    Node-Weighted Prize Collecting Steiner Tree and Applications

    The Steiner Tree problem has appeared in the Karp's list of the first 21 NP-hard problems and is well known as one of the most fundamental problems in Network Design area. We study the Node-Weighted version of the Prize Collecting Steiner Tree problem. In this problem, we are given a simple graph with a cost and penalty value associated with each node. Our goal is to find a subtree T of the graph minimizing the cost of the nodes in T plus penalty of the nodes not in T. By a reduction from set cover problem it can be easily shown that the problem cannot be approximated in polynomial time within factor of (1-o(1))ln n unless NP has quasi-polynomial time algorithms, where n is the number of vertices of the graph. Moss and Rabani claimed an O(log n)-approximation algorithm for the problem using a Primal-Dual approach in their STOC'01 paper \cite{moss2001}. We show that their algorithm is incorrect by providing a counter example in which there is an O(n) gap between the dual solution constructed by their algorithm and the optimal solution. Further, evidence is given that their algorithm probably does not have a simple fix. We propose a new algorithm which is more involved and introduces novel ideas in primal dual approach for network design problems. Also, our algorithm is a Lagrangian Multiplier Preserving algorithm and we show how this property can be utilized to design an O(log n)-approximation algorithm for the Node-Weighted Quota Steiner Tree problem using the Lagrangian Relaxation method. We also show an application of the Node Weighted Quota Steiner Tree problem in designing algorithm with better approximation factor for Technology Diffusion problem, a problem proposed by Goldberg and Liu in \cite{goldberg2012} (SODA 2013). In Technology Diffusion, we are given a graph G and a threshold θ(v) associated with each vertex v and we are seeking a set of initial nodes called the seed set. Technology Diffusion is a dynamic process defined over time in which each vertex is either active or inactive. The vertices in the seed set are initially activated and each other vertex v gets activated whenever there are at least θ(v) active nodes connected to v through other active nodes. The Technology Diffusion problem asks to find the minimum seed set activating all nodes. Goldberg and Liu gave an O(rllog n)-approximation algorithm for the problem where r and l are the diameter of G and the number of distinct threshold values, respectively. We improve the approximation factor to O(min{r,l}log n) by establishing a close connection between the problem and the Node Weighted Quota Steiner Tree problem

    The Price of Information in Combinatorial Optimization

    Consider a network design application where we wish to lay down a minimum-cost spanning tree in a given graph; however, we only have stochastic information about the edge costs. To learn the precise cost of any edge, we have to conduct a study that incurs a price. Our goal is to find a spanning tree while minimizing the disutility, which is the sum of the tree cost and the total price that we spend on the studies. In a different application, each edge gives a stochastic reward value. Our goal is to find a spanning tree while maximizing the utility, which is the tree reward minus the prices that we pay. Situations such as the above two often arise in practice where we wish to find a good solution to an optimization problem, but we start with only some partial knowledge about the parameters of the problem. The missing information can be found only after paying a probing price, which we call the price of information. What strategy should we adopt to optimize our expected utility/disutility? A classical example of the above setting is Weitzman's "Pandora's box" problem where we are given probability distributions on values of nn independent random variables. The goal is to choose a single variable with a large value, but we can find the actual outcomes only after paying a price. Our work is a generalization of this model to other combinatorial optimization problems such as matching, set cover, facility location, and prize-collecting Steiner tree. We give a technique that reduces such problems to their non-price counterparts, and use it to design exact/approximation algorithms to optimize our utility/disutility. Our techniques extend to situations where there are additional constraints on what parameters can be probed or when we can simultaneously probe a subset of the parameters.Comment: SODA 201

    Approximation Algorithm for Unrooted Prize-Collecting Forest with Multiple Components and Its Application on Prize-Collecting Sweep Coverage

