Quantale Modules and their Operators, with Applications

The central topic of this work is the categories of modules over unital quantales. The main categorical properties are established and a special class of operators, called Q-module transforms, is defined. Such operators - that turn out to be precisely the homomorphisms between free objects in those categories - find concrete applications in two different branches of image processing, namely fuzzy image compression and mathematical morphology

Interval LU-fuzzy arithmetic in the Black and Scholes option pricing

In financial markets people have to cope with a lot of uncertainty while making decisions. Many models have been introduced in the last years to handle vagueness but it is very difficult to capture together all the fundamental characteristics of real markets. Fuzzy modeling for finance seems to have some challenging features describing the financial markets behavior; in this paper we show that the vagueness induced by the fuzzy mathematics can be relevant in modelling objects in finance, especially when a flexible parametrization is adopted to represent the fuzzy numbers. Fuzzy calculus for financial applications requires a big amount of computations and the LU-fuzzy representation produces good results due to the fact that it is computationally fast and it reproduces the essential quality of the shape of fuzzy numbers involved in computations. The paper considers the Black and Scholes option pricing formula, as long as many other have done in the last few years. We suggest the use of the LU-fuzzy parametric representation for fuzzy numbers, introduced in Guerra and Stefanini and improved in Stefanini, Sorini and Guerra, in the framework of the Black and Scholes model for option pricing, everywhere recognized as a benchmark; the details of the computations by the interval fuzzy arithmetic approach and an illustrative example are also incuded.Fuzzy Operations, Option Pricing, Black and Scholes

Bibliometric Mapping of the Computational Intelligence Field

In this paper, a bibliometric study of the computational intelligence field is presented. Bibliometric maps showing the associations between the main concepts in the field are provided for the periods 1996–2000 and 2001–2005. Both the current structure of the field and the evolution of the field over the last decade are analyzed. In addition, a number of emerging areas in the field are identified. It turns out that computational intelligence can best be seen as a field that is structured around four important types of problems, namely control problems, classification problems, regression problems, and optimization problems. Within the computational intelligence field, the neural networks and fuzzy systems subfields are fairly intertwined, whereas the evolutionary computation subfield has a relatively independent position.neural networks;bibliometric mapping;fuzzy systems;bibliometrics;computational intelligence;evolutionary computation

    Unsharp Quantum Reality

    Get PDF
The positive operator (valued) measures (POMs) allow one to generalize the notion of observable beyond the traditional one based on projection valued measures (PVMs). Here, we argue that this generalized conception of observable enables a consistent notion of unsharp reality and with it an adequate concept of joint properties. A sharp or unsharp property manifests itself as an element of sharp or unsharp reality by its tendency to become actual or to actualize a specific measurement outcome. This actualization tendency-or potentiality-of a property is quantified by the associated quantum probability. The resulting single-case interpretation of probability as a degree of reality will be explained in detail and its role in addressing the tensions between quantum and classical accounts of the physical world will be elucidated. It will be shown that potentiality can be viewed as a causal agency that evolves in a well-defined way
