    An ant system algorithm for automated trajectory planning

    The paper presents an Ant System based algorithm to optimally plan multi-gravity assist trajectories. The algorithm is designed to solve planning problems in which there is a strong dependency of one decision one all the previously made decisions. In the case of multi-gravity assist trajectories planning, the number of possible paths grows exponentially with the number of planetary encounters. The proposed algorithm avoids scanning all the possible paths and provides good results at a low computational cost. The algorithm builds the solution incrementally, according to Ant System paradigms. Unlike standard ACO, at every planetary encounter, each ant makes a decision based on the information stored in a tabu and feasible list. The approach demonstrated to be competitive, on a number of instances of a real trajectory design problem, against known GA and PSO algorithms

    A Hierarchal Planning Framework for AUV Mission Management in a Spatio-Temporal Varying Ocean

    The purpose of this paper is to provide a hierarchical dynamic mission planning framework for a single autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) to accomplish task-assign process in a limited time interval while operating in an uncertain undersea environment, where spatio-temporal variability of the operating field is taken into account. To this end, a high level reactive mission planner and a low level motion planning system are constructed. The high level system is responsible for task priority assignment and guiding the vehicle toward a target of interest considering on-time termination of the mission. The lower layer is in charge of generating optimal trajectories based on sequence of tasks and dynamicity of operating terrain. The mission planner is able to reactively re-arrange the tasks based on mission/terrain updates while the low level planner is capable of coping unexpected changes of the terrain by correcting the old path and re-generating a new trajectory. As a result, the vehicle is able to undertake the maximum number of tasks with certain degree of maneuverability having situational awareness of the operating field. The computational engine of the mentioned framework is based on the biogeography based optimization (BBO) algorithm that is capable of providing efficient solutions. To evaluate the performance of the proposed framework, firstly, a realistic model of undersea environment is provided based on realistic map data, and then several scenarios, treated as real experiments, are designed through the simulation study. Additionally, to show the robustness and reliability of the framework, Monte-Carlo simulation is carried out and statistical analysis is performed. The results of simulations indicate the significant potential of the two-level hierarchical mission planning system in mission success and its applicability for real-time implementation

    Multi-rendezvous Spacecraft Trajectory Optimization with Beam P-ACO

    The design of spacecraft trajectories for missions visiting multiple celestial bodies is here framed as a multi-objective bilevel optimization problem. A comparative study is performed to assess the performance of different Beam Search algorithms at tackling the combinatorial problem of finding the ideal sequence of bodies. Special focus is placed on the development of a new hybridization between Beam Search and the Population-based Ant Colony Optimization algorithm. An experimental evaluation shows all algorithms achieving exceptional performance on a hard benchmark problem. It is found that a properly tuned deterministic Beam Search always outperforms the remaining variants. Beam P-ACO, however, demonstrates lower parameter sensitivity, while offering superior worst-case performance. Being an anytime algorithm, it is then found to be the preferable choice for certain practical applications.Comment: Code available at https://github.com/lfsimoes/beam_paco__gtoc

    Time-Constrained Temporal Logic Control of Multi-Affine Systems

    In this paper, we consider the problem of controlling a dynamical system such that its trajectories satisfy a temporal logic property in a given amount of time. We focus on multi-affine systems and specifications given as syntactically co-safe linear temporal logic formulas over rectangular regions in the state space. The proposed algorithm is based on the estimation of time bounds for facet reachability problems and solving a time optimal reachability problem on the product between a weighted transition system and an automaton that enforces the satisfaction of the specification.     Solving multi-objective aeroassisted spacecraft trajectory optimization problems using extended NSGA-II

    This paper focuses on the application of an extended NSGA-II algorithm to the aero-assisted spacecraft trajectory optimization problems. A new multi-objective spacecraft optimal control model is formulated and parameterized using discretization method. The resulting multi-objective nonlinear programming problem is then solved via the multi-objective evolutionary solver. In order to deal with path constraints that naturally arise in practical trajectory planning problems, the original NSGA-II approach is extended by introducing a new constraint handling strategy. Simulation results are provided to illustrate the effectiveness and feasibility of the enhanced NSGA-II algorithm in dealing with spacecraft trajectory optimization problems
