    The Densest k-Subhypergraph Problem

    The Densest kk-Subgraph (DkkS) problem, and its corresponding minimization problem Smallest pp-Edge Subgraph (SppES), have come to play a central role in approximation algorithms. This is due both to their practical importance, and their usefulness as a tool for solving and establishing approximation bounds for other problems. These two problems are not well understood, and it is widely believed that they do not an admit a subpolynomial approximation ratio (although the best known hardness results do not rule this out). In this paper we generalize both DkkS and SppES from graphs to hypergraphs. We consider the Densest kk-Subhypergraph problem (given a hypergraph (V,E)(V, E), find a subset WVW\subseteq V of kk vertices so as to maximize the number of hyperedges contained in WW) and define the Minimum pp-Union problem (given a hypergraph, choose pp of the hyperedges so as to minimize the number of vertices in their union). We focus in particular on the case where all hyperedges have size 3, as this is the simplest non-graph setting. For this case we provide an O(n4(43)/13+ϵ)O(n0.697831+ϵ)O(n^{4(4-\sqrt{3})/13 + \epsilon}) \leq O(n^{0.697831+\epsilon})-approximation (for arbitrary constant ϵ>0\epsilon > 0) for Densest kk-Subhypergraph and an O~(n2/5)\tilde O(n^{2/5})-approximation for Minimum pp-Union. We also give an O(m)O(\sqrt{m})-approximation for Minimum pp-Union in general hypergraphs. Finally, we examine the interesting special case of interval hypergraphs (instances where the vertices are a subset of the natural numbers and the hyperedges are intervals of the line) and prove that both problems admit an exact polynomial time solution on these instances.Comment: 21 page

    Approximation Algorithms for Partially Colorable Graphs

    Graph coloring problems are a central topic of study in the theory of algorithms. We study the problem of partially coloring partially colorable graphs. For alpha = alpha |V| such that the graph induced on S is k-colorable. Partial k-colorability is a more robust structural property of a graph than k-colorability. For graphs that arise in practice, partial k-colorability might be a better notion to use than k-colorability, since data arising in practice often contains various forms of noise. We give a polynomial time algorithm that takes as input a (1 - epsilon)-partially 3-colorable graph G and a constant gamma in [epsilon, 1/10], and colors a (1 - epsilon/gamma) fraction of the vertices using O~(n^{0.25 + O(gamma^{1/2})}) colors. We also study natural semi-random families of instances of partially 3-colorable graphs and partially 2-colorable graphs, and give stronger bi-criteria approximation guarantees for these family of instances

    Pseudorandomness via the discrete Fourier transform

    We present a new approach to constructing unconditional pseudorandom generators against classes of functions that involve computing a linear function of the inputs. We give an explicit construction of a pseudorandom generator that fools the discrete Fourier transforms of linear functions with seed-length that is nearly logarithmic (up to polyloglog factors) in the input size and the desired error parameter. Our result gives a single pseudorandom generator that fools several important classes of tests computable in logspace that have been considered in the literature, including halfspaces (over general domains), modular tests and combinatorial shapes. For all these classes, our generator is the first that achieves near logarithmic seed-length in both the input length and the error parameter. Getting such a seed-length is a natural challenge in its own right, which needs to be overcome in order to derandomize RL - a central question in complexity theory. Our construction combines ideas from a large body of prior work, ranging from a classical construction of [NN93] to the recent gradually increasing independence paradigm of [KMN11, CRSW13, GMRTV12], while also introducing some novel analytic machinery which might find other applications

    Line-distortion, Bandwidth and Path-length of a graph

    We investigate the minimum line-distortion and the minimum bandwidth problems on unweighted graphs and their relations with the minimum length of a Robertson-Seymour's path-decomposition. The length of a path-decomposition of a graph is the largest diameter of a bag in the decomposition. The path-length of a graph is the minimum length over all its path-decompositions. In particular, we show: - if a graph GG can be embedded into the line with distortion kk, then GG admits a Robertson-Seymour's path-decomposition with bags of diameter at most kk in GG; - for every class of graphs with path-length bounded by a constant, there exist an efficient constant-factor approximation algorithm for the minimum line-distortion problem and an efficient constant-factor approximation algorithm for the minimum bandwidth problem; - there is an efficient 2-approximation algorithm for computing the path-length of an arbitrary graph; - AT-free graphs and some intersection families of graphs have path-length at most 2; - for AT-free graphs, there exist a linear time 8-approximation algorithm for the minimum line-distortion problem and a linear time 4-approximation algorithm for the minimum bandwidth problem

    Testing Hamiltonicity (And Other Problems) in Minor-Free Graphs

    In this paper we provide sub-linear algorithms for several fundamental problems in the setting in which the input graph excludes a fixed minor, i.e., is a minor-free graph. In particular, we provide the following algorithms for minor-free unbounded degree graphs. 1) A tester for Hamiltonicity with two-sided error with poly(1/?)-query complexity, where ? is the proximity parameter. 2) A local algorithm, as defined by Rubinfeld et al. (ICS 2011), for constructing a spanning subgraph with almost minimum weight, specifically, at most a factor (1+?) of the optimum, with poly(1/?)-query complexity. Both our algorithms use partition oracles, a tool introduced by Hassidim et al. (FOCS 2009), which are oracles that provide access to a partition of the graph such that the number of cut-edges is small and each part of the partition is small. The polynomial dependence in 1/? of our algorithms is achieved by combining the recent poly(d/?)-query partition oracle of Kumar-Seshadhri-Stolman (ECCC 2021) for minor-free graphs with degree bounded by d. For bounded degree minor-free graphs we introduce the notion of covering partition oracles which is a relaxed version of partition oracles and design a poly(d/?)-time covering partition oracle for this family of graphs. Using our covering partition oracle we provide the same results as above (except that the tester for Hamiltonicity has one-sided error) for minor-free bounded degree graphs, as well as showing that any property which is monotone and additive (e.g. bipartiteness) can be tested in minor-free graphs by making poly(d/?)-queries. The benefit of using the covering partition oracle rather than the partition oracle in our algorithms is its simplicity and an improved polynomial dependence in 1/? in the obtained query complexity
