    Interactive Motion Planning for Multi-agent Systems with Physics-based and Behavior Constraints

    Man-made entities and humans rely on movement as an essential form of interaction with the world. Whether it is an autonomous vehicle navigating crowded roadways or a simulated pedestrian traversing a virtual world, each entity must compute safe, effective paths to achieve their goals. In addition, these entities, termed agents, are subject to unique physical and behavioral limitations within their environment. For example, vehicles have a finite physical turning radius and must obey behavioral constraints such as traffic signals and rules of the road. Effective motion planning algorithms for diverse agents must account for these physics-based and behavior constraints. In this dissertation, we present novel motion planning algorithms that account for constraints which physically limit the agent and impose behavioral limitations on the virtual agents. We describe representational approaches to capture specific physical constraints on the various agents and propose abstractions to model behavior constraints affecting them. We then describe algorithms to plan motions for agents who are subject to the modeled constraints. First, we describe a biomechanically accurate elliptical representation for virtual pedestrians; we also describe human-like movement constraints corresponding to shoulder-turning and side-stepping in dense environments. We detail a novel motion planning algorithm extending velocity obstacles to generate collisionfree paths for hundreds of elliptical agents at interactive rates. Next, we describe an algorithm to encode dynamics and traffic-like behavior constraints for autonomous vehicles in urban and highway environments. We describe a motion planning algorithm to generate safe, high-speed avoidance maneuvers using a novel optimization function and modified control obstacle formulation, and we also present a simulation framework to evaluate driving strategies. Next, we present an approach to incorporate high-level reasoning to model the motions and behaviors of virtual agents in terms of verbal interactions with other agents or avatars. Our approach leverages natural-language interaction to reduce uncertainty and generate effective plans. Finally, we describe an application of our techniques to simulate pedestrian behaviors for gathering simulated data about loading, unloading, and evacuating an aircraft.Doctor of Philosoph

    Human-in-the-loop design framework introduced in this dissertation utilizes Digital Human Modeling (DHM) to incorporate Human Factors Engineering (HFE) design principles early in design process. It embodies scientific methods (e.g., mathematics) and artistic approaches (e.g., visualization) to assess human well-being and overall system performance. This framework focuses not only on ergonomics assessments but also actual design process including, but not limited to, concept development, structural integrity and digital prototyping.     Biomechanical Locomotion Heterogeneity in Synthetic Crowds

    Synthetic crowd simulation combines rule sets at different conceptual layers to represent the dynamic nature of crowds while adhering to basic principles of human steering, such as collision avoidance and goal completion. In this dissertation, I explore synthetic crowd simulation at the steering layer using a critical approach to define the central theme of the work, the impact of model representation and agent diversity in crowds. At the steering layer, simulated agents make regular decisions, or actions, related to steering which are often responsible for the emergent behaviours found in the macro-scale crowd. Because of this bottom-up impact of a steering model's defining rule-set, I postulate that biomechanics and diverse biomechanics may alter the outcomes of dynamic synthetic-crowds-based outcomes. This would mean that an assumption of normativity and/or homogeneity among simulated agents and their mobility would provide an inaccurate representation of a scenario. If these results are then used to make real world decisions, say via policy or design, then those populations not represented in the simulated scenario may experience a lack of representation in the actualization of those decisions. A focused literature review shows that applications of both biomechanics and diverse locomotion representation at this layer of modelling are very narrow and often not present. I respond to the narrowness of this representation by addressing both biomechanics and heterogeneity separately. To address the question of performance and importance of locomotion biomechanics in crowd simulation, I use a large scale comparative approach. The industry standard synthetic crowd models are tested under a battery of benchmarks derived from prior work in comparative analysis of synthetic crowds as well as new scenarios derived from built environments. To address the question of the importance of heterogeneity in locomotion biomechanics, I define tiers of impact in the multi-agent crowds model at the steering layer--from the action space, to the agent space, to the crowds space. To this end, additional models and layers are developed to address the modelling and application of heterogeneous locomotion biomechanics in synthetic crowds. The results of both studies form a research arc which shows that the biomechanics in steering models provides important fidelity in several applications and that heterogeneity in the model of locomotion biomechanics directly impacts both qualitative and quantitative synthetic crowds outcomes.     Multi-scale Pedestrian Navigation and Movement in Urban Areas

