    Metric combinatorics of convex polyhedra: cut loci and nonoverlapping unfoldings

    This paper is a study of the interaction between the combinatorics of boundaries of convex polytopes in arbitrary dimension and their metric geometry. Let S be the boundary of a convex polytope of dimension d+1, or more generally let S be a `convex polyhedral pseudomanifold'. We prove that S has a polyhedral nonoverlapping unfolding into R^d, so the metric space S is obtained from a closed (usually nonconvex) polyhedral ball in R^d by identifying pairs of boundary faces isometrically. Our existence proof exploits geodesic flow away from a source point v in S, which is the exponential map to S from the tangent space at v. We characterize the `cut locus' (the closure of the set of points in S with more than one shortest path to v) as a polyhedral complex in terms of Voronoi diagrams on facets. Analyzing infinitesimal expansion of the wavefront consisting of points at constant distance from v on S produces an algorithmic method for constructing Voronoi diagrams in each facet, and hence the unfolding of S. The algorithm, for which we provide pseudocode, solves the discrete geodesic problem. Its main construction generalizes the source unfolding for boundaries of 3-polytopes into R^2. We present conjectures concerning the number of shortest paths on the boundaries of convex polyhedra, and concerning continuous unfolding of convex polyhedra.     Practical methods for approximating shortest paths on a convex polytope in R3

    AbstractWe propose an extremely simple approximation scheme for computing shortest paths on the surface of a convex polytope in three dimensions. Given a convex polytope P with n vertices and two points p, q on its surface, let dP(p, q) denote the shortest path distance between p and q on the surface of P. Our algorithm produces a path of length at most 2dP(p, q) in time O(n). Extending this result, we can also compute an approximation of the shortest path tree rooted at an arbitrary point x ∈ P in time O(n log n). In the approximate tree, the distance between a vertex v ∈ P and x is at most cdP(x, v), where c = 2.38(1 + ε) for any fixed ε > 0. The best algorithms for computing an exact shortest path on a convex polytope take Ω(n2) time in the worst case; in addition, they are too complicated to be suitable in practice. We can also get a weak approximation result in the general case of k disjoint convex polyhedra: in O(n) time our algorithm gives a path of length at most 2k times the optimal

    Exact Geosedics and Shortest Paths on Polyhedral Surface

    We present two algorithms for computing distances along a non-convex polyhedral surface. The first algorithm computes exact minimal-geodesic distances and the second algorithm combines these distances to compute exact shortest-path distances along the surface. Both algorithms have been extended to compute the exact minimalgeodesic paths and shortest paths. These algorithms have been implemented and validated on surfaces for which the correct solutions are known, in order to verify the accuracy and to measure the run-time performance, which is cubic or less for each algorithm. The exact-distance computations carried out by these algorithms are feasible for large-scale surfaces containing tens of thousands of vertices, and are a necessary component of near-isometric surface flattening methods that accurately transform curved manifolds into flat representations.National Institute for Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (R01 EB001550

    Geometric-based Optimization Algorithms for Cable Routing and Branching in Cluttered Environments

    The need for designing lighter and more compact systems often leaves limited space for planning routes for the connectors that enable interactions among the system’s components. Finding optimal routes for these connectors in a densely populated environment left behind at the detail design stage has been a challenging problem for decades. A variety of deterministic as well as heuristic methods has been developed to address different instances of this problem. While the focus of the deterministic methods is primarily on the optimality of the final solution, the heuristics offer acceptable solutions, especially for such problems, in a reasonable amount of time without guaranteeing to find optimal solutions. This study is an attempt to furthering the efforts in deterministic optimization methods to tackle the routing problem in two and three dimensions by focusing on the optimality of final solutions. The objective of this research is twofold. First, a mathematical framework is proposed for the optimization of the layout of wiring connectors in planar cluttered environments. The problem looks at finding the optimal tree network that spans multiple components to be connected with the aim of minimizing the overall length of the connectors while maximizing their common length (for maintainability and traceability of connectors). The optimization problem is formulated as a bi-objective problem and two solution methods are proposed: (1) to solve for the optimal locations of a known number of breakouts (where the connectors branch out) using mixed-binary optimization and visibility notion and (2) to find the minimum length tree that spans multiple components of the system and generates the optimal layout using the previously-developed convex hull based routing. The computational performance of these methods in solving a variety of problems is further evaluated. Second, the problem of finding the shortest route connecting two given nodes in a 3D cluttered environment is considered and addressed through deterministically generating a graphical representation of the collision-free space and searching for the shortest path on the found graph. The method is tested on sample workspaces with scattered convex polyhedra and its computational performance is evaluated. The work demonstrates the NP-hardness aspect of the problem which becomes quickly intractable as added components or increase in facets are considered

    Graph problems arising from parameter identification of discrete dynamical systems

    This paper focuses on combinatorial feasibility and optimization problems that arise in the context of parameter identification of discrete dynamical systems. Given a candidate parametric model for a physical system and a set of experimental observations, the objective of parameter identification is to provide estimates of the parameter values for which the model can reproduce the experiments. To this end, we define a finite graph corresponding to the model, to each arc of which a set of parameters is associated. Paths in this graph are regarded as feasible only if the sets of parameters corresponding to the arcs of the path have nonempty intersection. We study feasibility and optimization problems on such feasible paths, focusing on computational complexity. We show that, under certain restrictions on the sets of parameters, some of the problems become tractable, whereas others are NP-hard. In a similar vein, we define and study some graph problems for experimental design, whose goal is to support the scientist in optimally designing new experiment
