Single machine scheduling problems with uncertain parameters and the OWA criterion
In this paper a class of single machine scheduling problems is discussed. It
is assumed that job parameters, such as processing times, due dates, or weights
are uncertain and their values are specified in the form of a discrete scenario
set. The Ordered Weighted Averaging (OWA) aggregation operator is used to
choose an optimal schedule. The OWA operator generalizes traditional criteria
in decision making under uncertainty, such as the maximum, average, median or
Hurwicz criterion. It also allows us to extend the robust approach to
scheduling by taking into account various attitudes of decision makers towards
the risk. In this paper a general framework for solving single machine
scheduling problems with the OWA criterion is proposed and some positive and
negative computational results for two basic single machine scheduling problems
are provided
Single-machine scheduling with stepwise tardiness costs and release times
We study a scheduling problem that belongs to the yard operations component of the railroad planning problems, namely the hump sequencing problem. The scheduling problem is characterized as a single-machine problem with stepwise tardiness cost objectives. This is a new scheduling criterion which is also relevant in the context of traditional machine scheduling problems. We produce complexity results that characterize some cases of the problem as pseudo-polynomially solvable. For the difficult-to-solve cases of the problem, we develop mathematical programming formulations, and propose heuristic algorithms. We test the formulations and heuristic algorithms on randomly generated single-machine scheduling problems and real-life datasets for the hump sequencing problem. Our experiments show promising results for both sets of problems
A linear programming-based method for job shop scheduling
We present a decomposition heuristic for a large class of job shop scheduling problems. This heuristic utilizes information from the linear programming formulation of the associated optimal timing problem to solve subproblems, can be used for any objective function whose associated optimal timing problem can be expressed as a linear program (LP), and is particularly effective for objectives that include a component that is a function of individual operation
completion times. Using the proposed heuristic framework, we address job shop scheduling problems with a variety of objectives where intermediate holding costs need to be explicitly considered. In computational testing, we demonstrate the performance of our proposed solution approach

Multi-objective sequence dependent setup times permutation flowshop: A new algorithm and a comprehensive study
The permutation flowshop scheduling problem has been thoroughly studied in recent decades, both from single objective as well as from multi-objective perspectives. To the best of our knowledge, little has been done regarding the multi-objective flowshop with Pareto approach when sequence dependent setup times are considered. As setup times and multi-criteria problems are important in industry, we must focus on this area. We propose a simple, yet powerful algorithm for the sequence dependent setup times flowshop problem with several criteria. The presented method is referred to as Restarted Iterated Pareto Greedy or RIPG and is compared against the best performing approaches from the relevant literature. Comprehensive computational and statistical analyses are carried out in order to demonstrate that the proposed RIPG method clearly outperforms all other algorithms and, as a consequence, it is a state-of- art method for this important and practical scheduling problemThe authors thank the anonymous referees for their careful and detailed comments which have helped improve this manuscript considerably. New complexity results for parallel identical machine scheduling problems with preemption, release dates and regular criteria
In this paper, we are interested in parallel identical machine scheduling
problems with preemption and release dates in case of a regular criterion to be
minimized. We show that solutions having a permutation flow shop structure are
dominant if there exists an optimal solution with completion times scheduled in
the same order as the release dates, or if there is no release date. We also
prove that, for a subclass of these problems, the completion times of all jobs
can be ordered in an optimal solution. Using these two results, we provide new
results on polynomially solvable problems and hence refine the boundary between
P and NP for these problems
