Technical and didactic knowledge of the moodle LMS in Higher Education: beyond functional use
Higher education institutions at the international level have seen
the need to adopt and integrate information and communication
technologies to meet the opportunities and challenges of innovation
in teaching and learning processes. This logic has led to the
implementation of virtual learning environments called âLearning
Management Systemsâ, the functionalities of which support
flexible and active learning under a constructivist approach.
This study measured didactic and technological use of Moodle
and its implications in teaching from a quantitative approach
by administering a questionnaire to a sample of 640 higher
education teachers. Some guiding questions were as follows:
Are teachers using the Moodle platform for didactic purposes?
What strategies, resources and tools are teachers using, and
what do they contribute to student-centred teaching? Are teaching
strategies that are focused on collaboration, interaction and
student autonomy promoted? The results coincide with those of
other studies, confirming an instrumental and functional use of the
platform, which is mainly being used as a repository for materials
and information, while its pedagogical use remains limited. This is
becoming a problem in higher education institutions, something
that requires debate and reflection from a systemic perspective on
the adoption and integration of technology in the classroo

This paper discusses the benefits of using strategic management principles as the cornerstone for building the agribusiness capstone experience. The necessity for agribusiness firms to create and implement strategies that build a sustainable competitive advantage in turn necessitates the development of strategic management skills in the leaders/managers of the future. As such, the objectives of a capstone course lean heavily toward the integrative development of strategic decision-making competence. Maximizing the Impact of Professional Development for Earth Science Teachers
This study examines the extent to which follow-up sessions can provide support for earth science teachers as they apply what they learn from professional development coursework during the academic year with their own students. Data include direct observation of follow-up sessions of courses for teachers; interviews with course co-instructors and teacher participants; and, document analysis of teacher products with a focus on the lesson plans, laboratory/activity sheets for students, and virtual ïŹeld trips that teacher participants submitted and shared during follow-up sessions. Strategies are recommended to assist earth science content faculty in increasing the impact of their work with teachers and hence, student instruction

Unravelling the dynamics of learning design within and between disciplines in higher education using learning analytics
Designing effective learning experience in virtual learning environment (VLE) can be supported by learning analytics (LA) through explicit feedback on how learning design (LD) influences studentsâ engagement, satisfaction and performance. Marrying LA with LD not only puts existing pedagogical theories in instructional design to the test with actual learning data, but also provides the context of learning which helps educators translate established LA findings to direct interventions. My dissertation aims at unpacking the complexity of LD and its impact on studentsâ engagement, satisfaction and performance on VLE using LA. The Rhetoric of Health and Medicine as a âTeaching Subjectâ: Lessons from the Medical Humanities and Simulation Pedagogy
The rhetoric of health and medicine has only begun to intervene in health pedagogy. In contrast, the medical humanities has spearheaded curriculum to address dehumanizing trends in medicine. This article argues that rhetorical scholars can align with medical humanitiesâ initiatives and uniquely contribute to health curriculum. Drawing on the authorâs research on clinical simulation, the article discusses rhetorical methodologies, genre theory, and critical lenses as areas for pedagogical collaboration between rhetoricians and health practitioners
Mixing and Matching Learning Design and Learning Analytics
In the last five years, learning analytics has proved its potential in predicting academic performance based on trace data of learning activities. However, the role of pedagogical context in learning analytics has not been fully understood. To date, it has been difficult to quantify learning in a way that can be measured and compared. By coding the design of e-learning courses, this study demonstrates how learning design is being implemented on a large scale at the Open University UK, and how learning analytics could support as well as benefit from learning design. Building on our previous work, our analysis was conducted longitudinally on 23 undergraduate distance learning modules and their 40,083 students. The innovative aspect of this study is the availability of fine-grained learning design data at individual task level, which allows us to consider the connections between learning activities, and the media used to produce the activities. Using a combination of visualizations and social network analysis, our findings revealed a diversity in how learning activities were designed within and between disciplines as well as individual learning activities. By reflecting on the learning design in an explicit manner, educators are empowered to compare and contrast their design using their own institutional data
Systemic intervention for computer-supported collaborative learning
This paper presents a systemic intervention approach as a means to overcome the methodological challenges involved in research into computer-supported collaborative learning applied to the promotion of mathematical problem-solving (CSCL-MPS) skills in schools. These challenges include how to develop an integrated analysis of several aspects of the learning process; and how to reflect on learning purposes, the context of application and participants' identities. The focus of systemic intervention is on processes for thinking through whose views and what issues and values should be considered pertinent in an analysis. Systemic intervention also advocates mixing methods from different traditions to address the purposes of multiple stakeholders. Consequently, a design for CSCL-MPS research is presented that includes several methods. This methodological design is used to analyse and reflect upon both a CSCL-MPS project with Colombian schools, and the identities of the participants in that project
Exploiting popular culture : exploring pedagogical and motivational approaches for design and technology education
This paper describes a case study of pedagogical developments carried out with teachers and secondary school students in response to new curriculum content in Product Design courses presented in Scottish secondary schools. The pedagogy attempts to challenge the anti-commercial manufacturing attitude that prevails among teachers and students and is based on motivational principles. It makes explicit use of the language and tools of popular media culture, specifically 'ask the audience' interaction and investigative forensic science. An electronic voting system is incorporated as an introduction to detailed product evaluation and technical analysis collaborative activities. It examines the educational potential of such ICT systems to help students explore emotional response, product semantics and value judgements and make connections to commercial manufacturing detail design