    In this paper, we introduce a polynomial-time 2-approximation algorithm for the Unrooted Prize-Collecting Forest with KK Components (URPCFK_K) problem. URPCFK_K aims to find a forest with exactly KK connected components while minimizing both the forest's weight and the penalties incurred by unspanned vertices. Unlike the rooted version RPCFK_K, where a 2-approximation algorithm exists, solving the unrooted version by guessing roots leads to exponential time complexity for non-constant KK. To address this challenge, we propose a rootless growing and rootless pruning algorithm. We also apply this algorithm to improve the approximation ratio for the Prize-Collecting Min-Sensor Sweep Cover problem (PCMinSSC) from 8 to 5.     A PTAS for planar group Steiner tree via spanner bootstrapping and prize collecting

    We present the first polynomial-time approximation scheme (PTAS), i.e., (1 + ϵ)-approximation algorithm for any constant ϵ > 0, for the planar group Steiner tree problem (in which each group lies on a boundary of a face). This result improves on the best previous approximation factor of O(logn(loglogn)O(1)). We achieve this result via a novel and powerful technique called spanner bootstrapping, which allows one to bootstrap from a superconstant approximation factor (even superpolynomial in the input size) all the way down to a PTAS. This is in contrast with the popular existing approach for planar PTASs of constructing lightweight spanners in one iteration, which notably requires a constant-factor approximate solution to start from. Spanner bootstrapping removes one of the main barriers for designing PTASs for problems which have no known constant-factor approximation (even on planar graphs), and thus can be used to obtain PTASs for several difficult-to-approximate problems. Our second major contribution required for the planar group Steiner tree PTAS is a spanner construction, which reduces the graph to have total weight within a factor of the optimal solution while approximately preserving the optimal solution. This is particularly challenging because group Steiner tree requires deciding which terminal in each group to connect by the tree, making it much harder than recent previous approaches to construct spanners for planar TSP by Klein [SIAM J. Computing 2008], subset TSP by Klein [STOC 2006], Steiner tree by Borradaile, Klein, and Mathieu [ACM Trans. Algorithms 2009], and Steiner forest by Bateni, Hajiaghayi, and Marx [J. ACM 2011] (and its improvement to an efficient PTAS by Eisenstat, Klein, and Mathieu [SODA 2012]. The main conceptual contribution here is realizing that selecting which terminals may be relevant is essentially a complicated prize-collecting process: we have to carefully weigh the cost and benefits of reaching or avoiding certain terminals in the spanner. Via a sequence of involved prize-collecting procedures, we can construct a spanner that reaches a set of terminals that is sufficient for an almost-optimal solution. Our PTAS for planar group Steiner tree implies the first PTAS for geometric Euclidean group Steiner tree with obstacles, as well as a (2 + ϵ)-approximation algorithm for group TSP with obstacles, improving over the best previous constant-factor approximation algorithms. By contrast, we show that planar group Steiner forest, a slight generalization of planar group Steiner tree, is APX-hard on planar graphs of treewidth 3, even if the groups are pairwise disjoint and every group is a vertex or an edge

    Prize-Collecting Steiner Networks via Iterative Rounding

    Abstract. In this paper we design an iterative rounding approach for the classic prize-collecting Steiner forest problem and more generally the prize-collecting survivable Steiner network design problem. We show as an structural result that in each iteration of our algorithm there is an LP variable in a basic feasible solution which is at least one-third-integral resulting a 3-approximation algorithm for this problem. In addition, we show this factor 3 in our structural result is indeed tight for prize-collecting Steiner forest and thus prize-collecting survivable Steiner network design. This especially answers negatively the previous belief that one might be able to obtain an approximation factor better than 3 for these problems using a natural iterative rounding approach. Our structural result is extending the celebrated iterative rounding approach of Jain [13] by using several new ideas some from more complicated linear algebra. The approach of this paper can be also applied to get a constant factor (bicriteria-)approximation algorithm for degree constrained prize-collecting network design problems. We emphasize that though in theory we can prove existence of only an LP variable of at least one-third-integral, in practice very often in each iteration there exists a variable of integral or almost integral which results in a much better approximation factor than provable factor 3 in this paper (see patent application [11]). This is indeed the advantage of our algorithm in this paper over previous approximation algorithms for prize-collecting Steiner forest with the same or slightly better provable approximation factors.
