    Approximability of Combinatorial Optimization Problems on Power Law Networks

    One of the central parts in the study of combinatorial optimization is to classify the NP-hard optimization problems in terms of their approximability. In this thesis we study the Minimum Vertex Cover (Min-VC) problem and the Minimum Dominating Set (Min-DS) problem in the context of so called power law graphs. This family of graphs is motivated by recent findings on the degree distribution of existing real-world networks such as the Internet, the World-Wide Web, biological networks and social networks. In a power law graph the number of nodes yi of a given degree i is proportional to i-ß, that is, the distribution of node degrees follows a power law. The parameter ß > 0 is the so called power law exponent. With the aim of classifying the above combinatorial optimization problems, we are pursuing two basic approaches in this thesis. One is concerned with complexity theory and the other with the theory of algorithms. As a result, our main contributions to the classification of the problems Min-VC and Min-DS in the context of power law graphs are twofold: - Firstly, we give substantial improvements on the previously known approximation lower bounds for Min-VC and Min-DS in combinatorial power law graphs. More precisely, we are going to show the APX-hardness of Min-VC and Min-DS in connected power law graphs and give constant factor lower bounds for Min-VC and the first logarithmic lower bounds for Min-DS in this setting. The results are based on new approximation-preserving embedding reductions that embed certain instances of Min-VC and Min-DS into connected power law graphs. - Secondly, we design a new approximation algorithm for the Min-VC problem in random power law graphs with an expected approximation ratio strictly less than 2. The main tool is a deterministic rounding procedure that acts on a half-integral solution for Min-VC and produces a good approximation on the subset of low degree vertices. Moreover, for the case of Min-DS, we improve on the previously best upper bounds that rely on a greedy algorithm. The improvements are based on our new techniques for determining upper and lower bounds on the size and the volume of node intervals in power law graphs

    Greed is Good for Deterministic Scale-Free Networks

    Large real-world networks typically follow a power-law degree distribution. To study such networks, numerous random graph models have been proposed. However, real-world networks are not drawn at random. In fact, the behavior of real-world networks and random graph models can be the complete opposite of one another, depending on the considered property. Brach, Cygan, Lacki, and Sankowski [SODA 2016] introduced two natural deterministic conditions: (1) a power-law upper bound on the degree distribution (PLB-U) and (2) power-law neighborhoods, that is, the degree distribution of neighbors of each vertex is also upper bounded by a power law (PLB-N). They showed that many real-world networks satisfy both deterministic properties and exploit them to design faster algorithms for a number of classical graph problems like transitive closure, maximum matching, determinant, PageRank, matrix inverse, counting triangles and maximum clique. We complement the work of Brach et al. by showing that some well-studied random graph models exhibit both the mentioned PLB properties and additionally also a power-law lower bound on the degree distribution (PLB-L). All three properties hold with high probability for Chung-Lu Random Graphs and Geometric Inhomogeneous Random Graphs and almost surely for Hyperbolic Random Graphs. As a consequence, all results of Brach et al. also hold with high probability for Chung-Lu Random Graphs and Geometric Inhomogeneous Random Graphs and almost surely for Hyperbolic Random Graphs. In the second part of this work we study three classical NP-hard combinatorial optimization problems on PLB networks. It is known that on general graphs, a greedy algorithm, which chooses nodes in the order of their degree, only achieves an approximation factor of asymptotically at least logarithmic in the maximum degree for Minimum Vertex Cover and Minimum Dominating Set, and an approximation factor of asymptotically at least the maximum degree for Maximum Independent Set. We prove that the PLB-U property suffices such that the greedy approach achieves a constant-factor approximation for all three problems. We also show that all three combinatorial optimization problems are APX-complete, even if all PLB-properties hold. Hence, a PTAS cannot be expected, unless P=NP

    Cooperation through social influence

    We consider a simple and altruistic multiagent system in which the agents are eager to perform a collective task but where their real engagement depends on the willingness to perform the task of other influential agents. We model this scenario by an influence game, a cooperative simple game in which a team (or coalition) of players succeeds if it is able to convince enough agents to participate in the task (to vote in favor of a decision). We take the linear threshold model as the influence model. We show first the expressiveness of influence games showing that they capture the class of simple games. Then we characterize the computational complexity of various problems on influence games, including measures (length and width), values (Shapley-Shubik and Banzhaf) and properties (of teams and players). Finally, we analyze those problems for some particular extremal cases, with respect to the propagation of influence, showing tighter complexity characterizations.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author’s final draft

    On the Approximability of the Traveling Salesman Problem with Line Neighborhoods

    We study the variant of the Euclidean Traveling Salesman problem where instead of a set of points, we are given a set of lines as input, and the goal is to find the shortest tour that visits each line. The best known upper and lower bounds for the problem in Rd\mathbb{R}^d, with d3d\ge 3, are NP\mathrm{NP}-hardness and an O(log3n)O(\log^3 n)-approximation algorithm which is based on a reduction to the group Steiner tree problem. We show that TSP with lines in Rd\mathbb{R}^d is APX-hard for any d3d\ge 3. More generally, this implies that TSP with kk-dimensional flats does not admit a PTAS for any 1kd21\le k \leq d-2 unless P=NP\mathrm{P}=\mathrm{NP}, which gives a complete classification of the approximability of these problems, as there are known PTASes for k=0k=0 (i.e., points) and k=d1k=d-1 (hyperplanes). We are able to give a stronger inapproximability factor for d=O(logn)d=O(\log n) by showing that TSP with lines does not admit a (2ϵ)(2-\epsilon)-approximation in dd dimensions under the unique games conjecture. On the positive side, we leverage recent results on restricted variants of the group Steiner tree problem in order to give an O(log2n)O(\log^2 n)-approximation algorithm for the problem, albeit with a running time of nO(loglogn)n^{O(\log\log n)}

    Efficiently Approximating Vertex Cover on Scale-Free Networks with Underlying Hyperbolic Geometry

    Finding a minimum vertex cover in a network is a fundamental NP-complete graph problem. One way to deal with its computational hardness, is to trade the qualitative performance of an algorithm (allowing non-optimal outputs) for an improved running time. For the vertex cover problem, there is a gap between theory and practice when it comes to understanding this tradeoff. On the one hand, it is known that it is NP-hard to approximate a minimum vertex cover within a factor of ?2. On the other hand, a simple greedy algorithm yields close to optimal approximations in practice. A promising approach towards understanding this discrepancy is to recognize the differences between theoretical worst-case instances and real-world networks. Following this direction, we close the gap between theory and practice by providing an algorithm that efficiently computes nearly optimal vertex cover approximations on hyperbolic random graphs; a network model that closely resembles real-world networks in terms of degree distribution, clustering, and the small-world property. More precisely, our algorithm computes a (1 + o(1))-approximation, asymptotically almost surely, and has a running time of ?(m log(n)). The proposed algorithm is an adaption of the successful greedy approach, enhanced with a procedure that improves on parts of the graph where greedy is not optimal. This makes it possible to introduce a parameter that can be used to tune the tradeoff between approximation performance and running time. Our empirical evaluation on real-world networks shows that this allows for improving over the near-optimal results of the greedy approach
