    Evaluation of unidirectional background push content download services for the delivery of television programs

    Este trabajo de tesis presenta los servicios de descarga de contenido en modo push como un mecanismo eficiente para el envío de contenido de televisión pre-producido sobre redes de difusión. Hoy en día, los operadores de red dedican una cantidad considerable de recursos de red a la entrega en vivo de contenido televisivo, tanto sobre redes de difusión como sobre conexiones unidireccionales. Esta oferta de servicios responde únicamente a requisitos comerciales: disponer de los contenidos televisivos en cualquier momento y lugar. Sin embargo, desde un punto de vista estrictamente académico, el envío en vivo es únicamente un requerimiento para el contenido en vivo, no para contenidos que ya han sido producidos con anterioridad a su emisión. Más aún, la difusión es solo eficiente cuando el contenido es suficientemente popular. Los servicios bajo estudio en esta tesis utilizan capacidad residual en redes de difusión para enviar contenido pre-producido para que se almacene en los equipos de usuario. La propuesta se justifica únicamente por su eficiencia. Por un lado, genera valor de recursos de red que no se aprovecharían de otra manera. Por otro lado, realiza la entrega de contenidos pre-producidos y populares de la manera más eficiente: sobre servicios de descarga de contenidos en difusión. Los resultados incluyen modelos para la popularidad y la duración de contenidos, valiosos para cualquier trabajo de investigación basados en la entrega de contenidos televisivos. Además, la tesis evalúa la capacidad residual disponible en redes de difusión, por medio de estudios empíricos. Después, estos resultados son utilizados en simulaciones que evalúan las prestaciones de los servicios propuestos en escenarios diferentes y para aplicaciones diferentes. La evaluación demuestra que este tipo de servicios son un recurso muy útil para la entrega de contenido televisivo.This thesis dissertation presents background push Content Download Services as an efficient mechanism to deliver pre-produced television content through existing broadcast networks. Nowadays, network operators dedicate a considerable amount of network resources to live streaming live, through both broadcast and unicast connections. This service offering responds solely to commercial requirements: Content must be available anytime and anywhere. However, from a strictly academic point of view, live streaming is only a requirement for live content and not for pre-produced content. Moreover, broadcasting is only efficient when the content is sufficiently popular. The services under study in this thesis use residual capacity in broadcast networks to push popular, pre-produced content to storage capacity in customer premises equipment. The proposal responds only to efficiency requirements. On one hand, it creates value from network resources otherwise unused. On the other hand, it delivers popular pre-produced content in the most efficient way: through broadcast download services. The results include models for the popularity and the duration of television content, valuable for any research work dealing with file-based delivery of television content. Later, the thesis evaluates the residual capacity available in broadcast networks through empirical studies. These results are used in simulations to evaluate the performance of background push content download services in different scenarios and for different applications.     Based on the information provided by European projects and national initiatives related to multimedia search as well as domains experts that participated in the CHORUS Think-thanks and workshops, this document reports on the state of the art related to multimedia content search from, a technical, and socio-economic perspective. The technical perspective includes an up to date view on content based indexing and retrieval technologies, multimedia search in the context of mobile devices and peer-to-peer networks, and an overview of current evaluation and benchmark inititiatives to measure the performance of multimedia search engines. From a socio-economic perspective we inventorize the impact and legal consequences of these technical advances and point out future directions of research

    Reanimating cultural heritage through digital technologies

    Digital technologies are becoming extremely important for web-based cultural heritage applications. This thesis presents novel digital technology solutions to 'access and interact' with digital heritage objects and collections. These innovative solutions utilize service orientation (web services), workflows, and social networking and Web 2.0 mashup technologies to innovate the creation, interpretation and use of collections dispersed in a global museumscape, where community participation is achieved through social networking. These solutions are embedded in a novel concept called Digital Library Services for Playing with Shared Heritage (DISPLAYS). DISPLAYS is concerned with creating tools and services to implement a digital library system, which allows the heritage community and museum professionals alike to create, interpret and use digital heritage content in visualization and interaction environments using web technologies based on social networking. In particular, this thesis presents a specific implementation of DISPLAYS called the Reanimating Cultural Heritage system, which is modelled on the five main functionalities or services defined in the DISPLAYS architecture, content creation, archival, exposition, presentation and interaction, for handling digital heritage objects. The main focus of this thesis is the design of the Reanimating Cultural Heritage system's social networking functionality that provides an innovative solution for integrating community access and interaction with the Sierra Leone digital heritage repository composed of collections from the British Museum, Glasgow Museums and Brighton Museum and Art Gallery. The novel use of Web 2.0 mashups in this digital heritage repository also allows the seamless integration of these museum collections to be merged with user or community generated content, while preserving the quality of museum collections data. Finally, this thesis tests and evaluates the usability of the Reanimating Cultural Heritage social networking system, in particular the suitability of the digital technology solution deployed.     This book presents the collection of fifty two papers which were presented on the First International Conference on BUSINESS SUSTAINABILITY ’08 - Management, Technology and Learning for Individuals, Organisations and Society in Turbulent Environments, held in Ofir, Portugal, from 25th to 27th of June, 2008. The main motive of the meeting was the growing awareness of the importance of the sustainability issue. This importance had emerged from the growing uncertainty of the market behaviour that leads to the characterization of the market, i.e. environment, as turbulent. Actually, the characterization of the environment as uncertain and turbulent reflects the fact that the traditional technocratic and/or socio-technical approaches cannot effectively and efficiently lead with the present situation. In other words, the rise of the sustainability issue means the quest for new instruments to deal with uncertainty and/or turbulence. The sustainability issue has a complex nature and solutions are sought in a wide range of domains and instruments to achieve and manage it. The domains range from environmental sustainability (referring to natural environment) through organisational and business sustainability towards social sustainability. Concerning the instruments for sustainability, they range from traditional engineering and management methodologies towards “soft” instruments such as knowledge, learning, creativity. The papers in this book address virtually whole sustainability problems space in a greater or lesser extent. However, although the uncertainty and/or turbulence, or in other words the dynamic properties, come from coupling of management, technology, learning, individuals, organisations and society, meaning that everything is at the same time effect and cause, we wanted to put the emphasis on business with the intention to address primarily the companies and their businesses. From this reason, the main title of the book is “Business Sustainability” but with the approach of coupling Management, Technology and Learning for individuals, organisations and society in Turbulent Environments. Concerning the First International Conference on BUSINESS SUSTAINABILITY, its particularity was that it had served primarily as a learning environment in which the papers published in this book were the ground for further individual and collective growth in understanding and perception of sustainability and capacity for building new instruments for business sustainability. In that respect, the methodology of the conference work was basically dialogical, meaning promoting dialog on the papers, but also including formal paper presentations. In this way, the conference presented a rich space for satisfying different authors’ and participants’ needs. Additionally, promoting the widest and global learning environment and participativeness, the Conference Organisation provided the broadcasting over Internet of the Conference sessions, dialogical and formal presentations, for all authors’ and participants’ institutions, as an innovative Conference feature. In these terms, this book could also be understood as a complementary instrument to the Conference authors’ and participants’, but also to the wider readerships’ interested in the sustainability issues. The book brought together 97 authors from 10 countries, namely from Australia, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Portugal, Russia, Serbia, Sweden and United Kingdom. The authors “ranged” from senior and renowned scientists to young researchers providing a rich and learning environment. At the end, the editors hope and would like that this book will be useful, meeting the expectation of the authors and wider readership and serving for enhancing the individual and collective learning, and to incentive further scientific development and creation of new papers.     Evaluation of the potential of market entrance into the personal luxury goods resale market in Thailand

