    Agent Technology in Supply Chains and Networks: An exploration of high potential future applications

    This paper reports on an ongoing research project that\ud is aimed at evaluating how software agents can improve\ud performance of supply chains and networks. To conduct\ud this evaluation, first a framework is developed to classify\ud potential applications of software agents to supply\ud networks. The framework was used in workshop sessions\ud with logistics and information systems experts from\ud industry, software/consultancy and academia to identify\ud promising areas for agents. Based on the framework and\ud the outcome of the workshop sessions, this paper presents\ud promising application areas for the near future and\ud beyond

    Learning the Lessons of Openness

    The Open Educational Resources (OER) movement has built up a record of experience and achievements since it was formed 10 years ago as an identifiable approach to sharing online learning materials. In its initial phase, much activity was driven by ideals and interest in finding new ways to release content, with less direct research and reflection on the process. It is now important to consider the impact of OER and the types of evidence that are being generated across initiatives, organisations and individuals. Drawing on the work of OLnet (http://olnet.org) in bringing people together through fellowships, research projects and supporting collective intelligence about OER, we discuss the key challenges facing the OER movement. We go on to consider these challenges in the context of another project, Bridge to Success (http://b2s.aacc.edu), identifying the services which can support open education in the future

    Arguments for exception in US security discourse

    In his influential State of Exception, Giorgio Agamben proposes that, even in apparently liberal western democracies, the state will routinely use the contingency of national emergency to suspend civil liberties and justify expansion of military and police powers. We investigated rhetorical strategies deployed in the web pages of US security agencies, created or reformed in the aftermath of the 9/11 events, to determine whether they present argumentation conforming to Agamben’s model. To expose rhetorical content, we examined strategies operating at two levels within our corpus. Argument schemes and underlying warrants were identified through close examination of systematically selected core documents. Semantic fields establishing themes of threat and danger were also explored, using automatic corpus tools to expose patterns of lexical selection established across the whole corpus. The study recovered evidence of rhetoric broadly consistent with the logic predicted by State of Exception theory, but also presented nuanced findings whose interpretation required careful re-appraisal of core ideas within Agamben’s work

Of the important challenges facing firms and organizations three are of prime importance: (1) for organizations to know what they know and maximise the transfer of this knowledge throughout their organisation; (2) finding ways of working which assist in maintaining their competitive advantage and finding new ways of gaining competitive advantage often through innovation, and (3) continuously learning through the exploitation of existing resources and capabilities and the exploration of new resources and capabilities to improve their performance. These challenges are interrelated. This paper investigates some of the extensive literature on innovation and knowledge management and suggests propositions for future research

    This report was produced through a joint research project of the Monitor Institute and the Foundation Center. The research included an extensive literature review on collaboration in philanthropy, detailed analysis of trends from a recent Foundation Center survey of the largest U.S. foundations, interviews with 37 leading philanthropy professionals and technology experts, and a review of over 170 online tools.The report is a story about how new tools are changing the way funders collaborate.     E-SKILLS IP – MASTERING THE 21ST CENTURY SKILLS

    In this paper we will present the results of a case study carried out with attendees of an Erasmus Intensive Programme (e-skills IP - Competences for Collaboration and Knowledge Sharing in Digital Society), which has promoted the development of 21st century skills among participants. The 21st century skills are a set of abilities that students need to develop in order to succeed in the information age. The Intensive Programme took place during 2014 spring in Timisoara, Romania involving the participation of teachers (with skills in the areas of ICT, digital literacy, non-formal education and intervention, design & illustration and teacher education) and students (of teacher training, social education and intercultural relations and migration fields) from four different countries. The classes covered different tools and six tutors were involved. At the end, attendees were: able to master the different tools & applications; capable to use and select the most adequate web 2.0 tools & applications according with a specific situation; able to create and manage their PLE/N; able to share and work collaboratively in a synchronous and asynchronous way; able to communicate an idea and to interact with peers from different countries. The working methodology was hands on workshop based and a package of a two and a half weeks of sessions covering a variety of web 2.0 tools was prepared and delivered to the participants. The e-skills IP had a positive impact in the participants since they saw their 21st century skills enhanced along with foreign language skills improvement. They had the opportunity to learn about different cultures through the nation nights activities and to discover a bit more about cultural aspects of the host region/country through the social events. A website was built in order to aggregate all the contents and results of the IP. The IP gave an intense overview about the different tools that are available in the web 2.0 and that can be very useful for teaching/learning activities.
