Modeling and Design of Millimeter-Wave Networks for Highway Vehicular Communication
Connected and autonomous vehicles will play a pivotal role in future
Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs) and smart cities, in general.
High-speed and low-latency wireless communication links will allow
municipalities to warn vehicles against safety hazards, as well as support
cloud-driving solutions to drastically reduce traffic jams and air pollution.
To achieve these goals, vehicles need to be equipped with a wide range of
sensors generating and exchanging high rate data streams. Recently, millimeter
wave (mmWave) techniques have been introduced as a means of fulfilling such
high data rate requirements. In this paper, we model a highway communication
network and characterize its fundamental link budget metrics. In particular, we
specifically consider a network where vehicles are served by mmWave Base
Stations (BSs) deployed alongside the road. To evaluate our highway network, we
develop a new theoretical model that accounts for a typical scenario where
heavy vehicles (such as buses and lorries) in slow lanes obstruct Line-of-Sight
(LOS) paths of vehicles in fast lanes and, hence, act as blockages. Using tools
from stochastic geometry, we derive approximations for the
Signal-to-Interference-plus-Noise Ratio (SINR) outage probability, as well as
the probability that a user achieves a target communication rate (rate coverage
probability). Our analysis provides new design insights for mmWave highway
communication networks. In considered highway scenarios, we show that reducing
the horizontal beamwidth from to determines a minimal
reduction in the SINR outage probability (namely, at
maximum). Also, unlike bi-dimensional mmWave cellular networks, for small BS
densities (namely, one BS every m) it is still possible to achieve an

Ultra Reliable UAV Communication Using Altitude and Cooperation Diversity
The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that serve as aerial base stations
is expected to become predominant in the next decade. However, in order for
this technology to unfold its full potential it is necessary to develop a
fundamental understanding of the distinctive features of air-to-ground (A2G)
links. As a contribution in this direction, this paper proposes a generic
framework for the analysis and optimization of the A2G systems. In contrast to
the existing literature, this framework incorporates both height-dependent path
loss exponent and small-scale fading, and unifies a widely used
ground-to-ground channel model with that of A2G for analysis of large-scale
wireless networks. We derive analytical expressions for the optimal UAV height
that minimizes the outage probability of a given A2G link. Moreover, our
framework allows us to derive a height-dependent closed-form expression and a
tight lower bound for the outage probability of an \textit{A2G cooperative
communication} network. Our results suggest that the optimal location of the
UAVs with respect to the ground nodes does not change by the inclusion of
ground relays. This enables interesting insights in the deployment of future
A2G networks, as the system reliability could be adjusted dynamically by adding
relaying nodes without requiring changes in the position of the corresponding
UAVs
A Survey of Physical Layer Security Techniques for 5G Wireless Networks and Challenges Ahead
Physical layer security which safeguards data confidentiality based on the
information-theoretic approaches has received significant research interest
recently. The key idea behind physical layer security is to utilize the
intrinsic randomness of the transmission channel to guarantee the security in
physical layer. The evolution towards 5G wireless communications poses new
challenges for physical layer security research. This paper provides a latest
survey of the physical layer security research on various promising 5G
technologies, including physical layer security coding, massive multiple-input
multiple-output, millimeter wave communications, heterogeneous networks,
non-orthogonal multiple access, full duplex technology, etc. Technical
challenges which remain unresolved at the time of writing are summarized and

V2X Content Distribution Based on Batched Network Coding with Distributed Scheduling
Content distribution is an application in intelligent transportation system
to assist vehicles in acquiring information such as digital maps and
entertainment materials. In this paper, we consider content distribution from a
single roadside infrastructure unit to a group of vehicles passing by it. To
combat the short connection time and the lossy channel quality, the downloaded
contents need to be further shared among vehicles after the initial
broadcasting phase. To this end, we propose a joint infrastructure-to-vehicle
(I2V) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication scheme based on batched sparse
(BATS) coding to minimize the traffic overhead and reduce the total
transmission delay. In the I2V phase, the roadside unit (RSU) encodes the
original large-size file into a number of batches in a rateless manner, each
containing a fixed number of coded packets, and sequentially broadcasts them
during the I2V connection time. In the V2V phase, vehicles perform the network
coded cooperative sharing by re-encoding the received packets. We propose a
utility-based distributed algorithm to efficiently schedule the V2V cooperative
transmissions, hence reducing the transmission delay. A closed-form expression
for the expected rank distribution of the proposed content distribution scheme
is derived, which is used to design the optimal BATS code. The performance of
the proposed content distribution scheme is evaluated by extensive simulations
that consider multi-lane road and realistic vehicular traffic settings, and
shown to significantly outperform the existing content distribution protocols.Comment: 12 pages and 9 figure
Fine-Grained Reliability for V2V Communications around Suburban and Urban Intersections
Safe transportation is a key use-case of the 5G/LTE Rel.15+ communications,
where an end-to-end reliability of 0.99999 is expected for a vehicle-to-vehicle
(V2V) transmission distance of 100-200 m. Since communications reliability is
related to road-safety, it is crucial to verify the fulfillment of the
performance, especially for accident-prone areas such as intersections. We
derive closed-form expressions for the V2V transmission reliability near
suburban corners and urban intersections over finite interference regions. The
analysis is based on plausible street configurations, traffic scenarios, and
empirically-supported channel propagation. We show the means by which the
performance metric can serve as a preliminary design tool to meet a target
reliability. We then apply meta distribution concepts to provide a careful
dissection of V2V communications reliability. Contrary to existing work on
infinite roads, when we consider finite road segments for practical deployment,
fine-grained reliability per realization exhibits bimodal behavior. Either
performance for a certain vehicular traffic scenario is very reliable or
extremely unreliable, but nowhere in relatively proximity to the average
performance. In other words, standard SINR-based average performance metrics
are analytically accurate but can be insufficient from a practical viewpoint.
Investigating other safety-critical point process networks at the meta

Vehicular Dynamic Spectrum Access: Using Cognitive Radio for Automobile Networks
Vehicular Dynamic Spectrum Access (VDSA) combines the advantages of dynamic spectrum access to achieve higher spectrum efficiency and the special mobility pattern of vehicle fleets. This dissertation presents several noval contributions with respect to vehicular communications, especially vehicle-to-vehicle communications. Starting from a system engineering aspect, this dissertation will present several promising future directions for vehicle communications, taking into consideration both the theoretical and practical aspects of wireless communication deployment. This dissertation starts with presenting a feasibility analysis using queueing theory to model and estimate the performance of VDSA within a TV whitespace environment. The analytical tool uses spectrum measurement data and vehicle density to find upper bounds of several performance metrics for a VDSA scenario in TVWS. Then, a framework for optimizing VDSA via artificial intelligence and learning, as well as simulation testbeds that reflect realistic spectrum sharing scenarios between vehicle networks and heterogeneous wireless networks including wireless local area networks and wireless regional area networks. Detailed experimental results justify the testbed for emulating a mobile dynamic spectrum access environment composed of heterogeneous networks with four dimensional mutual interference. Vehicular cooperative communication is the other proposed technique that combines the cooperative communication technology and vehicle platooning, an emerging concept that is expected to both increase highway utilization and enhance both driver experience and safety. This dissertation will focus on the coexistence of multiple vehicle groups in shared spectrum, where intra-group cooperation and inter-group competition are investigated in the aspect of channel access. Finally, a testbed implementation VDSA is presented and a few applications are developed within a VDSA environment, demonstrating the feasibility and benefits of some features in a future transportation system
