Views of student engagement among students and faculty in online courses

As part of an effort to learn more about the technologies currently available to students, three executives in the online division of a private, not-for-profit four-year university requested a survey of students and faculty to learn more about the technologies to which they currently have access. Additionally, each of three executives wanted to better understand student and faculty views of student engagement in the division\u27s online courses. To that end, research-based questions about student engagement levels were added to a survey about access to technology. This mixed-method non-experimental study collected data from students and faculty about which definition of student engagement taken from the literature they primarily relate to, as well as their views of current levels of student engagement in online courses offered by the university. Interestingly, student and faculty responses regarding the definition of student engagement to which they related, whether they felt the only courses are engaging based on that definition and the course activities they found most engaging were nearly identical. Given that the responses between the subject groups were so similar, survey bias may be a valid consideration. Recommendations include editing of survey questions, surveying faculty and students in individual courses and more research on the role gender differences may play in student engagement in online learning environments

Adult education and broadcasting in the two Germanies

The Central concern of this study is to shed light on the formation and operation of adult education broadcasting systems and in particular on the relative importance of cultural foundations and more dynamic ideological determinants in those processes, by comparing their working in the capitalist Federal Republic of Germany and the Communist German Democratic Republic. The thesis it sets out to test is that despite fundamental ideological divergences since 1945, common cultural influences in these countries are enduring and significant and may be discerned in their systems of adult education broadcasting as in other aspects of society. The interest and relevance of the thesis extends beyond the particular and peculiar situation of the two Germanies because of the general importance of distinguishing and evaluating these two strands in any study of adult education processes and systems. Because the method employed must necessarily be the comparative one, the study is also a test of this problematic but potentially useful tool for the study of adult education

Zoom Reading As A Multi-Dimensional Media Literacy: A Qualitative Media Study With Youth in Rural Ontario

In this dissertation, I develop and study an original approach to media education I call “Zoom Reading”. This approach offers a critique of, and supplement to, the current Ontario media literacy curriculum by suggesting that media should be given the same rich attention as literature. Drawing on my background in communications and cultural studies, I argue for an approach to media education that includes an attention to form and content, personal experience and social life. After conducting a qualitative study with students in rural Ontario to experiment with Zoom Reading, this project explores the ways that the (rural) location and age of the participating students informs their engagement with popular media. I also consider the unexpected relationships that emerge as Zoom Reading brings to life the pedagogical complexities of working with youth and media

Despite the acceptance of this principle, difficulties arise when one attempts to proceed from the mere declaration to actually planning activities and putting them into effect. This research, the result of collaboration between teachers and researchers of the Educational Science and Engineering Faculties of the University of Florence, focuses on certain theoretical concepts and reference apparatus, bringing international literature to bear on the specific case of Italy.
