    Preemptive scheduling on uniform parallel machines with controllable job processing times

    In this paper, we provide a unified approach to solving preemptive scheduling problems with uniform parallel machines and controllable processing times. We demonstrate that a single criterion problem of minimizing total compression cost subject to the constraint that all due dates should be met can be formulated in terms of maximizing a linear function over a generalized polymatroid. This justifies applicability of the greedy approach and allows us to develop fast algorithms for solving the problem with arbitrary release and due dates as well as its special case with zero release dates and a common due date. For the bicriteria counterpart of the latter problem we develop an efficient algorithm that constructs the trade-off curve for minimizing the compression cost and the makespan

    We address a version of the Half-Product Problem and its restricted variant with a linear knapsack constraint. For these minimization problems of Boolean programming, we focus on the development of fully polynomial-time approximation schemes with running times that depend quadratically on the number of variables. Applications to various single machine scheduling problems are reported: minimizing the total weighted flow time with controllable processing times, minimizing the makespan with controllable release dates, minimizing the total weighted flow time for two models of scheduling with rejection

    In a scheduling problem with controllable processing times the job processing time can be compressed through incurring an additional cost. We consider the identical parallel machines max flow time minimization problem with controllable processing times. We address the preemptive and non-preemptive version of the problem. For the preemptive case, a linear programming formulation is presented which solves the problem optimally in polynomial time. For the non-preemptive problem it is shown that the First In First Out (FIFO) heuristic has a tight worst-case performance of 3−2/m, when jobs processing times and costs are set as in some optimal preemptive schedul

    Machine Scheduling with Resource Dependent Processing Times

    We consider several parallel machine scheduling settings with the objective to minimize the schedule makespan. The most general of these settings is unrelated parallel machine scheduling. We assume that, in addition to its machine dependence, the processing time of any job is dependent on the usage of a scarce renewable resource. A given amount of that resource, e.g. workers, can be distributed over the jobs in process at any time, and the more of that resource is allocated to a job, the smaller is its processing time. This model generalizes classical machine scheduling problems, adding a time-resource tradeoff. It is also a natural variant of a generalized assignment problem studied previously by Shmoys and Tardos. On the basis of integer programming formulations for relaxations of the respective problems, we use LP rounding techniques to allocate resources to jobs, and to assign jobs to machines. Combined with Graham''s list scheduling, we thus prove the existence of constant factor approximation algorithms. Our performance guarantee is 6.83 for the most general case of unrelated parallel machine scheduling. We improve this bound for two special cases, namely to 5.83 whenever the jobs are assigned to machines beforehand, and to (5+e), e>0, whenever the processing times do not depend on the machine.     A new bounding mechanism for the CNC machine scheduling problems with controllable processing times

The proposed bounding scheme is used to find a set of discrete efficient points on the efficient frontier for a bi-criteria scheduling problem on a single CNC machine. We have two objectives; minimizing the manufacturing cost (comprised of machining and tooling costs) and minimizing makespan. The technological restrictions of the CNC machine along with the job specific parameters affect the machining conditions; such as cutting speed and feed rate, which in turn specify the processing times and tool lives. Since it is well known that scheduling problems are extremely sensitive to processing time data, system resources can be utilized much more efficiently by selecting processing times appropriately. 2004 Elsevier B.V.     Scheduling with tool changes to minimize total completion time under controllable machining conditions

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.Scheduling under controllable machining conditions has been studied for some time. Scheduling with tool changes, particularly due to tool wear, has just begun to receive attention. Though machining conditions impact tool wear and induce tool change, the two issues have not been considered together.We address for the first time the problem of scheduling a computer numerically controlled (CNC) machine subject to tool changes and controllable machining conditions; our objective is to minimize the total completion time of a given set of jobs. We establish an important result that helps us identify feasible settings of machining parameters such as feed rate and cutting speed. However, the problem at hand remains intractable, even when a single setting is used. In the general case, we are able to solve the problem exactly for up to 30 jobs using a mixed integer linear programming formulation. For larger problems, we turn to approximate solution via heuristics. We examine a number of different schemes. The best of these schemes are used in a problem space genetic algorithm; this produces quality solutions in a time-efficient manner, as is evidenced from an extensive computational study conducted by us. 2005 Elsevier Ltd.
