    Organizing sustainable development

    The role and meaning of sustainable development have been recognized in the scientific literature for decades. However, there has recently been a dynamic increase in interest in the subject, which results in numerous, in-depth scientific research and publications with an interdisciplinary dimension. This edited volume is a compendium of theoretical knowledge on sustainable development. The context analysed in the publication includes a multi-level and multi-aspect analysis starting from the historical and legal conditions, through elements of the macro level and the micro level, inside the organization.     In his dissertation, Mr. Goilo developed a cutting-edge theoretical framework for an Anthropology of Information. This study compares information in the context of modernity in Amsterdam and coloniality in Curaçao through the making process of monitors and develops five ways to understand how information can act towards sustainable futures. The research also discusses how the two contexts, that is modernity and coloniality, have been in informational symbiosis for centuries which is producing negative informational side effects within the age of the Anthropocene. By exploring the modernity-coloniality symbiosis of information, the author explains how scholars, policymakers, and data-analysts can act through historical and structural roots of contemporary global inequities related to the production and distribution of information. Ultimately, the five theses propose conditions towards the collective production of knowledge towards a more sustainable planet

    This open access book presents an interdisciplinary, multi-authored, edited collection of chapters on Artificial Intelligence (‘AI’) and the Law. AI technology has come to play a central role in the modern data economy. Through a combination of increased computing power, the growing availability of data and the advancement of algorithms, AI has now become an umbrella term for some of the most transformational technological breakthroughs of this age. The importance of AI stems from both the opportunities that it offers and the challenges that it entails. While AI applications hold the promise of economic growth and efficiency gains, they also create significant risks and uncertainty. The potential and perils of AI have thus come to dominate modern discussions of technology and ethics – and although AI was initially allowed to largely develop without guidelines or rules, few would deny that the law is set to play a fundamental role in shaping the future of AI.     Digitalization and real-time control to mitigate environmental impacts along rivers: Focus on artificial barriers, hydropower systems and European priorities

    Hydropower globally represents the main source of renewable energy, and provides several benefits, e.g., water storage and flexibility; on the other hand, it may cause significant impacts on the environment. Hence sustainable hydropower needs to achieve a balance between electricity generation, impacts on ecosystems and benefits on society, supporting the achievement of the Green Deal targets. The implementation of digital, information, communication and control (DICC) technologies is emerging as an effective strategy to support such a trade-off, especially in the European Union (EU), fostering both the green and the digital transitions. In this study, we show how DICC can foster the environmental integration of hydropower into the Earth spheres, with focus on the hydrosphere (e.g., on water quality and quantity, hydropeaking mitigation, environmental flow control), biosphere (e.g., improvement of riparian vegetation, fish habitat and migration), atmosphere (reduction of methane emissions and evaporation from reservoirs), lithosphere (better sediment management, reduction of seepages), and on the anthroposphere (e.g., reduction of pollution associated to combined sewer overflows, chemicals, plastics and microplastics). With reference to the abovementioned Earth spheres, the main DICC applications, case studies, challenges, Technology Readiness Level (TRL), benefits and limitations, and transversal benefits for energy generation and predictive Operation and Maintenance (O&M), are discussed. The priorities for the European Union are highlighted.     The Relationship Between Customers’ Satisfaction and Trust in the Global Supply Chain and Profitability

    The inability to meet customer demands and expectations impacts an organization’s profitability. Understanding and meeting customer needs are critical for the financial success of business owners. Grounded in the theory of constraints, the purpose of this quantitative ex post facto study was to examine the relationships between customers’ satisfaction and trust in the supply chain and profitability. Secondary data (n = 121) were collected from the Elsevier Research Database using archival data collected from an automotive factory. Data were analyzed using multiple linear regression, and the results were statistically significant, F (2, 118) = 264.347, p \u3c .001, R2 = .90. In the final model, both predictor variables were significant, customers’ satisfaction: mean wait time (t = 22.991, p \u3c .001, β = 16.23); and customers’ trust: minimum stock level (t = 7.306, p \u3c .001, β = .118). A key recommendation is for business leaders to satisfy customers and gain their trust by creating sufficient inventory stocking levels and improving replenishment timeframes that meet customers’ supply chain demands. The implications for positive social change include the opportunity for supply chain managers to develop an effective supply chain that may contribute to the quality of service that promotes success in regional markets, sustain growth, and allows for social development among the local community workforces

    Practical Inherently Safer Design Approaches During Early Process Design Stages Aiming for Sustainability

    In traditional industrial process design approaches, techno-economic criteria have been the primary objectives in the early process design stages. Safety is often considered only in the later design stage (e.g., detailed engineering stage). Such a traditional approach is that most of the design degrees of freedom, including technology and configuration issues, have already been determined when considering safety. Modifying a process is costly or unreliable at later stages. To solve this issue, there have been numerous attempts to consider process safety during the early design stages in safety engineers and researchers. In particular, special attention to adopting inherently safer design (ISD) has been made because ISD is deemed the most cost-effective risk reduction strategy at early design stages. However, it is still challenging to adopt ISD for process engineers at the early design stages because of the lack of guidance and insufficient information on upcoming process facilities. To address this challenge, this dissertation consists of three peer-reviewed journal papers [Articles #1 - #3]. With respect to the progress of inherently safer design (in particular, during the early design stage) over the last three decades, Article #1 selects 73 inherent safety assessment tools, which can be utilized during the early design stages, and categorized into three groups: hazard-based inherent safety assessment tools (H-ISATs) for 22 tools, risk-based inherent safety assessment tools (R-ISATs) for 33 tools, and cost-optimal inherent safety assessment tools (CO-ISATs) for 18 tools. The goal of this article is to enable process engineers to use all the available design degrees of freedom to mitigate risk early enough in the design process. Article #2 analyzes 94 chemical process incidents investigated by the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB) reports. To analyze in a systematic approach, this article proposes 17 incident cause factors, 6 scenario factors, and 6 consequence factors to find out whether ISD would have helped to prevent these incidents. Article #3 proposes hands-on predictive models of the flash point, the heat of combustion, lower flammability limit (LFL), and upper flammability limit (UFL). By incorporating the nonlinearity and transformation along with linearity of variables, this article constructed practical, reliable regression models thoroughly with readily available variables—the number of all atoms, molecular weights, and boiling points. The purpose is to enable a process engineer to quickly obtain hazardous properties of intended process materials

However, data skills are scarce, and even more challenging is the inconsistency of the associated training programs with most curated for the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines.
