    Fog Computing: A Taxonomy, Survey and Future Directions

    In recent years, the number of Internet of Things (IoT) devices/sensors has increased to a great extent. To support the computational demand of real-time latency-sensitive applications of largely geo-distributed IoT devices/sensors, a new computing paradigm named "Fog computing" has been introduced. Generally, Fog computing resides closer to the IoT devices/sensors and extends the Cloud-based computing, storage and networking facilities. In this chapter, we comprehensively analyse the challenges in Fogs acting as an intermediate layer between IoT devices/ sensors and Cloud datacentres and review the current developments in this field. We present a taxonomy of Fog computing according to the identified challenges and its key features.We also map the existing works to the taxonomy in order to identify current research gaps in the area of Fog computing. Moreover, based on the observations, we propose future directions for research

    COMPSs-Mobile: parallel programming for mobile-cloud computing

    The advent of Cloud and the popularization of mobile devices have led us to a shift in computing access. Computing users will have an interaction display while the real computation will be performed remotely, in the Cloud. COMPSs-Mobile is a framework that aims to ease the development of energy-efficient and high-performing applications for this environment. The framework provides an infrastructure-unaware programming model that allows developers to code regular Android applications that, transparently, are parallelized, and partially offloaded to remote resources. This paper gives an overview of the programming model and describes the internal components of the toolkit which supports it focusing on the offloading and checkpointing mechanisms.     A Taxonomy for Management and Optimization of Multiple Resources in Edge Computing

    Edge computing is promoted to meet increasing performance needs of data-driven services using computational and storage resources close to the end devices, at the edge of the current network. To achieve higher performance in this new paradigm one has to consider how to combine the efficiency of resource usage at all three layers of architecture: end devices, edge devices, and the cloud. While cloud capacity is elastically extendable, end devices and edge devices are to various degrees resource-constrained. Hence, an efficient resource management is essential to make edge computing a reality. In this work, we first present terminology and architectures to characterize current works within the field of edge computing. Then, we review a wide range of recent articles and categorize relevant aspects in terms of 4 perspectives: resource type, resource management objective, resource location, and resource use. This taxonomy and the ensuing analysis is used to identify some gaps in the existing research. Among several research gaps, we found that research is less prevalent on data, storage, and energy as a resource, and less extensive towards the estimation, discovery and sharing objectives. As for resource types, the most well-studied resources are computation and communication resources. Our analysis shows that resource management at the edge requires a deeper understanding of how methods applied at different levels and geared towards different resource types interact. Specifically, the impact of mobility and collaboration schemes requiring incentives are expected to be different in edge architectures compared to the classic cloud solutions. Finally, we find that fewer works are dedicated to the study of non-functional properties or to quantifying the footprint of resource management techniques, including edge-specific means of migrating data and services.Comment: Accepted in the Special Issue Mobile Edge Computing of the Wireless Communications and Mobile Computing journa

    Joint Computation Offloading and Prioritized Scheduling in Mobile Edge Computing

    With the rapid development of smart phones, enormous amounts of data are generated and usually require intensive and real-time computation. Nevertheless, quality of service (QoS) is hardly to be met due to the tension between resourcelimited (battery, CPU power) devices and computation-intensive applications. Mobileedge computing (MEC) emerging as a promising technique can be used to copy with stringent requirements from mobile applications. By offloading computationally intensive workloads to edge server and applying efficient task scheduling, energy cost of mobiles could be significantly reduced and therefore greatly improve QoS, e.g., latency. This paper proposes a joint computation offloading and prioritized task scheduling scheme in a multi-user mobile-edge computing system. We investigate an energy minimizing task offloading strategy in mobile devices and develop an effective priority-based task scheduling algorithm with edge server. The execution time, energy consumption, execution cost, and bonus score against both the task data sizes and latency requirement is adopted as the performance metric. Performance evaluation results show that, the proposed algorithm significantly reduce task completion time, edge server VM usage cost, and improve QoS in terms of bonus score. Moreover, dynamic prioritized task scheduling is also discussed herein, results show dynamic thresholds setting realizes the optimal task scheduling. We believe that this work is significant to the emerging mobile-edge computing paradigm, and can be applied to other Internet of Things (IoT)-Edge applications

    SAMI: Service-Based Arbitrated Multi-Tier Infrastructure for Mobile Cloud Computing

    Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC) is the state-ofthe- art mobile computing technology aims to alleviate resource poverty of mobile devices. Recently, several approaches and techniques have been proposed to augment mobile devices by leveraging cloud computing. However, long-WAN latency and trust are still two major issues in MCC that hinder its vision. In this paper, we analyze MCC and discuss its issues. We leverage Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) to propose an arbitrated multi-tier infrastructure model named SAMI for MCC. Our architecture consists of three major layers, namely SOA, arbitrator, and infrastructure. The main strength of this architecture is in its multi-tier infrastructure layer which leverages infrastructures from three main sources of Clouds, Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), and MNOs' authorized dealers. On top of the infrastructure layer, an arbitrator layer is designed to classify Services and allocate them the suitable resources based on several metrics such as resource requirement, latency and security.