    Sustainable transport planning highlights the importance of walking to low-carbon and healthy urban transport systems. Studies have identified multiple ways in which vehicle traffic can negatively impact pedestrians and inhibit walking intentions. However, pedestrian-vehicle interactions are underrepresented in models of pedestrian mobility. This omission limits the ability of transport simulations to support pedestrian-centric street design. Pedestrian navigation decisions take place simultaneously at multiple spatial scales. Yet most models of pedestrian behaviour focus either on local physical interactions or optimisation of routes across a road network. This thesis presents a novel hierarchical pedestrian route choice framework that integrates dynamic, perceptual decisions at the street level with abstract, network based decisions at the neighbourhood level. The framework is based on Construal Level Theory which states that decision makers construe decisions based on their psychological distance from the object of the decision. The route choice framework is implemented in a spatial agent-based simulation in which pedestrian and vehicle agents complete trips in an urban environment. Global sensitivity analysis is used to explore the behaviour produced by the multi-scale pedestrian route choice model. Finally, simulation experiments are used to explore the impacts of restrictions to pedestrian movement. The results demonstrate the potential insights that can be gained by linking street scale movement and interactions with neighbourhood level mobility patterns

    Multi-Policy Decision Making for Reliable Navigation in Dynamic Uncertain Environments

    Navigating everyday social environments, in the presence of pedestrians and other dynamic obstacles remains one of the key challenges preventing mobile robots from leaving carefully designed spaces and entering our daily lives. The complex and tightly-coupled interactions between these agents make the environment dynamic and unpredictable, posing a formidable problem for robot motion planning. Trajectory planning methods, supported by models of typical human behavior and personal space, often produce reasonable behavior. However, they do not account for the future closed-loop interactions of other agents with the trajectory being constructed. As a consequence, the trajectories are unable to anticipate cooperative interactions (such as a human yielding), or adverse interactions (such as the robot blocking the way). Ideally, the robot must account for coupled agent-agent interactions while reasoning about possible future outcomes, and then take actions to advance towards its navigational goal without inconveniencing nearby pedestrians. Multi-Policy Decision Making (MPDM) is a novel framework for autonomous navigation in dynamic, uncertain environments where the robot's trajectory is not explicitly planned, but instead, the robot dynamically switches between a set of candidate closed-loop policies, allowing it to adapt to different situations encountered in such environments. The candidate policies are evaluated based on short-term (five-second) forward simulations of samples drawn from the estimated distribution of the agents' current states. These forward simulations and thereby the cost function, capture agent-agent interactions as well as agent-robot interactions which depend on the ego-policy being evaluated. In this thesis, we propose MPDM as a new method for navigation amongst pedestrians by dynamically switching from amongst a library of closed-loop policies. Due to real-time constraints, the robot's emergent behavior is directly affected by the quality of policy evaluation. Approximating how good a policy is based on only a few forward roll-outs is difficult, especially with the large space of possible pedestrian configurations and the sensitivity of the forward simulation to the sampled configurations. Traditional methods based on Monte-Carlo sampling often missed likely, high-cost outcomes, resulting in an over-optimistic evaluation of a policy and unreliable emergent behavior. By re-formulating policy evaluation as an optimization problem and enabling the quick discovery of potentially dangerous outcomes, we make MPDM more reliable and risk-aware. Even with the increased reliability, a major limitation is that MPDM requires the system designer to provide a set of carefully hand-crafted policies as it can evaluate only a few policies reliably in real-time. We radically enhance the expressivity of MPDM by allowing policies to have continuous-valued parameters, while simultaneously satisfying real-time constraints by quickly discovering promising policy parameters through a novel iterative gradient-based algorithm. Overall, we reformulate the traditional motion planning problem and paint it in a very different light --- as a bilevel optimization problem where the robot repeatedly discovers likely high-cost outcomes and adapts its policy parameters avoid these outcomes.     The Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center (VMASC) of Old Dominion University hosted the 2015 Modeling, Simulation, & Visualization Student capstone Conference on April 16th. The Capstone Conference features students in Modeling and Simulation, undergraduates and graduate degree programs, and fields from many colleges and/or universities. Students present their research to an audience of fellow students, faculty, judges, and other distinguished guests. For the students, these presentations afford them the opportunity to impart their innovative research to members of the M&S community from academic, industry, and government backgrounds. Also participating in the conference are faculty and judges who have volunteered their time to impart direct support to their students’ research, facilitate the various conference tracks, serve as judges for each of the tracks, and provide overall assistance to this conference. 2015 marks the ninth year of the VMASC Capstone Conference for Modeling, Simulation and Visualization. This year our conference attracted a number of fine student written papers and presentations, resulting in a total of 51 research works that were presented. This year’s conference had record attendance thanks to the support from the various different departments at Old Dominion University, other local Universities, and the United States Military Academy, at West Point. We greatly appreciated all of the work and energy that has gone into this year’s conference, it truly was a highly collaborative effort that has resulted in a very successful symposium for the M&S community and all of those involved. Below you will find a brief summary of the best papers and best presentations with some simple statistics of the overall conference contribution. Followed by that is a table of contents that breaks down by conference track category with a copy of each included body of work.     Evaluation of software tools in performing advanced evacuation analyses for passenger ships

