Numerical approximation of the Euler-Poisson-Boltzmann model in the quasineutral limit
This paper analyzes various schemes for the Euler-Poisson-Boltzmann (EPB)
model of plasma physics. This model consists of the pressureless gas dynamics
equations coupled with the Poisson equation and where the Boltzmann relation
relates the potential to the electron density. If the quasi-neutral assumption
is made, the Poisson equation is replaced by the constraint of zero local
charge and the model reduces to the Isothermal Compressible Euler (ICE) model.
We compare a numerical strategy based on the EPB model to a strategy using a
reformulation (called REPB formulation). The REPB scheme captures the
quasi-neutral limit more accurately
The Euler-Poincaré Equations in Geophysical Fluid Dynamics
Recent theoretical work has developed the Hamilton's-principle analog of Lie-Poisson Hamiltonian systems defined on semidirect products. The main theoretical results are twofold:
1. Euler-Poincaré equations (the Lagrangian analog of Lie-Poisson Hamiltonian equations) are derived for a parameter dependent Lagrangian from a general variational principle of Lagrange d'Alembert type in which variations are constrained;
2. an abstract Kelvin-Noether theorem is derived for such systems.
By imposing suitable constraints on the variations and by using invariance properties of the Lagrangian, as one does for the Euler equations for the rigid body and ideal fluids, we cast several standard Eulerian models of geophysical fluid dynamics (GFD) at various levels of approximation into Euler-Poincaré form and discuss their corresponding Kelvin-Noether theorems and potential
vorticity conservation laws. The various levels of GFD approximation are related by substituting a sequence of velocity decompositions and asymptotic expansions into Hamilton's principle for the Euler equations of a rotating
stratified ideal incompressible fluid. We emphasize that the shared properties of this sequence of approximate ideal GFD models follow directly from their Euler-Poincaré formulations. New modifications of the Euler-Boussinesq
equations and primitive equations are also proposed in which nonlinear dispersion adaptively filters high wavenumbers and thereby enhances stability and regularity without compromising either low wavenumber behavior or geophysical balances
Asymptotic-Preserving Schemes for Fluid Models of Plasmas
International audienceThese notes summarize a series of works related to the numerical approximation of plasma fluid problems. We construct so-called 'Asymptotic-Preserving' schemes which are valid for a large range of values (from very small to order unity) of the dimensionless parameters that appear in plasma fluid models. Specifically, we are interested in two parameters, the scaled Debye length which quantifies how close to quasi-neutrality the plasma is, and the scaled cyclotron period, which is inversely proportional to the magnetic field strength. We will largely focus on the ideas, in order to enable the reader to apply these concepts to other situations
Global Existence and Asymptotic Behaviors For Some Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations.
We study global existence and asymptotic behavior of the solutions for two-fluid compressible isentropic Euler-Maxwell equations by the Fourier transform and energy method. We discuss the case when the pressure for two fluids is not identical and we also add the friction between two fluids. In addition, we discuss the rates of decay of norms for a linear system. Moreover, we use the result for estimates to prove the decay rates for the nonlinear systems. In addition, we prove existence of heteroclinic orbits for the nonlinear Vlasov and the one-dimensional Vlasov-Poisson systems. In the nonlinear Vlasov case with sufficiently regular and periodic potential we show that there is at least one orbit emanating from a maximum point of the potential and at least one terminating at it. The Vlasov-Poisson case is more delicate due to the singularity of the potential, and our existence result is limited to one spatial dimension and to weak solutions in the space of probability measures on the torus endowed with the periodic Wasserstein distance
Multidimensional Conservation Laws: Overview, Problems, and Perspective
Some of recent important developments are overviewed, several longstanding
open problems are discussed, and a perspective is presented for the
mathematical theory of multidimensional conservation laws. Some basic features
and phenomena of multidimensional hyperbolic conservation laws are revealed,
and some samples of multidimensional systems/models and related important
problems are presented and analyzed with emphasis on the prototypes that have
been solved or may be expected to be solved rigorously at least for some cases.
In particular, multidimensional steady supersonic problems and transonic
problems, shock reflection-diffraction problems, and related effective
nonlinear approaches are analyzed. A theory of divergence-measure vector fields
and related analytical frameworks for the analysis of entropy solutions are
discussed.Comment: 43 pages, 3 figure
