    Mathematical Modelling for Load Balancing and Minimization of Coordination Losses in Multirobot Stations

    The automotive industry is moving from mass production towards an individualized production, in order to improve product quality and reduce costs and material waste. This thesis concerns aspects of load balancing of industrial robots in the automotive manufacturing industry, considering efficient algorithms required by an individualized production. The goal of the load balancing problem is to improve the equipment utilization. Several approaches for solving the load balancing problem are presented along with details on mathematical tools and subroutines employed.Our contributions to the solution of the load balancing problem are manifold. First, to circumvent robot coordination we have constructed disjoint robot programs, which require no coordination schemes, are more flexible, admit competitive cycle times for some industrial instances, and may be preferred in an individualized production. Second, since solving the task assignment problem for generating the disjoint robot programs was found to be unreasonably time-consuming, we modelled it as a generalized unrelated parallel machine problem with set packing constraints and suggested a tighter model formulation, which was proven to be much more tractable for a branch--and--cut solver. Third, within continuous collision detection it needs to be determined whether the sweeps of multiple moving robots are disjoint. Our solution uses the maximum velocity of each robot along with distance computations at certain robot configurations to derive a function that provides lower bounds on the minimum distance between the sweeps. The lower bounding function is iteratively minimized and updated with new distance information; our method is substantially faster than previously developed methods

    On the Development of a New Class of Covering Path Models

    The basis of this dissertation work stems from the fact that if one examines system route maps for many bus transit systems in U.S. cities, an interesting pattern emerges. Routes often utilize embedded loops to increase accessibility coverage of a system at the expense of adding a marginal amount of length to the overall path. Further, such routes frequently share a common corridor with respect to traveling in opposing directions, but they may depart spatially from each other in terms of direction. These departures in direction represent embedded loops that are traversed in only one direction. However, the literature has not explored this issue, and in fact, often discourages or outright prevents any loops from occurring whether they are loops that are traversed in both directions or traversed in only one direction. Furthermore, past research on covering path models has not accounted for travel in opposing directions, even when attempting to model transit lines. This is due in part to the roots of the covering path literature.This dissertation presents an analysis of past work and from that defines several new problems that are ‘loop agnostic’ – that is, they neither prevent nor encourage the formation of loops in an optimal route, essentially a new class of covering path problems. Although several loop agnostic models are developed in this dissertation to better represent the maximal covering shortest path problem, these models only capture one aspect of loop use. In the classic Maximal Covering Shortest Path problem, it is assumed that its use in transit will be traversed in both directions. Further, the classic formulation prevents most loops from occurring. A new form of this model is developed that allows loops to be part of a solution, whenever such loops provide an improvement in the objective function value. This model is called “loop agnostic” as the model neither prevents nor requires loops to be used in a solution. This means that a loop can be present as part of the path, as an out-and-back path or a more complex loop which visits several other nodes before returning to a previously visited node, or even as a ‘lollipop’ shaped route attached to the origin node or the destination node. If one assumes that the covering path can be traversed both in the outbound and inbound directions (which past work has done), any loops that are present will be traversed in both directions and is what we refer to as a bi-directional loop. When addressing the question of bi-directionality in real world systems it is possible that a loop is traversed in only one direction. Such “uni-directional” loops are formed whenever inbound/outbound paths diverge and can be observed in many transit system maps, like those of Bozeman, MT; Eau Claire, WI; and San Luis Obispo, CA. This dissertation also proposes a new problem, the Bi-Directional MCSP, and formulates two new models that account for travel based upon inbound and outbound path directions which allows for the use of shared arcs and uni-directional loops as well as bi-directional loops.This dissertation also presents results from the application of these new models as well as a new heuristic to a hypothetical test network as well as a real world network from Richardson/Garland, Texas. Results demonstrate that loops are present in many optimal solutions and that the route designs that utilize loop structures such as a ‘lollipop,’ ‘barbell,’ and ‘figure eight’ may well be superior to route designs that do not incorporate loops. This gives credence to the designs of virtually all transit systems in small and medium sized cities in the United States

    Following deregulation of the UK inter-city coach market through the 1980 Transport Act the network is now dominated by two firms giving cause to question the success of the policy and the processes enabling competitive freedom. A policy cornerstone was contestability, and though market entry by small and medium sized coach firms in the UK has not been sustained in large quantities, deregulation has arguably been successful in maintaining low prices and stimulating innovation and quality improvements. The research examines potential reasons for the lack of multiple firm activity in the UK given the freedoms afforded by the market structure and tracks changes in the market. Consolidating early academic work and filling knowledge gaps with non-academic and trade press data, the research also outlines economic market structures that characterise the market across the research period and which have influenced the success of deregulation. The research compares subsequently liberalised European markets with the UK, examining factors that have stimulated and suppressed market entry. The conclusions focus on factors that are critical to market success, such as: the requirement for a comprehensive network to maximise efficiency and reach; strong demand in both service directions; brand awareness (local level and/or nationwide); e-commerce platforms, and financial resources to mitigate losses while building market share. The research finds that entry by small and medium sized firms can only be sustained if at least one of these factors are present. In parallel the research demonstrates movement through several economic structures by each market, in-part meeting objectives set by Governments, and results in a cyclical model to show the likely lifecycle of a liberalised inter-city coach market. The research finds that settled state structures have provided such freedom that large firms may now more easily compete (retaliate) or change business models (switching the main role of competition away from the open market to new monopsonistic sub-markets) with monopoly control remaining in the open market - a policy failure perhaps but maintaining the mode as a viable competitor in the public transport mix. The main research finding is how e-commerce has shaped liberalisation, shortening early competitive phases, altering travel behaviour, and raising customer expectations – all creating new barriers for smaller firms but seeing an increase in use, reach and coverage for large firms and new opportunities for 'virtual' providers