    The resale of luxury goods is a relatively new phenomenon that globally shakes up the luxury industry. Despite having a second-hand luxury market in place, the Thai market lacks service quality in international comparison, leaving the potential for companies to enter the market and close the quality gap. Past research focused on consumer behavior in relation to luxury consumption (Eastman et al., 1999), service quality (Parasuraman et al., 1988) as well as the relatively new pattern of second-hand consumption (Roux & Guiot, 2010). This study combined these approaches to evaluate the potential of market entrance into the personal luxury goods resale market in Thailand and addressed the questions whether there is potential for a second-hand luxury reselling business in Thailand and which service parameter is most important for Thai customers. In order to answer these questions, the Thai market is analyzed with a review of secondary sources and through quantitative research methods (i.e. online consumer survey), measuring the Thai consumers’ attitude towards luxury and second-hand consumption of personal luxury goods. The survey also included a section on service quality that sought to answer the second research question concerning the importance thereof. The general market environment and the willingness of Thai consumers to engage in second-hand consumption of personal luxury goods suggest that there is potential for a second-hand luxury reselling business in Thailand. Furthermore, the results indicate, that Assurance is the most important service dimension for Thai consumers

    On reputation evaluation in 2.0 communities.

    Current technology has disappointed many members of WEB2.0 communities by its slow and tough adaptability to specific users\u2bc skills and competences. Most of the largest WEB2.0 communities rely on the work of their members to create the resources they are built on, a business model known under the acronym UGC (User Generated Contents), which is today very popular yet still very simple and immature. Presently the vast majority of the communities that relay on UGCs lack an accurate ranking system for their most proficient members and almost none of them provide an effective rewarding mechanism. Sometimes they do provide means to cooperatively evaluate and classify the available resources, but very few of these mechanisms take in account the competence of the voters. Although rough, the current technology seems sufficient to confer to some cooperative web communities a discrete success, which for the most part is due to their core-members passion and commitment. Unfortunately deficiencies like the ones described can involve that, over time, only a small amount of the members keep committed and willing to produce resources of a certain quality. This tendency leads to the situation in which, although the community grows in terms of numbers, in proportion its value decreases. Considering the fast diffusion of web2.0 communities and the new emerging Enterprise2.0 communities phenomena, this problem needs no longer to be underestimated. 2.0 communities should start thinking about new means to raise their quality standards in order to stay effective and successful over time. Providing communities with concrete rewarding systems like remunerative ones could fix the problem, nevertheless this approach rarely and loosely has been implemented so far. The reason is that the task involves several and not trivial side problems, such as the necessity of an advanced ranking mechanisms to evaluate the members. This method should be able to consider complex factors like competence and commitment, but at the same time it should be easily understandable and shared by the members of the community. In order to make sure that the members share and agree with the rating system it must involve their collaboration, which is a non trivial problem, especially in Entrprise2.0 communities. For the aforementioned reasons I propose as a means to overcome the problem a method based on reputation rather than competence and commitment, which is named Reputation Community Evaluation (RCE). This new approach is not based solely on quantitative measurements but relies on an algorithm which exploits the community member reputations to evaluate the resources and the members themselves. In this method the reputation of the single member grows or decreases according to its activity in the community and the evaluations received from the other members over a certain period of time. All members opinions/votes are themselves weighted accordingly to the single member reputation. This approach makes possible to put in place new kinds of business models, which aim to use users reputations as a digital currency inside Web 2.0 or Enterprise 2.0 communities
