chains although these reach their theoretical limit rather quickly.
Due to this the concept of a method of allowing explicit parallelism to be performed as fast a possible has been investigated. This method enables application developers to perform creation and synchronisation of parallel sections of an application at a finer-grained level than previously possible, resulting in smaller sections of code being executed in parallel while still reducing overall execution time.
Alongside explicit parallelism, a concept of high level design of applications destined for multicore systems was also investigated. As systems are getting larger it is becoming more difficult to design and track the full life-cycle of development. One method used to ease this process is to use a graphical design process to visualise the high level designs of such systems.
One drawback in graphical design is the explicit nature in which systems are required to be generated, this was investigated, and using concepts already in use in text based programming languages, the generation of platform-independent models which are able to be specialised to multiple hardware architectures was developed.
The explicit parallelism was performed using hardware elements to perform thread management, this resulted in speed ups of over 13 times when compared to threading libraries executed in software on commercially available processors. This allowed applications with large data dependent sections to be parallelised in small sections within the code resulting in a decrease of overall execution time.
The modelling concepts resulted in the saving of between 40-50% of the time and effort required to generate platform-specific models while only incurring an overhead of up to 15% the execution cycles of these models designed for specific architectures

The contribution of this work builds on top of the established virtual prototype platforms to improve both SoC design quality and productivity. Initially, an automatic system-level power estimation framework was developed to address the critical issue of early power estimation in SoC design. The estimation framework models the static and dynamic power consumption of the hardware components. These models are created from the normalized values of the basic design components of SoC, obtained through one-time power simulation of RTL hardware models. The framework allows dynamic technology node reconfiguration for power estimation models. Its instantaneous power reporting aids the detection of possible hotspot early into the design process.
Adding this additional data in conjunction with a steadily growing design space of complex heterogeneous SoC, finding the right parameter configuration is a challenging and laborious task for a system-level designer. This work addresses this bottleneck by optimizing the design space exploration (DSE) process for MPSoC design. An automatic DSE framework for virtual platforms (VPs) was developed which is flexible and allows the selection optimal parameter configuration without pre-existing knowledge. To reduce exploration time, the framework is equipped with several multi-objective optimization techniques based on simulated annealing and a genetic algorithm.
Lastly, to aid HW/SW partitioning at system-level, a flexible and automated workflow (SW2TLM) is presented. It allows the designer to explore various possible partitioning scenarios without going into depth of the hardware architecture complexity and software integration. The framework generates system-level hardware accelerators from corresponding functionality encoded in the software code and integrates them into the VP. Power consumption and time speedups of acceleration is reported to the designer, which further increases the quality and productivity of the development process towards the final architecture.
The presented tools are evaluated using a state-of-the-art VP for a range of single and multi-core applications. Viewing the energy delay product, a reduction in exploration time was recorded at approximately 62% (worst case), maintaining optimal parameter accuracy of 90% compared to previous techniques. While the SW2TLM further increases the exploration versatility by combining modern high-level synthesis with system-level architectural exploration.
Runtime Monitoring for Dependable Hardware Design
Enhancing Real-time Embedded Image Processing Robustness on Reconfigurable Devices for Critical Applications
Nowadays, image processing is increasingly used in several application fields, such as biomedical, aerospace, or automotive. Within these fields, image processing is used to serve both non-critical and critical tasks. As example, in automotive, cameras are becoming key sensors in increasing car safety, driving assistance and driving comfort. They have been employed for infotainment (non-critical), as well as for some driver assistance tasks (critical), such as Forward Collision Avoidance, Intelligent Speed Control, or Pedestrian Detection.
The complexity of these algorithms brings a challenge in real-time image processing systems, requiring high computing capacity, usually not available in processors for embedded systems. Hardware acceleration is therefore crucial, and devices such as Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) best fit the growing demand of computational capabilities. These devices can assist embedded processors by significantly speeding-up computationally intensive software algorithms.
Moreover, critical applications introduce strict requirements not only from the real-time constraints, but also from the device reliability and algorithm robustness points of view. Technology scaling is highlighting reliability problems related to aging phenomena, and to the increasing sensitivity of digital devices to external radiation events that can cause transient or even permanent faults. These faults can lead to wrong information processed or, in the worst case, to a dangerous system failure. In this context, the reconfigurable nature of FPGA devices can be exploited to increase the system reliability and robustness by leveraging Dynamic Partial Reconfiguration features.
The research work presented in this thesis focuses on the development of techniques for implementing efficient and robust real-time embedded image processing hardware accelerators and systems for mission-critical applications. Three main challenges have been faced and will be discussed, along with proposed solutions, throughout the thesis: (i) achieving real-time performances, (ii) enhancing algorithm robustness, and (iii) increasing overall system's dependability.
