    Modelling a conversational agent (Botocrates) for promoting critical thinking and argumentation skills

    Students in higher education institutions are often advised to think critically, yet without being guided to do so. The study investigated the use of a conversational agent (Botocrates) for supporting critical thinking and academic argumentation skills. The overarching research questions were: can a conversational agent support critical thinking and academic argumentation skills? If so, how? The study was carried out in two stages: modelling and evaluating Botocrates' prototype. The prototype was a Wizard-of-Oz system where a human plays Botocrates' role by following a set of instructions and knowledge-base to guide generation of responses. Both stages were conducted at the School of Education at the University of Leeds. In the first stage, the study analysed 13 logs of online seminars in order to define the tasks and dialogue strategies needed to be performed by Botocrates. The study identified two main tasks of Botocrates: providing answers to students' enquiries and engaging students in the argumentation process. Botocrates’ dialogue strategies and contents were built to achieve these two tasks. The novel theoretical framework of the ‘challenge to explain’ process and the notion of the ‘constructive expansion of exchange structure’ were produced during this stage and incorporated into Botocrates’ prototype. The aim of the ‘challenge to explain’ process is to engage users in repeated and constant cycles of reflective thinking processes. The ‘constructive expansion of exchange structure’ is the practical application of the ‘challenge to explain’ process. In the second stage, the study used the Wizard-of-Oz (WOZ) experiments and interviews to evaluate Botocrates’ prototype. 7 students participated in the evaluation stage and each participant was immediately interviewed after chatting with Botocrates. The analysis of the data gathered from the WOZ and interviews showed encouraging results in terms of students’ engagement in the process of argumentation. As a result of the role of ‘critic’ played by Botocrates during the interactions, users actively and positively adopted the roles of explainer, clarifier, and evaluator. However, the results also showed negative experiences that occurred to users during the interaction. Improving Botocrates’ performance and training users could decrease users’ unsuccessful and negative experiences. The study identified the critical success and failure factors related to achieving the tasks of Botocrates

    Deep learning for land cover and land use classification

    Recent advances in sensor technologies have witnessed a vast amount of very fine spatial resolution (VFSR) remotely sensed imagery being collected on a daily basis. These VFSR images present fine spatial details that are spectrally and spatially complicated, thus posing huge challenges in automatic land cover (LC) and land use (LU) classification. Deep learning reignited the pursuit of artificial intelligence towards a general purpose machine to be able to perform any human-related tasks in an automated fashion. This is largely driven by the wave of excitement in deep machine learning to model the high-level abstractions through hierarchical feature representations without human-designed features or rules, which demonstrates great potential in identifying and characterising LC and LU patterns from VFSR imagery. In this thesis, a set of novel deep learning methods are developed for LC and LU image classification based on the deep convolutional neural networks (CNN) as an example. Several difficulties, however, are encountered when trying to apply the standard pixel-wise CNN for LC and LU classification using VFSR images, including geometric distortions, boundary uncertainties and huge computational redundancy. These technical challenges for LC classification were solved either using rule-based decision fusion or through uncertainty modelling using rough set theory. For land use, an object-based CNN method was proposed, in which each segmented object (a group of homogeneous pixels) was sampled and predicted by CNN with both within-object and between-object information. LU was, thus, classified with high accuracy and efficiency. Both LC and LU formulate a hierarchical ontology at the same geographical space, and such representations are modelled by their joint distribution, in which LC and LU are classified simultaneously through iteration. These developed deep learning techniques achieved by far the highest classification accuracy for both LC and LU, up to around 90% accuracy, about 5% higher than the existing deep learning methods, and 10% greater than traditional pixel-based and object-based approaches. This research made a significant contribution in LC and LU classification through deep learning based innovations, and has great potential utility in a wide range of geospatial applications

    Research Paper: Process Mining and Synthetic Health Data: Reflections and Lessons Learnt

    Analysing the treatment pathways in real-world health data can provide valuable insight for clinicians and decision-makers. However, the procedures for acquiring real-world data for research can be restrictive, time-consuming and risks disclosing identifiable information. Synthetic data might enable representative analysis without direct access to sensitive data. In the first part of our paper, we propose an approach for grading synthetic data for process analysis based on its fidelity to relationships found in real-world data. In the second part, we apply our grading approach by assessing cancer patient pathways in a synthetic healthcare dataset (The Simulacrum provided by the English National Cancer Registration and Analysis Service) using process mining. Visualisations of the patient pathways within the synthetic data appear plausible, showing relationships between events confirmed in the underlying non-synthetic data. Data quality issues are also present within the synthetic data which reflect real-world problems and artefacts from the synthetic dataset’s creation. Process mining of synthetic data in healthcare is an emerging field with novel challenges. We conclude that researchers should be aware of the risks when extrapolating results produced from research on synthetic data to real-world scenarios and assess findings with analysts who are able to view the underlying data

    Measuring the impact of COVID-19 on hospital care pathways

    Care pathways in hospitals around the world reported significant disruption during the recent COVID-19 pandemic but measuring the actual impact is more problematic. Process mining can be useful for hospital management to measure the conformance of real-life care to what might be considered normal operations. In this study, we aim to demonstrate that process mining can be used to investigate process changes associated with complex disruptive events. We studied perturbations to accident and emergency (A &E) and maternity pathways in a UK public hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic. Co-incidentally the hospital had implemented a Command Centre approach for patient-flow management affording an opportunity to study both the planned improvement and the disruption due to the pandemic. Our study proposes and demonstrates a method for measuring and investigating the impact of such planned and unplanned disruptions affecting hospital care pathways. We found that during the pandemic, both A &E and maternity pathways had measurable reductions in the mean length of stay and a measurable drop in the percentage of pathways conforming to normative models. There were no distinctive patterns of monthly mean values of length of stay nor conformance throughout the phases of the installation of the hospital’s new Command Centre approach. Due to a deficit in the available A &E data, the findings for A &E pathways could not be interpreted