    As safety regulations for passenger ship design continue to advance, so does the need for evacuation analysis tools to simulate the evacuation process. Currently the IMO requires an evacuation analysis for all new passenger ships in one of two ways: a simplified analysis or an advanced analysis. The simplified analysis takes a macroscopic view of the problem, treating the evacuees as particles in a fluid, flowing to their muster stations through corridors and doors as if they were pipes and valves. On the other hand, the advanced analysis takes a more microscopic approach, treating each evacuee as an individual with their own behaviour and decision making. However, as crowd simulation on passenger ships is a relatively young field of study, there is no clear consensus on the best way to perform this advanced analysis and therefore the guidelines are left more open ended. Consequently, there are several software suites that perform the analysis in different ways. This study aims to evaluate and better understand two different software packages, Evi and Pathfinder, which are capable of performing an advanced evacuation analysis. To do this, the same evacuation scenario on the same Main Vertical Zone (MVZ) of a RoPax ferry was simulated on both software in order to see how the differences in approaching the modelling affected both the numerical results and the user experience, including the time taken to build and run the analysis. These results were further compared with those obtained from a simplified analysis. Despite differences in how the reaction times were distributed, the total completion times measured were very similar, falling within the acceptance criteria set for this study. However, the user experience is where the largest differences between the two software became apparent. While Pathfinder had a more feature-rich toolset to build the geometry, the fact that Evi is purpose built to perform evacuation analyses of passenger ships is apparent in its preset IMO cases and batch running capabilities, providing a clear time advantage in performing the task

    High-statistics pedestrian dynamics on stairways and their probabilistic fundamental diagrams

    Staircases play an essential role in crowd dynamics, allowing pedestrians to flow across large multi-level public facilities such as transportation hubs, and office buildings. Achieving a robust understanding of pedestrian behavior in these facilities is a key societal necessity. What makes this an outstanding scientific challenge is the extreme randomness intrinsic to pedestrian behavior. Any quantitative understanding necessarily needs to be probabilistic, including average dynamics and fluctuations. In this work, we analyze data from an unprecedentedly high statistics year-long pedestrian tracking campaign, in which we anonymously collected millions of trajectories across a staircase within Eindhoven train station (NL). Made possible thanks to a state-of-the-art, faster than real-time, computer vision approach hinged on 3D depth imaging, and YOLOv7-based depth localization. We consider both free-stream conditions, i.e. pedestrians walking in undisturbed, and trafficked conditions, uni/bidirectional flows. We report the position vs density, considering the crowd as a 'compressible' physical medium. We show how pedestrians willingly opt to occupy fewer space than available, accepting a certain degree of compressibility. This is a non-trivial physical feature of pedestrian dynamics and we introduce a novel way to quantify this effect. As density increases, pedestrians strive to keep a minimum distance d = 0.6 m from the person in front of them. Finally, we establish first-of-kind fully resolved probabilistic fundamental diagrams, where we model the pedestrian walking velocity as a mixture of a slow and fast-paced component. Notably, averages and modes of velocity distribution turn out to be substantially different. Our results, including probabilistic parametrizations based on few variables, are key towards improved facility design and realistic simulation of pedestrians on staircases
