Intra Coding Strategy for Video Error Resiliency: Behavioral Analysis

    Get PDF
One challenge in video transmission is to deal with packet loss. Since the compressed video streams are sensitive to data loss, the error resiliency of the encoded video becomes important. When video data is lost and retransmission is not possible, the missed data should be concealed. But loss concealment causes distortion in the lossy frame which also propagates into the next frames even if their data are received correctly. One promising solution to mitigate this error propagation is intra coding. There are three approaches for intra coding: intra coding of a number of blocks selected randomly or regularly, intra coding of some specific blocks selected by an appropriate cost function, or intra coding of a whole frame. But Intra coding reduces the compression ratio; therefore, there exists a trade-off between bitrate and error resiliency achieved by intra coding. In this paper, we study and show the best strategy for getting the best rate-distortion performance. Considering the error propagation, an objective function is formulated, and with some approximations, this objective function is simplified and solved. The solution demonstrates that periodical I-frame coding is preferred over coding only a number of blocks as intra mode in P-frames. Through examination of various test sequences, it is shown that the best intra frame period depends on the coding bitrate as well as the packet loss rate. We then propose a scheme to estimate this period from curve fitting of the experimental results, and show that our proposed scheme outperforms other methods of intra coding especially for higher loss rates and coding bitrates

S-RLNC based MAC Optimization for Multimedia Data Transmission over LTE/LTE-A Network

The high pace emergence in communication systems and associated demands has triggered academia-industries to achieve more efficient solution for Quality of Service (QoS) delivery for which recently introduced Long Term Evolution (LTE) or LTE-Advanced has been found as a promising solution. However, enabling QoS and Quality of Experience (QoE) delivery for multimedia data over LTE has always been a challenging task. QoS demands require reliable data transmission with minimum signalling overheads, computational complexity, minimum latency etc, for which classical Hybrid Automatic Repeat Request (HREQ) based LTE-MAC is not sufficient. To alleviate these issues, in this paper a novel and robust Multiple Generation Mixing (MGM) assisted Systematic Random Linear Network Coding (S-RLNC) model is developed to be used at the top of LTE MAC protocol stack for multimedia data transmission over LTE/LTE-A system. Our proposed model incorporated interleaving and coding approach along with MGM to ensure secure, resource efficient and reliable multiple data delivery over LTE systems. The simulation results reveal that our proposed S-RLNC-MGM based MAC can ensure QoS/QoE delivery over LTE systems for multimedia data communication

Loss-resilient Coding of Texture and Depth for Free-viewpoint Video Conferencing

Free-viewpoint video conferencing allows a participant to observe the remote 3D scene from any freely chosen viewpoint. An intermediate virtual viewpoint image is commonly synthesized using two pairs of transmitted texture and depth maps from two neighboring captured viewpoints via depth-image-based rendering (DIBR). To maintain high quality of synthesized images, it is imperative to contain the adverse effects of network packet losses that may arise during texture and depth video transmission. Towards this end, we develop an integrated approach that exploits the representation redundancy inherent in the multiple streamed videos a voxel in the 3D scene visible to two captured views is sampled and coded twice in the two views. In particular, at the receiver we first develop an error concealment strategy that adaptively blends corresponding pixels in the two captured views during DIBR, so that pixels from the more reliable transmitted view are weighted more heavily. We then couple it with a sender-side optimization of reference picture selection (RPS) during real-time video coding, so that blocks containing samples of voxels that are visible in both views are more error-resiliently coded in one view only, given adaptive blending will erase errors in the other view. Further, synthesized view distortion sensitivities to texture versus depth errors are analyzed, so that relative importance of texture and depth code blocks can be computed for system-wide RPS optimization. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme can outperform the use of a traditional feedback channel by up to 0.82 dB on average at 8% packet loss rate, and by as much as 3 dB for particular frames

The proposed approach develops around the systematic application of advanced machine learning techniques and, in particular, unsupervised deep learning and probabilistic generative models for system-wide learning, modeling, optimization, and data representation. Moreover, in COBANETS, we propose to combine this learning architecture with the emerging network virtualization paradigms, which make it possible to actuate automatic optimization and reconfiguration strategies at the system level, thus fully unleashing the potential of the learning approach. Compared with the past and current research efforts in this area, the technical approach outlined in this paper is deeply interdisciplinary and more comprehensive, calling for the synergic combination of expertise of computer scientists, communications and networking engineers, and cognitive scientists, with the ultimate aim of breaking new ground through a profound rethinking of how the modern understanding of cognition can be used in the management and optimization of telecommunication network

Network Coding-Assisted Retransmission Scheme for Video- Streaming Services over Wireless Access Networks

Video-streaming services, such as Internet protocol television, promising the delivery of multimedia contents over wireless access networks to clients whenever and wherever, are becoming more and more popular. However, scarce radio resources, lossy characteristics of wireless links and high bandwidth demands pose the never-ending challenges for provisioning of real-time streaming services over wireless networks in a timely and reliable manner. Furthermore, a wireless channel may suffer from interference and multipath fading, which may cause random packet losses. In addition, wireless link layer does not provide a retransmission mechanism for multicast/broadcast traffic. This would significantly impact the clients’ quality of experience of streaming services. Traditional unicast retransmission solutions improve client’s quality, at the bandwidth expense, because every lost packet must be retransmitted separately. This chapter presents and practically evaluates a retransmission scheme for video-streaming services over last mile wireless networks. It is based on network coding techniques that increase the overall performance by means of reducing the number of physical transmissions, in comparison to traditional unicast retransmission approach, resulting in reduced bandwidth consumption. Thus, the Internet service providers can increase the number of clients over the same infrastructure or, alternatively, offer more services to the clients
