Syntactic Separation of Subset Satisfiability Problems
Variants of the Exponential Time Hypothesis (ETH) have been used to derive lower bounds on the time complexity for certain problems, so that the hardness results match long-standing algorithmic results. In this paper, we consider a syntactically defined class of problems, and give conditions for when problems in this class require strongly exponential time to approximate to within a factor of (1-epsilon) for some constant epsilon > 0, assuming the Gap Exponential Time Hypothesis (Gap-ETH), versus when they admit a PTAS. Our class includes a rich set of problems from additive combinatorics, computational geometry, and graph theory. Our hardness results also match the best known algorithmic results for these problems
Curvature and Optimal Algorithms for Learning and Minimizing Submodular Functions
We investigate three related and important problems connected to machine
learning: approximating a submodular function everywhere, learning a submodular
function (in a PAC-like setting [53]), and constrained minimization of
submodular functions. We show that the complexity of all three problems depends
on the 'curvature' of the submodular function, and provide lower and upper
bounds that refine and improve previous results [3, 16, 18, 52]. Our proof
techniques are fairly generic. We either use a black-box transformation of the
function (for approximation and learning), or a transformation of algorithms to
use an appropriate surrogate function (for minimization). Curiously, curvature
has been known to influence approximations for submodular maximization [7, 55],
but its effect on minimization, approximation and learning has hitherto been
open. We complete this picture, and also support our theoretical claims by

Sum-of-squares proofs and the quest toward optimal algorithms
In order to obtain the best-known guarantees, algorithms are traditionally
tailored to the particular problem we want to solve. Two recent developments,
the Unique Games Conjecture (UGC) and the Sum-of-Squares (SOS) method,
surprisingly suggest that this tailoring is not necessary and that a single
efficient algorithm could achieve best possible guarantees for a wide range of
different problems.
The Unique Games Conjecture (UGC) is a tantalizing conjecture in
computational complexity, which, if true, will shed light on the complexity of
a great many problems. In particular this conjecture predicts that a single
concrete algorithm provides optimal guarantees among all efficient algorithms
for a large class of computational problems.
The Sum-of-Squares (SOS) method is a general approach for solving systems of
polynomial constraints. This approach is studied in several scientific
disciplines, including real algebraic geometry, proof complexity, control
theory, and mathematical programming, and has found applications in fields as
diverse as quantum information theory, formal verification, game theory and
many others.
We survey some connections that were recently uncovered between the Unique
Games Conjecture and the Sum-of-Squares method. In particular, we discuss new
tools to rigorously bound the running time of the SOS method for obtaining
approximate solutions to hard optimization problems, and how these tools give
the potential for the sum-of-squares method to provide new guarantees for many
