Arabic text recognition is one of the most important fields of optical character recognition for Arabic people. Arabic text recognition consider of converting an image of Arabic text into editable format such as doc or pdf. One of its branches is holy Quran text recognition. The key aim of this research is to develop Quran Arabic Recognition System. The study recognises the Arabic text (character) individually . In addition, this study will use  Back propagation neural networks for character recognitions. Because of the nature of holy quran the rate of recognition must by extremely high. Keywords: text recognition, Arabic text recognition, quran text recognition neural networks, DOI: 10.7176/IKM/13-3-05 Publication date:May 31st 202

Handwritten Arabic character recognition: which feature extraction method?

    Get PDF
Recognition of Arabic handwriting characters is a difficult task due to similar appearance of some different characters. However, the selection of the method for feature extraction remains the most important step for achieving high recognition accuracy. The purpose of this paper is to compare the effectiveness of Discrete Cosine Transform and Discrete Wavelet transform to capture discriminative features of Arabic handwritten characters. A new database containing 5600 characters covering all shapes of Arabic handwriting characters has also developed for the purpose of the analysis. The coefficients of both techniques have been used for classification based on a Artificial Neural Network implementation. The results have been analysed and the finding have demonstrated that a Discrete Cosine Transform based feature extraction yields a superior recognition than its counterpart

Handwritten Character Recognition of South Indian Scripts: A Review

Handwritten character recognition is always a frontier area of research in the field of pattern recognition and image processing and there is a large demand for OCR on hand written documents. Even though, sufficient studies have performed in foreign scripts like Chinese, Japanese and Arabic characters, only a very few work can be traced for handwritten character recognition of Indian scripts especially for the South Indian scripts. This paper provides an overview of offline handwritten character recognition in South Indian Scripts, namely Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada and Telungu.Comment: Paper presented on the "National Conference on Indian Language Computing", Kochi, February 19-20, 2011. 6 pages, 5 figure