In order to ensure real-time performances, efficient FPGA-based hardware accelerators implementing selected image processing algorithms have been developed. Functionalities offered by the target technology, and algorithm's characteristics have been constantly taken into account while designing such accelerators, in order to efficiently tailor algorithm's operations to available hardware resources.
On the other hand, the key idea for increasing image processing algorithms' robustness is to introduce self-adaptivity features at algorithm level, in order to maintain constant, or improve, the quality of results for a wide range of input conditions, that are not always fully predictable at design-time (e.g., noise level variations). This has been accomplished by measuring at run-time some characteristics of the input images, and then tuning the algorithm parameters based on such estimations. Dynamic reconfiguration features of modern reconfigurable FPGA have been extensively exploited in order to integrate run-time adaptivity into the designed hardware accelerators.
Tools and methodologies have been also developed in order to increase the overall system dependability during reconfiguration processes, thus providing safe run-time adaptation mechanisms. In addition, taking into account the target technology and the environments in which the developed hardware accelerators and systems may be employed, dependability issues have been analyzed, leading to the development of a platform for quickly assessing the reliability and characterizing the behavior of hardware accelerators implemented on reconfigurable FPGAs when they are affected by such faults
Observation mechanisms for in-field software-based self-test
When electronic systems are used in safety critical applications, as in the space,
avionic, automotive or biomedical areas, it is required to maintain a very low
probability of failures due to faults of any kind. Standards and regulations play
a significant role, forcing companies to devise and adopt solutions able to achieve
predefined targets in terms of dependability. Different techniques can be used to
reduce fault occurrence or to minimize the probability that those faults produce
critical failures (e.g., by introducing redundancy).
Unfortunately, most of these techniques have a severe impact on the cost of
the resulting product and, in some cases, the probability of failures is too large
anyway. Hence, a solution commonly used in several scenarios lies on periodically
performing a test able to detect the occurrence of any fault before it produces
a failure (in-field test). This solution is normally based on forcing the processor
inside the Device Under Test to execute a properly written test program, which is
able to activate possible faults and to make their effects visible in some observable
locations. This approach is also called Software-Based Self-Test, or SBST.
If compared with testing in an end of manufacturing scenario, in-field testing
has strong limitations in terms of access to the system inputs and outputs
because Design for Testability structures and testing equipment are usually not
available. As a consequence there are reduced possibilities to activate the faults
and to observe their effects.
This reduced observability particularly affects the ability to detect performance
faults, i.e. faults that modify the timing but not the final value of computations.
This kind of faults are hard to detect by only observing the final content of
predefined memory locations, that is the usual test result observation method used
in-field.
Initially, the present work was focused on fault tolerance techniques against
transient faults induced by ionizing radiation, the so called Single Event Upsets
(SEUs). The main contribution of this early stage of the thesis lies in the experimental
validation of the feasibility of achieving a safe system by using an
architecture that combines task-level redundancy with already available IP cores,
thus minimizing the development time. Task execution is replicated and Memory
Protection is used to guarantee that any SEU may affect one and only one
of the replicas. A proof of concept implementation was developed and validated
using fault injection. Results outline the effectiveness of the architecture, and the
overhead analysis shows that the proposed architecture is effective in reducing the
resource occupation with respect to N-modular redundancy, at an affordable cost
in terms of application execution time.
The main part of the thesis is focused on in-field software-based self-test of
permanent faults. A set of observation methods exploiting existing or ad-hoc
hardware is proposed, aimed at obtaining a better coverage, in particular of performance
faults. An extensive quantitative evaluation of the proposed methods
is presented, including a comparison with the observation methods traditionally
used in end of manufacturing and in-field testing.
Results show that the proposed methods are a good complement to the traditionally
used final memory content observation. Moreover, they show that an
adequate combination of these complementary methods allows for achieving nearly
the same fault coverage achieved when continuously observing all the processor
outputs, which is an observation method commonly used for production test but
usually not available in-field.
A very interesting by-product of what is described above is a detailed description
of how to compute the fault coverage achieved by functional in-field tests
using a conventional fault simulator, a tool that is usually applied in an end of
manufacturing testing scenario.
Finally, another relevant result in the testing area is a method to detect permanent
faults inside the cache coherence logic integrated in each cache controller
of a multi-core system, based on the concurrent execution of a test program by
the different cores in a coordinated manner. By construction, the method achieves
full fault coverage of the static faults in the addressed logic.