    Since 1964, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has supported a program of summer faculty fellowships for engineering and science educators. In a series of collaborations between NASA research and development centers and nearby universities, engineering faculty members spend 10 weeks working with professional peers on research. The Summer Faculty Program Committee of the American Society for Engineering Education supervises the programs. Objectives of the program are (1) to further the professional knowledge of qualified engineering and science faculty members; (2) to stimulate and exchange ideas between participants and NASA; (3) to enrich and refresh the research and teaching activities of participants' institutions; and (4) to contribute to the research objectives of the NASA center

    OPTIMIZATION OF RAILWAY TRANSPORTATION HAZMATS AND REGULAR COMMODITIES

    Transportation of dangerous goods has been receiving more attention in the realm of academic and scientific research during the last few decades as countries have been increasingly becoming industrialized throughout the world, thereby making Hazmats an integral part of our life style. However, the number of scholarly articles in this field is not as many as those of other areas in SCM. Considering the low-probability-and-high-consequence (LPHC) essence of transportation of Hazmats, on the one hand, and immense volume of shipments accounting for more than hundred tons in North America and Europe, on the other, we can safely state that the number of scholarly articles and dissertations have not been proportional to the significance of the subject of interest. On this ground, we conducted our research to contribute towards further developing the domain of Hazmats transportation, and sustainable supply chain management (SSCM), in general terms. Transportation of Hazmats, from logistical standpoint, may include all modes of transport via air, marine, road and rail, as well as intermodal transportation systems. Although road shipment is predominant in most of the literature, railway transportation of Hazmats has proven to be a potentially significant means of transporting dangerous goods with respect to both economies of scale and risk of transportation; these factors, have not just given rise to more thoroughly investigation of intermodal transportation of Hazmats using road and rail networks, but has encouraged the competition between rail and road companies which may indeed have some inherent advantages compared to the other medium due to their infrastructural and technological backgrounds. Truck shipment has ostensibly proven to be providing more flexibility; trains, per contra, provide more reliability in terms of transport risk for conveying Hazmats in bulks. In this thesis, in consonance with the aforementioned motivation, we provide an introduction into the hazardous commodities shipment through rail network in the first chapter of the thesis. Providing relevant statistics on the volume of Hazmat goods, number of accidents, rate of incidents, and rate of fatalities and injuries due to the incidents involving Hazmats, will shed light onto the significance of the topic under study. As well, we review the most pertinent articles while putting more emphasis on the state-of-the-art papers, in chapter two. Following the discussion in chapter 3 and looking at the problem from carrier company’s perspective, a mixed integer quadratically constraint problem (MIQCP) is developed which seeks for the minimization of transportation cost under a set of constraints including those associating with Hazmats. Due to the complexity of the problem, the risk function has been piecewise linearized using a set of auxiliary variables, thereby resulting in an MIP problem. Further, considering the interests of both carrier companies and regulatory agencies, which are minimization of cost and risk, respectively, a multiobjective MINLP model is developed, which has been reduced to an MILP through piecewise linearization of the risk term in the objective function. For both single-objective and multiobjective formulations, model variants with bifurcated and nonbifurcated flows have been presented. Then, in chapter 4, we carry out experiments considering two main cases where the first case presents smaller instances of the problem and the second case focuses on a larger instance of the problem. Eventually, in chapter five, we conclude the dissertation with a summary of the overall discussion as well as presenting some comments on avenues of future work

    Optimization of vehicle routing and scheduling with travel time variability - application in winter road maintenance

    This study developed a mathematical model for optimizing vehicle routing and scheduling, which can be used to collect travel time information, and also to perform winter road maintenance operations (e.g., salting, plowing). The objective of this research was to minimize the total vehicle travel time to complete a given set of service tasks, subject to resource constraints (e.g., truck capacity, fleet size) and operational constraints (e.g., service time windows, service time limit). The nature of the problem is to design vehicle routes and schedules to perform the required service on predetermined road segments, which can be interpreted as an arc routing problem (ARP). By using a network transformation technique, an ARP can be transformed into a well-studied node routing problem (NRP). A set-partitioning (SP) approach was introduced to formulate the problem into an integer programming problem (I PP). To solve this problem, firstly, a number of feasible routes were generated, subject to resources and operational constraints. A genetic algorithm based heuristic was developed to improve the efficiency of generating feasible routes. Secondly, the corresponding travel time of each route was computed. Finally, the feasible routes were entered into the linear programming solver (CPL EX) to obtain final optimized results. The impact of travel time variability on vehicle routing and scheduling for transportation planning was also considered in this study. Usually in the concern of vehicle and pedestrian\u27s safety, federal, state governments and local agencies are more leaning towards using a conservative approach with constant travel time for the planning of winter roadway maintenance than an aggressive approach, which means that they would rather have a redundancy of plow trucks than a shortage. The proposed model and solution algorithm were validated with an empirical case study of 41 snow sections in the northwest area of New Jersey. Comprehensive analysis based on a deterministic travel time setting and a time-dependent travel time setting were both performed. The results show that a model that includes time dependent travel time produces better results than travel time being underestimated and being overestimated in transportation planning. In addition, a scenario-based analysis suggests that the current NJDOT operation based on given snow sector design, service routes and fleet size can be improved by the proposed model that considers time dependent travel time and the geometry of the road network to optimize vehicle routing and scheduling. In general, the benefit of better routing and scheduling design for snow plowing could be reflected in smaller minimum required fleet size and shorter total vehicle travel time. The depot location and number of service routes also have an impact on the final optimized results. This suggests that managers should consider the depot location, vehicle fleet sizing and the routing design problem simultaneously at the planning stage to minimize the total cost for snow plowing operations
